Hardware-Based Encryption:
The system's encryption capabilities have been rigorously tested in real-world scenarios.
It supports data encryption through self-encrypting disks (SEDs) and storage system-
based array encryption. SEDs work with the storage system to implement static data
encryption by configuring full self-encrypting disks (FULL-SED) and utilising either
internal or external key managers. This ensures that all data on disks is encrypted
transparently without a ecting other features such as mirroring, snapshots,
deduplication, and compression. The POC was done in THE BANK's production
environment together with THE BANK's external key manager, FutureX, demonstrating its
capability and reliability in a real-world scenario .
The Dorado 8000 o ers unmatched flexibility and scalability in key management through
its support for both integrated and external key managers. It features a FIPS 140-2 Level
2 certified internal key manager. It provides a secure, self-contained solution for key
generation, rotation, escrow, and storage for streamlined deployments or environments
with more modest key management requirements. However, for large-scale enterprises
or highly regulated industries with stringent separation-of-duties policies, the system is
fully interoperable with external third-party KMIP-compliant key management servers
such as Gemalto, Thales, and HashiCorp. This enables organisations to centralise and
consolidate key management across their entire storage infrastructure, define granular
access policies, and integrate key lifecycle workflows with their established security
tools and processes (Huawei Support) (Huawei Support).
The Dorado 8000 supports high availability clustering for external key managers, allowing
customers to deploy redundant, geographically distributed key server instances for
maximum resilience and business continuity. In the event of a key manager failure or site-
level outage, the Dorado 8000 can automatically failover to a secondary key server,
ensuring uninterrupted access to encrypted data and preventing potential data loss or
service disruption (Huawei Support) (Huawei Enterprise).
Extending beyond its cutting-edge encryption capabilities, the Dorado 8000 incorporates
a comprehensive suite of access control, authentication, and auditing features to
enforce robust security policies and maintain regulatory compliance across the storage
environment. The system supports granular attribute-based access control policies that
can be defined at multiple levels, including individual LUNs, file systems, and storage
pools. Access privileges can be dynamically assigned and revoked based on a wide range
of conditions, such as user or group membership, IP address or subnet, time of day, and
device posture or health status. This fine-grained control enables organisations to
implement precise least-privilege access models and align storage security policies with
their broader enterprise risk management and compliance frameworks (Huawei
Enterprise) (Huawei Support).
Comprehensive Auditing:
To maintain a comprehensive audit trail and enable forensic analysis of potential security
incidents, the Dorado 8000 includes a tamper-proof audit logging subsystem that
captures a rich set of system and user activity events. All administrative actions, data
access operations, authentication events, and policy changes are securely logged. These
logs can be filtered, searched, and exported for analysis or integration with enterprise
SIEM and log management solutions. Audit logs are digitally signed and encrypted to

prevent tampering or unauthorised modification, ensuring robust audit trails for forensic
analysis and compliance reporting (Huawei Support) (Huawei Support).
The Huawei OceanStor Dorado 8000 delivers exceptional high availability (HA) and
disaster recovery (DR) capabilities through its advanced 3DC (Three Data Center)
architecture. This robust solution integrates synchronous and asynchronous replication
technologies, providing enterprises with a comprehensive, resilient, and high-
performance data protection strategy.
The core of the Dorado 8000’s HA architecture is its exceptional HyperMetro active-active
synchronous replication technology. HyperMetro ensures zero Recovery Point Objective
(RPO) and near-zero Recovery Time Objective (RTO) between two active-active data
centres. This configuration synchronously replicates data between two sites, providing
real-time mirroring and continuous data availability. Unlike traditional active/passive HA
solutions, which rely on idle standby systems, HyperMetro ensures that the Dorado
8000's high-performance resources are fully utilised across both sites, providing
automatic workload balancing and transparent failover in the event of a single-site failure
or outage.
Key Features:
Zero RPO and Near-Zero RTO: HyperMetro o ers instantaneous data synchronisation
and immediate failover capabilities, ensuring continuous data availability and minimal
data loss.
SmartMatrix Interconnect
failover response times. This robust interconnect fabric underpins the system's ability to
deliver consistent performance and availability across both sites.
Key Features:
Redundant Connectivity: Ensures continuous data access and eliminates single points
of failure.
