Lesson 8

Geometric
Probability
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to

• Define geometric probability;

• Calculate the geometric probability occurring within

basic geometric shapes; and

• Apply geometric probability concepts to solve real-

life problems
Let’s Learn It!

Geometric Probability
1 Some probability problems that involve the length, area, and volume of an object.

Example
A supermarket has a sales promotion. A customer Lobster
can throw a dart on the circular target with center 30°
O for every P100 purchase. The item shown on the
region that the dart landed on will be given free to Cake
60°
the customer. What is the probability of getting a Peanut
𝑂
peanut? A chocolate bar? A cake? A lobster?

Probability of Geometric Region

2 When the sample space is a geometric region, the probability of an event 𝐸 is

𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑟 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑎𝑣𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑜𝑛

𝑃 𝐸 =
𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑟 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑜𝑛

Example
15 𝑐𝑚
The figure on the right shows a circular target of
radius 15 cm. The radius of its bull’s eye, which is
shaded, is 5 cm. Martin randomly shoots an arrow 5 𝑐𝑚
at the target. Find the probability that he will hit
the bull’s eye.

Example 1: The figure shows a square flag. E is the point of

intersection of its diagonals. A fly lands randomly on the flag.
Find the probability that it will land on:
𝐷 𝐶
1. the shaded region

2. ∆𝐵𝐶𝐸 𝐸

Example 2: Find the geometric probability of selecting a girl

from a class, if the girls of the class are represented by a
circle of radius 3.5 cm, and the entire class of students is
represented by a larger square of side 8 cm.

Example 3: The figure shows a circular dartboard. The

shaded region on the dartboard is a square. The radius of the
circle and the length of sides of the square are 6 cm and 4
cm, respectively. Now, a dart hits a point at random on the
dartboard without hitting the boundaries, find the probability
that it hits the shaded region. (Express your answer in terms
of 𝜋.)
