“Thelemagick » LIBER LIBRI « LIBER COXCVIH - Book 297 GOETIA The Book of the Goetia of Solomon the King LIBER CCXCVII THE GOETIA ion of "The Book of In 1904, Aleister Crowley commissioned, edited, and introduced an English trans the Goetia of Solomon the king’, the first of five magical texts known as the "Lemegeton’. Yet few have ‘ctually worked the system, belleving one must conform blindly to the archaic procedures and long ‘winded conjurations ofthe original text. But Crowley attitude toward the Goetia appears to have been diferent His masterful expansion and perfection of the "Preliminary Invocation of the Goetia® {Liber Samek Theuraia Gaeta Summa (Congressus Cum Daemone) sub hurd DCCC} i a prime example. ‘Ars Goetiaor Goetia Is a practice, that Includes the conjuration of demons. The Ancient ‘Greek word yoneia (gostela) means “charm, Jugglery, sorcery, from yong (gd8s) "sorcerer, wizard” (plural: vonrec géetes). The meaning of “sorcerer is attested In a scholion, or commentary, referring to the Dactyi, a mythical race, stating that according to Pherecydes of Syros and Hellanicus of Lesbos, those to the lef are gostes, while those to the night are delverers from sorcery. The word may be ultimately derived from the verb yobu “groan, bevall” (god). Derivative terme are yorreuua "a charm (gosteuma, plural yorreius "to bewitcn, Beguile”(goetetd). Fnreia was a term for the magic in the Greco-Roman world. Its Latinized form is godt; in the 16th century, English adopted it as goece or goety (and the adjectival form goetc), via French godt. During the Renaissance, goetio was sometimes contrasted with magia, as “evil magic” vs. “good magic™ fr "natural magic, or sometimes with theurgy. Henrich Cornelius Agrippa, in his Three Books of Occult Phuosophy, writes °Now the parts of ceremonial magic are goetia and theurgia. Goetia is unfortunate, BY the commerces of unclean spits mace up of the rites of wicked cursities, unawful charms, and eprecations and Is abandoned and execrated by alas." ‘The most obvious source forthe Ars Goetia Is Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum in his De pracstigis daemonum. Weyer dose not cte, and is unaware of, any other books in the Lemegeton, Indieating that the Lemegeton was derived from his work, not the other way around. The order of the spits changed between the two, four addtional spins were added to the later work, and one spirt (Prufis) "was omitted. The ‘omission of Pruflas, @ mistake that also occurs "In an edition (of Pseudomonarchia Daemonum cited in Reginald Scot's The Discoverie of Witchcraft, Indicates that {he Ars Goetia could not have bees complied before 1570. Indeed, Ie appears that the Ars Gaeta Is more ‘dependent upon Sco’ transition of Weyer than on Weyer’s work in Rsell. Adationally, some material ame from Helnrien Cornelis Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy, the Heptameron by Pseudo- Pietro dAbano, and the Magical Calendar. Weyer's Offcium Spirtuum, which is likely related to a 1583 manuscript titled The Office of Spins, ‘appears to have ultimately been’ an elaboration on a. Isth-century manuserist tiled Le Uvre. des Esprits (30 of the 47 spirits are nearly identical to spits in the Ars Goats). In a slightly later copy made by Thomas Rudd (1583%-1656), this portion was labelled “Liber Malorum Spirtuum seu Goetia, and the seals and demons were paired with those of the 72 angels of the Shem HaMephorash whieh were intended to protect the conjurer and to control the demons he summoned. The ‘angelic names and seals derived from a manuscrpt by Blase de Vigenére, whose papers were also used bby Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers (1854-1918) in his works for the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (1887-1903), Rudd may have derived his copy of Liber Malorum Spintuum from a now-lost work by Johannes Tthemius, who taught Agrippa, who In turn taught Weyer ‘This portion of the work was later translated by Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers and published by Aleister Crowley in 1504 under the title The Book of the Goetia of Solomen the King. Crowley added some adcktonal invocations previously Unrelatee to the original work (Including some evocations In the Enochian language), as well as essays describing the etuals as psychological exploration instead. of ‘demon summoning = ea, [Source: Wikipedia - The Lesser Key of Soloman & List of demons inthe Ars Goetia} x THE BOOK OF THE GOETIA OF SOLOMON THE KING ‘TRANSLATED INTO THE ENGLISH TONGUE BY A ‘DEAD HAND AND [ADORNED WITH DIVERS OTHER MATTERS GERMANE DELIGHTFUL TO THE WISE ‘THE WHOLE EDITED, VERIFIED, INTRODUCED AND COMMENTED ev ALEISTER CROWLEY SOCIETY FOR THE PROPAGATION OF RELIGIOUS TRUTH BOLESKINE, FOYERS, INVERNESS, 1908 EMIKAAOYMAI ZE TON EN TA KENEA NNEYMATL, AEINON, AOPATON, MANTOKPATOPA, QEON QEOY, OQEPONOION, KAI EPMONOION, O MIZAN (OIKIAN EYETAQOYEAN, OF E=EBPAQHE Ek GF AITYITTIOY KAI XOPAS. What Is the cause af my llusion of seeing a spirit in the triangle of Ar? Every smatterer, every expert in psychology, wll answer: "That cause lls in your bain.” English children (pace the Education Act) are taught that the Universe lis in infinite Space; Hindu children, in the Akaca, which is the same thing Those Europeans who go alittle deeper learn from Fichte, that the phenomenal Universe is the creation of the E99; indus, oF Europeans studying under Hindu Gurus, are tld, that by Akaca 's mean the Chitakaca. The Chitakace fs stated inthe “Third Eye” re, Inthe brain. 