To further enhance data resiliency and protection across geographic regions, the Dorado
8000 complements its HyperMetro synchronous replication with its intelligent
HyperReplication solution for asynchronous multi-site disaster recovery. This third site is
integrated using asynchronous replication, allowing for longer distances and ensuring
data consistency with minimal impact on performance. This third site acts as a disaster
recovery site, providing additional protection. Using HyperReplication, organisations can
create advanced multi-target 3DC replication topologies that combine synchronous and
asynchronous data movement across multiple locations. This architecture tailors their
HA/DR architecture to their precise recovery objectives, cost requirements, and risk
tolerance.
Key Features:
The Huawei OceanStor Dorado 8000 supports cascading 3DC configurations, where data
is synchronously replicated between the primary and secondary sites (HyperMetro) and
then asynchronously replicated to a tertiary site. This architecture ensures that even if
the primary site fails, the secondary site can maintain business operations while the
tertiary site o ers backup and recovery capabilities. The cascading 3DC setup provides
flexibility in terms of deployment and scalability, allowing organisations to expand their
storage architecture as their needs grow.
Key Features:
The OceanStor Dorado 8000 o ers automated failover and failback mechanisms to
ensure seamless transitions between sites during a disaster. This automation minimises
downtime and reduces the need for manual intervention. The system guarantees data
consistency across all three sites, leveraging Huawei's advanced replication
technologies to maintain synchronised copies of data even over long distances.
Key Features:
Data Consistency: Ensures synchronised copies of data across all sites, maintaining
data integrity.
The Dorado 8000 is built on a high-performance NVMe architecture, ensuring low latency
and high IOPS, which are crucial for maintaining application performance during data
replication and disaster recovery operations. This optimization ensures that the
performance remains consistent even during failover and failback processes.
Key Features:
High Performance: NVMe architecture delivers low latency and high IOPS, which is
crucial for replication operations.
Huawei's management tools provide a unified interface for configuring and monitoring
3DC setups. Administrators can easily manage replication policies, monitor
performance, and initiate failover or failback operations through an intuitive dashboard.

disasters. This robust HA and DR solution minimises downtime and maintains business
operations without interruption.
Scalability and Flexibility: The OceanStor Dorado 8000's support for cascading 3DC
configurations allows enterprises to scale their storage infrastructure seamlessly. As
business needs grow, organisations can expand their replication architecture to include
additional sites and capacities.
Integration with Business Continuity Solutions: The Dorado 8000's integration with
business continuity solutions like VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) and Huawei's
proprietary BCManager provides a holistic approach to disaster recovery. These tools
enable comprehensive planning, automation, and execution of DR workflows, ensuring
that all critical data and applications can be recovered quickly and e iciently in the event
of a disaster.
Proactive and Predictive Maintenance: The Dorado 8000 uses AI-driven predictive
analytics to monitor system health proactively and predict potential failures before they
occur. This reduces unplanned downtime and ensures that the storage system remains
in optimal condition, further enhancing its reliability and availability.
Support for Diverse Workloads: The Dorado 8000 is designed to support a wide range of
workloads, from high-performance transactional databases to large-scale virtualisation
and big data analytics. Its flexible architecture allows it to adapt to varying performance
and capacity requirements, making it a versatile solution for enterprise environments.
At the heart of the Dorado 8000's e iciency capabilities is its innovative SmartDedupe
and SmartCompression engine, built on a foundation of patented algorithms and
hardware acceleration technologies. This high-performance data reduction architecture
transcends the limitations of traditional software-based dedupe and compression
implementations, which often struggle with inconsistent reduction ratios, performance
impacts, and complex tuning requirements across diverse workloads and data types.
The key to SmartDedupe's superior e iciency and consistency is its intelligent, analytics-
driven variable-length deduplication approach. Instead of relying on fixed-block
boundaries that can miss redundancies or require complex data pattern analysis,
SmartDedupe uses real-time machine learning to dynamically analyse incoming data
streams and adapt its deduplication window size on a chunk-by-chunk basis.
