Trial By Fire
● Eating Pain
Trial by Fire
● Newton’s Third Law states that every action has an opposite and equal reaction. Remember this.
Trial by Fire
● Newton’s Third Law states that every action has an opposite and equal reaction. Remember this.
● You’ve taken the action of conjuring up a new future that is positive and good for you - you’ve created your own
version of heaven on earth. But heaven can’t exist without hell. Everything works in a duality. The path to success
is paved with fire, and you’ve got to walk it every day to get what you want. Modern day Clinical Psychologists
prove time and time again that ‘life is suffering’ - and so the key to heaven is unlocked by visiting hell.

● The universe will always resist your efforts to grow. When you try to bend the fabric of reality, it will try to snap
back into shape - it requires strength to hold it there before it solidifies. When you push, the universe pushes back.

● Understand that once you’ve set your eyes on a goal, the only thing standing between you and the goal is a LOT of
suffering. It’s inevitable and there is NO OTHER WAY to get what you want. So let’s teach you how to suffer well.

A big wall of re
“Growing pains”
The wall of re is real, and it exists. You can’t y over it, you can’t dig under
it. You can’t go around it, you can’t pretend it isn’t there. It’s there, and the
only way to get to the other side is to go THROUGH it.
By going through it and coming out the other side, you complete the ‘Trial
by Fire’ the universe has set for you. Once you come out the other side, the
universe will reward you with what you want - but only if you go through
the re.
I want you to come to terms with this right now. I want to you accept the
fact that this journey and transformation will be painful, agonising and will
hurt to complete. But that’s the price of growth and freedom. Pay it.
The sole and only reason for your failure will be if you are not willing to
face the re and walk forward through it every day. You won’t know how
long you have to sit in the re for, nor will you have any indication as to
when it’ll be over. You can be 1m away from the end, decide to not face it
that day and then get reset back to the start.
But in spite of what I’ve said, it’s possible to walk through this and come
out the other side. It sucks, but it’s possible. I know because I’ve done it
time and time again, and so has any other successful person you know
about.

Forms of Resistance
Forms of Resistance
● Fear: Most common - not working because you’re afraid of what happens if you do.
● Instant Gratification: Not working because you want / expect instant gratification.
● Doubt: Not working because you have doubts about yourself, or that it’s even possible.
● Anxiety: Not working because it makes you feel nervous, anxious or uncomfortable.
● Learning: Not working because you want to ‘learn more’ about it first.
● Research: Not working because you want to ‘do some more research’ first.
● Comfort: Not working because you feel comfortable right now and don’t want to feel uncomfortable.
● Perfection: Not working because you want everything to be perfect before starting.
● Waiting: Not working because you would rather wait to see if things change.
Forms of Resistance
● Warped Priority: Not working on the main thing because you think you should be working on something else.
● Support: Not working because you don’t have ‘the support’ or a fucking accountability partner.
● Feeling Vulnerable: Not working because it makes you feel vulnerable or psychologically exposed.
● Addiction: Not working because you’re addicted to something other than working.
● Criticism: Not working because you’ve criticised others that do work, or being critical of others instead.
● Denial: Not working because you’re in denial - refusing to see and accept the truth.
● Drama: Not working because you’re drawn to, create or move to drama in your personal life.
Forms of Resistance
● Self-Love: Not working because it makes you feel stupid and a bit of self-hatred.
● Routine: Not working because ‘you didn’t have your usual latte this morning’, or ‘you didn’t sleep very well’
● Entitlement: Not working because you’re entitled to not & work is beneath you.
● Judging: Not working because you’re too busy judging people that are.
● Burnout: Not working because you think you’re too burned out to work.
● Opinions: Not working because someone told you not to, to take a day off etc.
Resource:
● Don’t make the mistake of thinking you’re not where you want to be because of resistance. As per the previous
modules, it’s still your fault you are where you are. It’s not your fault resistance exists. It’s your fault if you give
into it. Resistance is a force of nature and will always be present, but we must NEVER blame resistance as the
reason we aren’t where we want to be. Resistance can always be overcome, and you’re to blame, always.
● It’s easy to turn and point the finger to resistance and say ‘that’s why I’m not where I want to be’ - e.g.
‘procrastination is the reason’ or ‘my self doubt is the reason’ - but you must remember that these aren’t the things
to blame, it’s the fact you don’t fight back that is the reason.

length necessary to maintain it’s life. It will lie to you, manipulate you, make you doubt
yourself, panic you, scare you, seduce you, make you feel comfortable, etc.

● The current self has all of these psychological weapons. All you have is The Work. But
let me tell you, the work wins every time. EVERY TIME.
Your Goal
The Work
● I define ‘The Work’ as action. It’s having the intelligence to figure out
what you need to do, then doing it. In life there is cause, and there is
effect. We must cause, to effect. The Work is the cause of the effect
you so desire. Your goal is an effect, a snapshot of the future that is
born out of The Work.

● To clarify - I don’t mean any old ‘work’, like building a new website,
making some business cards or inviting people to like your Facebook
page. Those are resistance actions. You know what I’m talking about.
● You will often find that the resistance gets stronger the closer you get
to the finish line. Your journey through the fire may be 101 miles long,
and I can guarantee that at mile 100 you WILL face the most
resistance possible. Your current self will emotionally hail mary the
shit out of you.

