Calibration

 CALID (Calibration Identification): This is a unique code that identifies a specific

software version or calibration loaded into an ECU (Electronic Control Unit) or server.
It essentially acts like a fingerprint for the software.
 CVN (Calibration Verification Number): This number, calculated by the ECU
itself, serves as a verification checksum for the CALID. It helps ensure the software's
integrity and hasn't been tampered with.

Diagnostics

 Diagnostic Service Information Exchange: This refers to the communication

between a diagnostic tool (client) and an ECU (server) to retrieve diagnostic
information or even modify its behavior for testing purposes. This is essentially how
scan tools interact with vehicles.
 Emissions-Related DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code): This is a specific type of DTC
triggered when a malfunction causes emissions to exceed legal limits or otherwise
required by regulations. These DTCs typically illuminate the malfunction indicator
light (MIL) on the dashboard.

Other Terms

 I/M Station: This refers to an Inspection and Maintenance station authorized to test a
vehicle's emission control systems and ensure roadworthiness.
 Malfunction Indicator (MI): This is the dashboard light that illuminates to warn the
driver of a potential malfunction in the vehicle.
 On-Board Diagnostics (OBD): This is the overall system within a vehicle that
continuously monitors various sensors and control signals. Deviations from expected
values can indicate a fault within the system or a related component.

Regulations and Standards:

The provided note highlights the importance of standardized formats for CALID and CVN in
emission-related software.

 SAE J1979-DA: This standard specifies the format for reporting CALID for emission-
related software.
 ISO 15031-2: This standard defines the format for CVN used with emission-related
software.