But SmartDedupe's innovations don't stop at dynamic deduplication window sizing. The
engine also incorporates advanced similarity-based detection and delta compression,
enabling it to identify and reduce similar but not identical data blocks that traditional
approaches would miss. For example, SmartDedupe can automatically detect
incremental di erences in database logs or versioned software builds, storing only
forward delta di erences rather than entirely new data copies. This similarity-based
reduction provides significant capacity savings for workloads dealing with large
monolithic files or constantly mutating data streams.
After deduplicating and delta encoding each data stream, SmartDedupe passes the
remaining unique data to the SmartCompression stage, which applies real-time,
Page 10 of 69
Once the ideal compression profile is selected, the engine can seamlessly adapt
between lossless and lossy encoding on a per-block basis, automatically favouring
throughput over ratio when required to accelerate high-priority workloads. This flexible,
analytics-driven multi-codec approach ensures consistently high reduction ratios across
diverse data sets, with up to 80% compression achieved for conventional datasets.
What truly sets the Dorado 8000's data reduction architecture apart is its seamless
integration of intelligent hardware acceleration technologies that o load and optimise
the entire reduction pipeline. Huawei's custom data reduction co-processor is at the core
of this acceleration architecture. This unique system-on-chip design incorporates
dedicated processing engines for compute-intensive tasks like pattern matching, delta
encoding, compression, and erasure coding. By implementing key reduction stages in
highly optimised silicon rather than relying solely on general-purpose CPUs, the Dorado
8000 eliminates much of the performance overhead and potential bottlenecks typically
associated with software-based approaches.
The data reduction co-processor works in concert with other accelerated components,
such as the Dorado 8000's intelligent storage nodes (equipped with ARM cores and
programmable SmartNICs), its high-speed interconnect fabrics, and its globally
distributed, scale-out metadata infrastructure. Together, these technologies create a
seamless, end-to-end data reduction path that can handle even the most demanding
throughput and IOPs requirements without degradation.
For example, as new data is ingested, the storage nodes perform initial deduplication and
compression filtering in their local ARM cores before replicating across the backend
fabric. This distributed preprocessing reduces overall tra ic and o loads heavyweight
reduction operations from the system's main controllers. Once consolidated, the
intelligent data reduction co-processors take over – rapidly deduplicating, delta
encoding, and compressing the pre-processed streams into their final, ultra-compact
representations for persistent storage on the system's media tiers.
From an operational perspective, the Dorado 8000's reduction technologies are fully
integrated into the system's unified management stack, with a one-click application of
deduplication and compression policies across storage pools and quality of service
controls. Real-time monitoring and reporting provide comprehensive visibility into
reduction ratios, capacity savings, and performance impacts, enabling precise tuning to
align with user-defined policies. Transparent integration with other data services like
snapshots, replication, and cloud mobility ensures consistent reduction anywhere data
lands.
When evaluating the Dorado 8000's e iciency capabilities against competing solutions,
organisations must look beyond performance specifications or even raw reduction ratios
alone. Many arrays tout high reduction percentages but lack the intelligent workload
analysis, adaptive multi-codec compression, similarity-based encoding, and end-to-end
hardware acceleration required to achieve those results consistently, at scale, across
diverse enterprise workloads.
At the core of the Dorado 8000's data protection capabilities is its high-performance,
space-e icient snapshot engine based on redirect-on-write (ROW) technology. Unlike
traditional copy-on-write snapshots, which create redundant data copies, Dorado's ROW
approach intelligently stores only the changed blocks for each point-in-time image while
sharing all unmodified data across snapshots. This innovative design allows for virtually
unlimited snapshot creation and retention – with up to 2048 snapshots per source
volume – without wasted storage overhead or performance impacts.
But snapshots' operational value extends far beyond recovery speed and data loss
mitigation. The Dorado 8000 tightly integrates its snapshot capabilities with an array of
advanced data management services, unlocking robust use cases that optimise
production workflows, enable cross-site business continuity and enhance cyber
resilience in the face of emerging threats.
For instance, the system allows application-consistent snapshot creation and restore
processes to be seamlessly integrated with DevOps CI/CD pipelines, database
replication tools like Oracle Data Guard, backup apps including Veritas NetBackup, and
more. This snapshots-as-a-service model eliminates disruptive host-based backup
windows and provides self-service data management for application owners,
developers, and database administrators.