8y assuming higher dimensions of space, we can assimilate tis face to Realism; but we have no need to take SO ‘run trouble. ‘This being true for the ordinary Universe, that all sense-impressions are dependent on changes in the brain|*] we must incude iMsions, which are after all sense-impressions as much as “realtes” are, in the das of ‘phenomena dependent on brain-changes." Magical phenomns, however, come under a special sub-class, since they are willed, and their cause is the series of “real” DDhenomena called the operations af ceremonial Mage ‘These consist of: (2) Sight. = The crce, square, tangle, vessels, lamps, rabes, implements, ete. (2) Sound. = The invocations (3) Smell = The perfumes. (4) Taste. = The Sacraments, (5) Touch. = as under (1) (6) Ming, = The combination of all these and reflection on ther significance. ‘These unusual Impressions (1-5) produce unusual brain-changes; hence their summary (6) Is of unusual Kind. Its projection back Into the apparently phenomenal world Is therefore unusual Herein then consists the reality of the operations and effects of ceremonial magic!51 and I conceive that the apology is ample, so far as the “effets” refer only to those phenomena which appear to the magician himsel, the appearance of the spn, his conversation, possible shacks from imprudence, and so on, even fo ecstasy on the one hand, and death or madness on the other. ‘But can any of the effects described in this our book Goetia be obtained, and if so, can you give a rational explanation of the ‘lrcumstances? Say you 50? ean, and wl. ‘The spints of the Goetia are portions of the human brain. ‘Their seals therefore represent (Mr. Spencer's projected cube) methods of stimulating or regulating those particular spots (through the eye). ‘The names of God are vibrations calculated to establish (2) General control ofthe brain. (Establishment f functions relative tothe subtle word) (©) Control over the brain in detal. (Rank or type ofthe Spi). (©) Control over one special portion. (Name ofthe Spit), ‘Te perfumes aid this through smell. Usually the perfume will only tend to control a large area; but there is an attnbution of perfumes to letters ofthe alphabet enabling one, by a Qabalistic formula, to spell out the Spits name, need not enter into more particular discussion ofthese points; the inteligant reader can easily filin what i lacking 1f, then, 1 say, with Solomon: “the pet Cimieries teaches log." what I mean i: “Those portions of my brain which subserve the logical faculty may be stimulated and developed by folowing out the process called "The Invocation of Cimieres.” {And this Is @ purely materialistic rational statement; it is independent of any objective hierarchy a al. Philosophy has nothing to '58Y; and Science can only suspand judgement, pending 2 proper and methodical investgaton of the facts alleged, Unfortunately, we cannat stop there. Solomon promises us that we can (2) obtain information; (2) destroy our enemies; (3) Understand the voices of nature; (4) obtain treasure; (5) heal diseases, etc. T have taken these five powers. at random; Considerations of space forbid re to explain all. (2) Brings up facts from sub-consciousness. (2) Here we come to an interesting fect. Tks curious to note the contrast between the noble means and the apparently vile ends of ‘agical rituals. The latter are clsguses for sublime tru. "To destroy our enemies” Isto realise the llusion of dual, to exate Compassion. (Ah! Mr Waite,®] the world of Magic is @ mirror, wherein who sees muck is muck.) (G)-A careful naturalist will understand much from the voices ofthe animals he Aas studied long. Even a child knows the difference Between a cat's miauling and purring. The facuty may be greatly developed, (4) Business capacty may be stimulated. (5) Abnormal states ofthe body may be corrected, and the involve tissues brought back to tone, in obedience to currents started from the brain, ‘0 forall the other phenomena. There Is no effect which Is truly and necessary miraculous. ‘Our Ceremonial Magic fines own, then, to a series of minute, though of course empirical, physiological experiments, and whoso vl carry them through intelligently need not fear the result. 1 have all the health, and treasure, and logic I need; I have no time to waste. "There isa lion in the way.” For me these practices fare useless; but for the benef of others less fortunate I give them to the word, togather with this explanation of, and apology for them 1 trust that this explanation will enable many students who have hitherto, by a puerle objectivity in thet view of the question, obtained no results, to succeed; that the apology may impress upon our scornful men of science that the study of the bacilus ‘Souls give place to that of the baculum, the lve to the great — how areat ne only realises wen one identines the wand with the Mahaingam,{7) up which Brahma flew atthe rate of 84,000 yojanas @ second for 84,000 crores of mahakalpas, down which Vishnu flew at the rate of 84,000 crores of yojanas a second for 84,000 crores of mahakalpas — yet nether reached an end. ‘But I reach an end BOLESKINE HOUSE Fovers, NB, July, 1903, NOTE. ~ I had intended inthis place to devote a ite attention tothe edition (save the mark) of the “Goetia” praduced by Mr: AE alte inthe "Book of Black Magia” But a fresh persusal of that work reveals it to be such a farrago of twenty-ffth-rate shoddy schoolboy Journalism that disgust ‘compels me to refrain.
