Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan
and Chamba districts were some of
the worst affected. Huge losses have
occurred for agricultural and
horticultural lands due to various
hazardous landslides and flooding.
● Experts say that the main causes of
landslides in Himachal Pradesh are
human-made, such as deforestation,
construction in sensitive areas, and
mining. Deforestation can lead to
landslides because trees help to bind
the soil together.

the state government of Himachal
Pradesh estimated the economic
loss from the 2023 disaster to be
over Rs 12,000 crore. The state
has also experienced heavy rain
and floods, which have killed more
than 400 people and destroyed
over 2,500 houses.
A total economic loss of more than
Rs 12,000 Cr is being estimated by
the State government at the
moment. Relief to families severely
affected is urgent and critical.

In August 2023, heavy rainfall in
Himachal Pradesh caused
landslides, flash floods,
cloudbursts, and loss of life and
property. At least 367 deaths
were reported, including 14 in
Shimla landslides. The National
Disaster Response Force
(NDRF) rescued 51 people
stranded in cloud burst incident
sites in the Mandi district, and
several houses collapsed after
a landslide in the Kullu district