The Dorado 8000 also uniquely enables the retention and operational use of read/write
snapshots alongside read-only images. This allows individual snapshots to function as
rapid data copies or clones that can be provisioned, mounted, and used for test/dev,
analytics, app upgrades, or even hosting temporary workloads while maintaining
independent rollback capabilities to restore production datasets quickly.
To underpin robust multi-site and disaster recovery scenarios, the Dorado 8000's
snapshot capabilities are also deeply integrated into its HyperMetro and
HyperReplication engines for space-e icient asynchronous replication. Application-
consistent snapshot images can be automatically replicated between locations for
remote data protection, disaster recovery, and active/active continuity across metro
clusters.
However, perhaps the most potent aspect of the Dorado 8000's snapshot and replication
integration is its industry-leading capability to combat sophisticated cyber threats—
including ransomware attacks designed to maliciously encrypt or destroy data and
backups. The system's secure HyperSnap technology allows administrators to designate
snapshots as immutable, read-only data copies that are physically isolated, encrypted,
locked down with WORM policies, and 100% immune to modification or deletion.
This secure, air-gapped protection goes beyond traditional backups by creating true
active life preservers for production data that cannot be impacted by malware,
administrative mistakes, or even compromised user credentials with root access. It
complements Dorado's robust malware prevention capabilities, including HyperDetect –
an AI/ML engine that uses behavioural analytics to automatically identify and respond to
potential ransomware activity with customisable protective actions.
From a management perspective, the Dorado 8000's entire suite of snapshot, replication,
and cyber resilience tools are tightly integrated into its unified management platform and
exposed through powerful APIs for automation and self-service provisioning. Policy-
driven workflows enable snapshot schedules, consistency groups, retention periods,
and replication vectors to be centrally defined and enforced across the entire storage
environment.
A single pane of glass provides complete visibility into local and remote snapshot
catalogues, replication streams, and active threats. Custom scripts, orchestration
hooks, and connections to external security data lakes extend the Dorado 8000's
protection capabilities into fully converged cyber defence architectures.
their implementations lack the Dorado 8000's level of operational integration, cyber
resiliency, extreme recovery granularity, and intelligent automation.
The insights and actions surfaced through eService originate from Huawei's OceanStor
Intelligent Cloud, a globally distributed mesh of data ingestors, analytics engines, and
machine learning models continuously analysing millions of storage data points across
thousands of deployed arrays worldwide. This distributed, crowd-sourced intelligence
provides eService with an unparalleled knowledge base from which to draw when
monitoring and optimising customer environments.
For example, as each Dorado 8000 initialises, eService establishes secure, bi-directional
communication tunnels for real-time telemetry streaming. Over 6,000 system health,
performance, and workload context data points per array are continuously ingested into
OceanStor Intelligent Cloud, where they are combined with crowd-sourced insights to
create dynamic, self-updating performance baselines tailored to each customer's
specific configuration and application context.
Unlike conventional storage reporting tools that rely on simplistic linear projections
prone to underestimating growth, eService's capacity brain leverages deep neural
networks trained on millions of real-world scenarios to account for the cyclical, non-
linear behaviours inherent to dynamic enterprise storage environments. Its tight
integration with workload context insights enables intelligent waste reclamation
suggestions tailored to each environment – for example, identifying cold Oracle
tablespaces, stale VMware snapshots, or orphaned LUNs that can be o loaded,
compressed, or reclaimed.
eService goes beyond just monitoring and reporting to elevate the Dorado 8000 to a truly
self-optimizing, autonomous storage control plane. Through its integration with
ServiceGovern, Huawei's industry-leading AI RunZero orchestration engine, eService
provides a rich set of automated issue prevention and remediation runbooks for
automatically resolving or mitigating detected anomalies and resource constraints.
eService and ServiceGovern are fully integrated with Huawei's CloudIQ AIOps solution,
which provides advanced monitoring, event correlation, and L3 automation capabilities
across the full technology stack. Through its open APIs, data pipeline integrations, and
support for industry standards like PetrelData, eService enables seamless incorporation
of Dorado 8000 insights into broader IT operations management and AIOps workflows.