The Work
● The Work - doing the thing that you need to do but feel resistance towards doing. The cause you need to create
the effect you want. The action that creates the reaction you desire.
• Likewise, you cannot endure pain without resistance being present. Without the
re we couldn’t even have a trial to put ourselves through!! Without our current
self we wouldn’t have a desired self to become! So be damn grateful for the re.
Learn to love the pain and the resistance and it’s source. Because without it, you
couldn’t become.
Bathing in Pain
(3 - 6 pounds roughly)
What is Pain?
What is Pain?
• I’ll start by explaining that there are multiple forms of pain. Mainly, mental &
physical. It hurts to stub your toe, it hurts to get your heart broken. I want it to be
extremely clear that the next few slides are not intended for you to seek or aim
to engage in self harm or to seek situations that cause unhealthy pain in your life.

• Pain is a defence mechanism. It’s purpose is to signal to the brain that we need to
change something in order to survive. For example, if you break your leg, your
body will send distress signals (and pretty damn strong ones) to your brain to
avoid you from further damaging your body tissue. Conventionally, and
rightfully so, Pain protects us. It might suck, but it keeps us alive.

dubbed ‘Evolving Pain’. I had to dub it myself because no one else is talking
about this and there’s no literature to even describe what I’m discussing.

● Evolving pain
● Pain as a compass
Evolving Pain
● Lock Eyes: look the monster dead on in the eyes. Don’t waver in your sight. Face the pain.
● No Denial: do not live in denial. Do not delude yourself. You can’t get away with anything.
● Bathe in Pain: learn to love the pain. Bathe in it. Eat it up, gorge on it.
● Befriend It: Face it every day until your body becomes familiar with it and welcomes it as a friend.
It is vital you recognise that pain is just a signal your old / current self uses to cling on and survive. It’s a real thing.
It hurts. You can escape it, at the sacrifice of your goal.
This is how the best athletes are trained. They’re trained to sit in isometric holds for hours. It’s absolutely
excruciating. Pure agony. But they sit in the pain because this trains them to be relentless. It trains them to
condition themselves so that when Pain is present when it’s time to perform, they don’t waver or falter. You need to
treat Pain in the same way. You must become pain seeking.
● The Best Part: After a while, you will start to ENJOY the suffering and the pain. You will begin to take comfort
in discomfort, and you’ll be able to derive meaning and pleasure from pain. It’s possible and this shift only
happens when you open your mind to the idea that all the agony, suffering and pain is productive and helpful.
Without pain and suffering you cannot become. It is the ingredient. Pain is growth. It’s a synonym for evolution. If
you want to grow, develop and evolve, the only path you can take is pain.
● So fucking face it. Get up every day and lock eyes with the monster. Look at it, lock eyes and don’t unlock them.
● Seek pain EVERYWHERE. Pain avoidance in other areas of your life will manifest in your business. Pain
conditioning is a universal neurological rule. If your workouts are half assed and lazy, this will seep into your
work. If you decide to lay in instead of facing the day every now and then, this will seep into your work.
● Pain is raw potential. It’s the universe telling you what to do. The more evolving pain you feel, the most you are
evolving. It’s direct feedback from the universe. Imagine if every time you faced the pain you were rewarded with
$100 in cash. You’d face it all the time. But that’s the thing: you ARE. And the rewards exceed $100, trust me on
that.
Familiarity
● You like and love what is familiar to you. Ever wondered why you love someone so much? They’ve just served you
lots of impressions. Your brain is wired this way. At a base level, the only mechanism the brain uses to determine
how much it likes something is how often it’s exposed to it. Love pasta? Pasta has just served you lots of tasty
impressions.
● The same is true for emotions. A lot of depressed, anxious and worried people stay that way because their brain
becomes familiar with these emotions. The person may dislike the feelings and emotions from these states, but
since it’s what their neurochemistry is familiar with, they’ll always default back to this state. Take someone who’s
always stressed. They don’t want to be, but because they’re familiar with it, they always default back.
● You can take advantage of this. If you are always in evolving pain, you will eventually settle into a familiarity with
it. This is the best advantage I have. I absolutely cherish the evolving pain. I love the suffering. I find great
meaning and joy in overcoming it. I had to overcome it to put these very slides together, in the last 2o mins. I can
derive pleasure and happiness from the pain because I’ve done it so often. This is basically Stockholm syndrome
(let me explain what that is). You can brainwash your brain to love pain, it just takes a few years. Just know that
it’s possible and trust me, if you expose yourself to a certain state enough, you’ll always default back to that.
Pain is a compass
Pain is a Compass
● If your work is pain free, you are working on the wrong thing, or you’re just not doing it with enough intensity. If
there is no pain, there is no growth. It’s that simple. If you ever find yourself working on something that feels easy,
pain free and comfortable, you’re gonna be in for some trouble down the road.
● Whatever you feel the strongest levels and resistance and pain on is exactly what you need to be working on. This
is the easiest way to figure out what you need to do and what actually Constitutes ‘the work’.
● The reason pain is a compass is because your current self will muster up the most pain for the activity that has the
