Ensuring Dignity:

Safeguarding the Human

Rights of Older Adults
by Zahabiya Lakdawala
Introduction
The dignity of older adults is a fundamental human right that
must be safeguarded. This presentation explores the
importance of respecting the rights of older individuals and
the strategies for ensuring their dignity.

Ageing is a biological concept but is also a social

phenomenon influenced by various factors. The di culty in
establishing objective criteria for defining this concept has
led to the widespread use of chronological definitions of
older persons based solely on age.

Although the United Nations defines individuals aged 60

years or older in its statistical reports as older persons, many
countries have established 65 years as a specific threshold
for old age, which is closely tied to the legal retirement age.
Understanding Human Rights
Human rights are universal, inalienable, and interconnected. It is essential to
recognize the rights of older adults as an integral part of the broader
framework of human rights. Respect for the dignity of older individuals is a
cornerstone of human rights principles.
Challenges Faced by Older Adults

Older adults often face discrimination, ageism, and neglect, which can
undermine their dignity and human rights. It is crucial to address
these challenges and promote a society that values and protects the
rights of older individuals.
Legal Framework and
Protections

International and national legal frameworks

provide protections for the rights of older adults.
These include laws against abuse, exploitation,
and age-based discrimination. It is essential to
enforce these protections to uphold the dignity of
older individuals.

The scope of public international law has evolved

to encompass individuals beyond the confines of
states and intergovernmental organisations. In
this realm, individuals have emerged as subjects
amenable to international law regulations, directly
or indirectly.
Promoting Social Inclusion and
Participation

Social inclusion and active participation are vital for upholding the dignity of older adults.
Creating age-friendly environments, promoting intergenerational connections, and
supporting older individuals' contributions to society are essential for ensuring their rights
and dignity.
Conclusion
Safeguarding the human rights of older adults is a moral imperative and a legal
obligation. Respecting their dignity and upholding their rights require concerted
e orts at the individual, societal, and policy levels. It is essential to prioritize the
rights of older individuals to create a more just and inclusive society.
