‭TAWID‬
I‭ntroduction:‬
‭The Cordillera region in the Philippines is renowned for its heritage, with weaving and‬
‭textiles playing a vital role in traditional rituals. Tawid, or the transmission of weaving skills‬
‭and knowledge, is deeply rooted in the community. This transfer of expertise typically occurs‬
‭within families, as mothers and grandmothers impart the weaving craft to their daughters and‬
‭granddaughters. Through this interactive teaching approach, the younger generation not‬
‭only acquires weaving skills but also develops an understanding of the cultural significance‬
‭behind each pattern and motif.‬
‭Body:‬

I‭ have a connection to tawid in weaving and textiles, as it brings to mind our mosque during‬
‭prayer times. The distinct textile designs they create resemble the prayer rugs we use during‬
‭salah, known as sajdah. Sajdah serves as our prayer mat, adorned with designs that vary‬
‭depending on the city or country we are in. These unique designs hold significance for‬
‭communities representing ties or historical roots linked to Islam's origins across different‬
‭regions worldwide.‬

‭Conclusion‬‭:‬

I‭n my opinion, the tradition of tawid weaving and textiles in the Cordillera region‬
‭demonstrates the resilience and dedication of its residents to preserve their heritage. The‬
‭people of the Cordillera region continue their weaving practices, adapting to modern‬
‭contexts while staying true to their cultural roots. This long-standing practice ensures that the‬
‭diverse tapestry of Cordilleran identity stays vibrant and meaningful for future generations.‬