biggest potential to kill it. It will wrap the most important activities in a a huge shroud of resistance and then burn
you like hell when you try to do it. Notice this and recognise that the most painful activities are the most
important ones to getting what you want.
● If you are ever stuck on what to work on, just look no further than whatever it is you are resisting most and deep
down know you need to do, but have faced a lot of resistance (e.g. justification, distraction, procrastination) to do.
Love
● Love will win, every time. He who has a why can bear almost any how.
● Love who you are becoming. Fall in love with your evolving self. Tie your heart to it.
● Treat yourself as though you were someone responsible for taking care of. You know your current self, how it
operates. You probably don’t like it. But that’s no excuse to sabotage. Get to work.
● Most importantly: love your current self for giving you the opportunity to grow. This may sound backwards, you
don’t want to ‘love yourself’ in the sense you’re settling and love something you secretly hate, but channel love and
gratitude towards your current identity, for it is the dragon that allows you to be the knight. Without it there
couldn’t be a trial. There would be no pain, which means no growth.
● Work on becoming more aware of your resistance patterns and pain avoidance loops. The single most important
thing I did when starting Imperium - every time I felt the urge to stop sending emails or cold messages, I’d open
my phone and send more. Every time I felt a negative emotion towards appointment booking, I’d go and send
more messages. If I was worried about opening my inbox to find no replies, I’d open my inbox and send more
emails.
● Every single time you notice resistance, fight back with the work.
Action Stacking
● Mind and Body: most people are slaves to their body. That’s not what we want. When you try to control the
body and send it into battle, it will kick and scream. It’s essential you don’t listen.
● Action Stacking: this is where you double, triple, quadruple or 10x down on what you ask the body to do. If you
tell it to do 10 cold calls and it panics and starts freaking out, force it to do 30. If it throws more resistance at you
for 30, force it to do 100.
● Some Examples…
When I started, I was terrified to send cold emails. I set myself a target of 20 a day. My body resisted, so I made it
do 40. It got to 35 and started kicking again, so I made it do another 40. This is how we get compliance from the
body, take control and beat resistance.
If I’m going for a 10km run and my body starts kicking up a fuss, I’ll push it to run 15km. If my mind says a 1
minute plank and the body says no, I’ll extend it to 2 minutes. Eventually the body learns who’s boss, and it will
know that kicking up a fuss or fighting back results in even more of what it doesn’t want to do, thus building
compliance.
Action Stacking
When your body shows it’s fists for a fight, pull a kitchen knife. If it pulls a bigger knife, pull a pistol. If it pulls a
submachine gun, pull a grenade launcher.
Caveat: please remember that you do have biological limits, and they’re not much fun to meet, trust me.
Set and stick to a routine for relaxing and having downtime. There is only so much your body can take before it
breaks and sends you into burnout. It will do this if you aren’t careful. Don’t beat yourself up for having limits, and
allow your body to rest and recover frequently. Reward it for its compliance. The General knows when the Solider is
too tired to fight, and the solider may one day shoot the general when he isn’t looking if pushed too far.
Even video game characters need to rest, sleep, enjoy and recover. Take action stacking to an extreme at your peril.
● The Generals Perspective: this is where you take a third person view / perspective on yourself. This makes
managing pain 10x easier, and when you’re feeling resistance and huge levels of emotion, it helps to pull yourself
out into the third person and visualise your body in your environment.
● Life as a video game: the best way to visualise this is to see your life as some sort of video game when things get
tough. You have the character, then you have the joysticks. You tell the character what to do, and it does so
without complaint. The character will need to rest and relax from time to time, but for the most part that sucker
just does whatever the thumbs on the joysticks say.
● This is a hugely important thing to develop as an entrepreneur. It allows you to step back, analyse your decisions,
emotions and actions and get a more rational view on things. As entrepreneurs we have no boss, no-one to answer
to, and no-one to hold us accountable. So, you need to learn to analyse your own actions and pain avoidance
tendencies, as no one else will.
● This is a skill you develop. It helps to create stressful simulations e.g. running, planking, isometric holds, then try
to see yourself in the third person. Let’s talk about how to practise this.
0. Stand up and walk over to where you want to third person view yourself from, take a mental snapshot of the space & key details
1. Shut your eyes and put your hands over your eyes so it’s real dark
2. Imagine sitting or standing a metre or so away from your body
3. Visualise micro first - e.g. a clip in your hair, the colour of your t shirt, your watch, your hands, etc
4. From that, paint the picture of the macro - being yourself
5. Now visualise the environment in detail - your posture, your desk, the chair you’re in, what’s in the background
6. Now you have the solid image, take a physical action, e.g. shrug your shoulders
You may struggle to achieve mega clarity and it might feel like you’re looking at yourself through a Nokia brick phone camera to
begin with, but this is enough to separate yourself. Work on this skill.
Eventually you will be able to do this with open eyes, in the thick of some serious pain, resistance or negative emotion. Try giving it a
go with the exercise we did earlier, e.g. holding out something heavy or running or planking etc.