External analytics, monitoring, and automation solutions can easily ingest Dorado
performance, capacity, and workload data streams for advanced visualisation,
correlation with application metrics, automated incident response, and closed feedback
loops for continuous optimisation. CloudIQ's AI incident management and full-stack
runbook automation extend Huawei's autonomous storage operations capabilities to the
broader private cloud infrastructure.
When evaluating the Dorado 8000's monitoring, analytics, and automation capabilities
versus competing platforms, organisations must consider more than just surface-level
storage reporting features. Many enterprise arrays lack the depth of real-time telemetry,
machine learning, and predictive modelling required to provide true business and
workload context for performance and capacity insights. Others provide reporting
capabilities but as isolated data silos with limited integration into external operations
management platforms, inhibiting opportunities for cross-stack correlation, simulation,
and closed-loop optimisation.
Very few storage monitoring solutions o er the seamless integration with intelligent
runbook automation and AIOps workflows that eService delivers through its native
interoperability with ServiceGovern and CloudIQ. Only Huawei leverages its distributed
OceanStor Intelligent Cloud and global fleet footprint to provide customers with a
constantly evolving, crowd-sourced knowledge base for autonomous anomaly detection
and proactive issue prevention.
For organisations like The Bank, pursuing autonomous cloud operating models and IT-as-
a-service delivery, the OceanStor Dorado 8000's eService platform represents a bold new
vision for self-optimizing, self-managing storage infrastructure. Its combination of
advanced AI analytics, tight integration with monitoring and automation ecosystems, and
seamless interoperability across OceanStor's global cloud brain provides the
autonomous insights and actions required to maintain peak operational fitness.
THE HUAWEI OCEANSTOR DORADO 8000 PROVIDES UNPARALLELED INTEGRATION WITH VMWARE
ENVIRONMENTS , DELIVERING EXTENSIVE SUPPORT FOR V IRTUAL V OLUMES (VV OLS) AND EFFORTLESS
COMPATIBILITY WITH STANDALONE ACTIVE-ACTIVE (A/A) AND VMWARE METRO S TORAGE CLUSTER
(VMSC) ARCHITECTURES. THIS ROBUST INTEGRATION GUARANTEES THAT ORGANISATIONS CAN FULLY
LEVERAGE THEIR VMWARE INFRASTRUCTURE, CAPITALISING ON THE EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE,
AVAILABILITY, AND DATA SERVICES OFFERED BY THE D ORADO 8000 STORAGE PLATFORM.
At the core of the Dorado 8000's VMware capabilities is its native end-to-end support for
VMware VVols—a groundbreaking technology that revolutionises storage management
and optimisation for virtualised environments. Unlike traditional storage provisioning
models that rely on coarse-grained LUNs or volumes, VVols enable storage to be
provisioned, managed, and optimised at the individual virtual machine (VM) level,
significantly simplifying operations and improving overall e iciency.
The Dorado 8000's VVol implementation is fully integrated into the VMware ecosystem,
allowing VMware administrators to leverage familiar tools and interfaces to create and
manage VM-centric storage containers directly from the vSphere Web Client or CLI.
These VM-level storage containers, called Virtual Volume Objects (VVols), can be easily
customised with specific performance, capacity, and data protection policies based on
the unique requirements of each individual VM or application.
Key Features:
VVol Versions Supported: The Dorado 8000 supports VVol versions 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0
through the VASA Provider. This ensures broad compatibility and allows for advanced
integration with VMware's storage management capabilities.
Future Support: Planned support for VVol 4.0 (VASA 5.0) later this year will further
enhance the system's compatibility and future-proofing. This commitment to supporting
future VVol versions ensures that FNB's storage infrastructure remains state-of-the-art
and capable of leveraging the latest VMware features.
One of the key advantages of the Dorado 8000's VVol support is its ability to provide
granular Quality of Service (QoS) controls at the individual VVol level. Using the system's
advanced QoS engine and policy-based management framework, VMware
administrators can define and enforce precise IOPS, throughput, and latency thresholds
for each VVol, ensuring that every VM receives the exact storage performance it requires
without impacting other workloads. This level of granular QoS control is a critical enabler
for enterprises running large-scale, high-density VMware environments with diverse
application and performance requirements.
The Huawei OceanStor Dorado 8000 incorporates advanced Quality of Service (QoS)
features that provide granular control over storage performance. This ensures that critical
applications receive the necessary resources to maintain optimal performance.
