SECTION A (READING) 5 MARKS

I. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
The world's potential supply of fresh water has been affected by pollution and irregular rainfall patterns.
Water use has increased twice as fast as the population. In the future global warming is expected to have
a significant impact on water supplies with increased floods in some areas and droughts in others.
Most people in underdeveloped countries get their water from streams, rivers or storage ponds. This
water is likely to be polluted. The only clean water available comes from underground, called
groundwater, and is accessed through wells and hand pumps. One pump or well is often shared by the
whole village.
Imagine life in your home with no taps for fresh water and no toilets. This is how more than two billion
people in the world have to live. About three billion people in the world are not able to wash their hands
in clean water after going to the toilet – in fact they have got no toilets!
Such conditions bring severe health hazards. Raw sewage constantly pollutes their water supply and
spreads diseases. Water pollution is responsible for 25 million deaths a year and half of all the world’s
diseases are spread through water.
