5. Dutiyamārapāsasuttaṃ
141. Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā bārāṇasiyaṃ viharati
isipatane migadāye. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi –
‘‘bhikkhavo’’ti. ‘‘Bhadante’’ti te bhikkhū bhagavato
paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca –
‘‘Muttāhaṃ, bhikkhave, sabbapāsehi ye dibbā ye ca
mānusā. Tumhepi, bhikkhave, muttā sabbapāsehi ye dibbā
ye ca mānusā. Caratha, bhikkhave, cārikaṃ bahujanahitāya
bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāya atthāya hitāya sukhāya
devamanussānaṃ. Mā ekena dve agamittha. Desetha,
bhikkhave, dhammaṃ ādikalyāṇaṃ majjhekalyāṇaṃ
pariyosānakalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ
kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ brahmacariyaṃ pakāsetha.
Santi sattā apparajakkhajātikā, assavanatā dhammassa
parihāyanti. Bhavissanti dhammassa aññātāro. Ahampi,
bhikkhave, yena uruvelā senānigamo tenupasaṅkamissāmi
dhammadesanāyā’’ti. Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā
tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ gāthāya
ajjhabhāsi –
‘‘Baddhosi sabbapāsehi, ye dibbā ye ca mānusā;
Mahābandhanabaddhosi, na me samaṇa mokkhasī’’ti.
‘‘Muttāhaṃ sabbapāsehi, ye dibbā ye ca mānusā;
Mahābandhanamuttomhi, nihato tvamasi antakā’’ti.
Atha kho māro pāpimā…pe… tatthevantaradhāyīti.

“Caratha, bhikkhave, cārikaṃ bahujanahitāya

bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāya atthāya hitāya
sukhāya devamanussānaṃ.
Wander forth, O bhikkhus, for the welfare of the
multitude, for the happiness of the multitude, out of
compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and
happiness of devas and humans.

Mā ekena dve agamittha. Desetha, bhikkhave,

dhammaṃ ādikalyāṇaṃ majjhekalyāṇaṃ
pariyosānakalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ
kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ brahmacariyaṃ
pakāsetha.
Let not two go the same way. Teach, O bhikkhus, the
Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the
middle, good in the end, with the right meaning and
phrasing. Reveal the perfectly complete and purified
holy life.

Santi sattā apparajakkhajātikā, assavanatā dhammassa

parihāyanti. Bhavissanti dhammassa aññātāro.
Ahampi, bhikkhave, yena uruvelā senānigamo
tenupasaṅkamissāmi dhammadesanāyā’’ti.
There are beings with little dust in their eyes who are
falling away because they do not hear the Dhamma.
There will be those who will understand the Dhamma. I
too, bhikkhus, will go to Senānigama in Uruvelā in order
to teach the Dhamma.”

samannāgatānaṃ devamanussānaṃ catucakkaṃ vattati, yehi
samannāgatā devamanussā nacirasseva mahantattaṃ

vepullattaṃ pāpuṇanti bhogesu. Katamāni cattāri?

Patirūpadesavāso, sappurisāvassayo attasammāpaṇidhi,
pubbe ca katapuññatā – imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri
cakkāni, yehi samannāgatānaṃ devamanussānaṃ
catucakkaṃ vattati, yehi samannāgatā devamanussā
nacirasseva mahantattaṃ vepullattaṃ pāpuṇanti bhogesū’’ti.
‘‘Patirūpe vase dese, ariyamittakaro siyā;
Sammāpaṇidhisampanno, pubbe puññakato naro;
Dhaññaṃ dhanaṃ yaso kitti, sukhañcetaṃdhivattatī’’ti.

The Wheel

"Bhikkhus, there are these four w heels. When these

four w heels turn, those devas and h u m an s who
possess them soon attain greatness and abundance of
wealth : W h at four? Dwelling in a suitable locality,
relying on good persons, right resolution, and
m erits done in the pa st. These are the four wheels.
When these four wheels turn, those d e v a s and
hu mans who possess them soon attain greatness and
abundance of wealth."

When a person dwells in a suitable locality and

makes friends with the noble ones, when he has
formed rig h t resolutions, and done deed s of merit
in the past, grain, riches, fame, and repu tation,
along with happiness a ccrue to him.

Four W heels of Prosperity

1) Dwelling in a suitable locality,