Key Features:
Granular QoS Controls: QoS policies can be applied at the individual Virtual Volume
(VVol) level, allowing administrators to define specific IOPS, throughput, and latency
thresholds for each VM. This level of granularity ensures that performance can be tailored
precisely to each application's needs.
Policy-Based Management: The Dorado 8000 integrates deeply with VMware's Storage
Policy-Based Management (SPBM) framework, enabling automated and consistent
application of QoS policies across the virtual environment. Administrators can create
and enforce storage policies that align with organisational performance and compliance
requirements.
In addition to QoS, the Dorado 8000's VVol implementation also provides deep
integration with VMware's vSphere Storage Policy-Based Management (SPBM)
framework, enabling policy-driven provisioning and optimisation of storage resources
across the entire VMware environment. Using SPBM policies, VMware administrators can
easily define and apply consistent storage configurations, performance profiles, and
Page 21 of 69
data protection requirements across individual VMs, VM clusters, or even the entire
virtual data centre.
The Dorado 8000 o ers robust support for VMware high availability (HA) and disaster
recovery (DR) solutions, including VMware Metro Storage Clusters (VMSC) and Site
Recovery Manager (SRM). For VMSC deployments, the Dorado 8000 leverages its active-
active HyperMetro technology to provide synchronous data replication and transparent
failover between two geographically separated storage clusters, ensuring continuous
data access and zero downtime for VMware environments.
When integrated with VMware SRM, the Dorado 8000 enables fully automated disaster
recovery workflows for entire VMware environments, including VM failover and failback,
network and storage resource mapping, and application-consistent recovery point
objectives (RPOs). VMware administrators can easily configure, test, and execute
comprehensive DR plans directly from the familiar vSphere interface, greatly simplifying
the management and operation of business continuity solutions.
The Huawei OceanStor Dorado 8000 integrates with a range of management and monitoring
tools to provide comprehensive oversight and control over the storage environment.
Key Features:
DME Storage Platform: The DME Storage platform o ers unified management capabilities,
including policy-based provisioning, risk management, and automated real-time operations.
This platform simplifies the management of complex storage environments and enhances
operational e iciency.
eService Platform: The eService platform provides proactive issue detection and resolution,
leveraging AI and machine learning to predict and mitigate potential problems before they
impact operations. This enhances the reliability and availability of the storage system.
Beyond its robust VVol, QoS, SPBM, and HA/DR integration, the Dorado 8000 also
provides a wealth of additional VMware optimisation features and capabilities. These
include support for VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes (vVols), VMware vSphere APIs for
Array Integration (VAAI), VMware vSphere APIs for Storage Awareness (VASA), and native
Page 22 of 69
When evaluating the Dorado 8000 against other storage platforms for
VMware environments, it's critical to consider the depth and
completeness of the integration across the entire VMware stack. Many
storage systems may claim to support VVols or provide basic VMware
integration but often lack the granular QoS controls, policy-based
management, and HA/DR capabilities required to truly optimize and
protect large-scale VMware deployments.
At the heart of the Dorado 8000's VVol performance management capabilities is its
seamless integration with VMware's Storage Policy-Based Management (SPBM)
framework. Using SPBM, VMware administrators can easily define reusable storage
policies that encapsulate specific performance, capacity, and data protection
requirements for individual VMs or groups of VMs. These policies can then be seamlessly
applied to individual VVols or VMware Storage Policy Components during provisioning or
configuration operations.
One of the key advantages of the Dorado 8000's SPBM integration is its ability to translate
high-level VMware storage policies into granular, hardware-level Quality of Service (QoS)
configurations on the underlying storage platform. When a new VVol is provisioned with
a specific SPBM policy, the Dorado 8000 automatically maps that policy to a
corresponding set of QoS parameters, such as IOPS limits, throughput thresholds, and
latency targets, and enforces those parameters at the individual VVol level.
This tight integration between VMware's policy-driven storage management and the
Dorado 8000's advanced QoS engine enables VMware administrators to easily define and
enforce precise performance Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for each individual VM or
application without requiring deep storage expertise or manual QoS configuration. By
allowing performance requirements to be specified using familiar VMware constructs
and abstractions, the Dorado 8000 simplifies storage performance management. It
ensures that every VM receives the exact level of storage performance it requires.
