GENERAL CHEMISTRY 02

Name: Alvin Carl D. Naldoza Date: 03 / 10 / 2024 Grade & Section: 12 – Cassiopeia

ACTIVITY 01:
Questions:
1. What happened to the salt (NaCl) as it was added to the water?
- The salt (NaCl) dissolves in the water.
2. Why do you think the salt dissolved in water?
- The salt (NaCl) dissolves in the water.
3. Does the bond of sodium chloride (NaCl) break? How does it happen?
- Yes, the bond of sodium chloride (NaCl) breaks when it dissolves in water. This
happens as the polar water molecules surround and pull apart the positively
charged sodium ions (Na+) and negatively charged chloride ions (Cl-).
4. Do you think there are forces present between the particles of water and salt? -
Yes, there are forces present between the particles of water and salt, known as
intermolecular forces. These forces include hydrogen bonding between water
molecules and the attraction between the ions of salt and the partially charged \
ends of water molecules.

ACTIVITY 02:
Data Table:
COMPO STRUCTURAL # OF DROPS ON TIME FOR 1 DROP TO
UN D FORMULA COIN EVAPORATE

Water 18 8 minutes

Ethyl 14 2 minutes
Alcohol

Acetone 10 1 minute

Guide Questions:
1. How many drops of liquid can a 1-peso coin hold for water, ethyl alcohol, and
acetone?
- The 1-peso coin can hold 18 drops of water, 14 drops of ethyl alcohol, and 10
drops of acetone.
2. How long will it take for one drop of a liquid to evaporate for water, ethyl alcohol,
and acetone?
- It takes approximately 8 minutes for one drop of water to evaporate, 2 minutes for
one drop of ethyl alcohol, and 1 minute for one drop of acetone.
3. Which molecules can hold more liquid drops on the coin?
- Water can hold more liquid drops on the coin compared to ethyl alcohol and
acetone.
4. Which molecules took longer to evaporate?
- Water took longer to evaporate compared to ethyl alcohol and acetone. 5.
Are the molecules that can hold the lesser number of drops the same as the
Molecules that took less time to evaporate? Why?
- Yes, the molecules that can hold the lesser number of drops (ethyl alcohol and
acetone) generally evaporate more quickly than those that can hold more drops
(water). This is due to substances with weaker intermolecular forces, like ethyl
alcohol and acetone, evaporating faster than those with stronger intermolecular
forces, like water.
6. How does the polarity of a substance affect the forces of attraction between the
molecules?
- The polarity of a substance affects the forces of attraction between its
molecules. Water, being a polar molecule, exhibits stronger intermolecular forces
(hydrogen bonding) compared to ethyl alcohol and acetone, which are less polar.
This stronger attraction allows water to hold more drops on the coin and evaporate
more slowly.