In addition to translating SPBM policies into granular QoS configurations, the Dorado
8000 also provides comprehensive performance monitoring and analytics capabilities
that are deeply integrated with the VMware ecosystem. Using the system's advanced
monitoring and reporting tools, VMware administrators can easily view real-time and
Page 24 of 69
historical performance metrics for individual VVols, including IOPS, latency, throughput,
and capacity utilisation.
VMware administrators can then use these forecasts to proactively adjust SPBM policies,
QoS configurations, and capacity allocations, ensuring that storage performance and
service levels remain optimised as workload requirements evolve over time. The Dorado
8000's intelligent analytics engine can even provide recommendations for rebalancing
VVol placements or implementing storage tiering to further enhance performance and
e iciency across the VMware environment.
When evaluating the Dorado 8000 against other storage platforms for
VMware environments, it's critical to consider the depth and
completeness of the VVol performance management integration. Many
storage systems may provide basic VVol support but lack the ability to
seamlessly translate VMware storage policies into granular, hardware-
enforced QoS configurations. Others may o er performance
monitoring capabilities, but they are isolated from the broader VMware
management stack, making it di icult to correlate storage
performance with VM-level metrics and workloads.
At the core of the Dorado 8000's large volume support is its advanced data placement
and I/O optimisation architecture. It intelligently distributes data across the system's
high-performance storage media and intelligent processors to ensure optimal
performance and parallelism, even for the largest volumes. Unlike traditional storage
platforms that may experience performance bottlenecks or resource contention as
volume sizes increase, the Dorado 8000 leverages a unique combination of technologies
to maintain consistent, predictable performance at any scale. This “predictable
performance” truly sets the Dorado apart from the competition.
One key enabler of the Dorado 8000's large-volume performance is its FlashLink®
intelligent I/O acceleration engine. FlashLink incorporates a range of advanced
algorithms and hardware acceleration techniques that optimise data placement, I/O
handling, and resource utilisation across the entire storage stack. These include
intelligent multi-core processing, automated load balancing, and cutting-edge
technologies like multi-streaming and full-stripe write acceleration.
By intelligently analysing and optimising data access patterns, the FlashLink engine
ensures that I/O operations are evenly distributed across all available system resources,
preventing bottlenecks and ensuring consistent, high-performance access to data,
regardless of volume size or capacity consumption. This level of hardware accelerated
I/O optimisation is a critical enabler for large volume support, as it ensures that the
Dorado 8000 can fully leverage the aggregate performance potential of its high-speed
NVMe SSDs and intelligent processors, even as capacity requirements grow.
Complementing its advanced I/O acceleration capabilities, the Dorado 8000 also
features a unique RAID 2.0+ data protection architecture optimised for large-volume
performance. Unlike traditional RAID implementations, which can introduce
performance bottlenecks or latency impacts as volumes scale, RAID 2.0+ leverages a
distributed, scale-out approach to data striping and parity calculation.
With RAID 2.0+, the Dorado 8000 intelligently stripes data across all available SSDs in the
system, enabling parallel access to data and eliminating potential hotspots or resource
contention. This ensures that I/O performance remains consistently high, even as
volumes grow to multi-petabyte capacities. RAID 2.0+ also supports dynamic capacity
expansion, allowing organisations to grow their large volumes seamlessly without
disruption or performance impact simply by adding additional storage enclosures to the
system.
The Dorado 8000 also incorporates intelligent caching and tiering technologies that
optimise data placement and accelerate I/O for hot or frequently accessed data to
enhance large-volume performance further. Using advanced machine learning
algorithms, the system continuously monitors data access patterns. It automatically
caches hot data on its high-performance NVMe SSDs or optional Storage Class Memory
(SCM) tiers while migrating cold or less active data to higher-capacity storage tiers.
Once defined, these QoS policies are automatically enforced by the Dorado 8000's
intelligent I/O scheduling and resource allocation engine, which continuously monitors
storage utilisation and dynamically adjusts resource allocations to ensure that each
workload receives its guaranteed performance level. This closed-loop QoS enforcement
occurs in real-time, with sub-millisecond response times, enabling the Dorado 8000 to
rapidly adapt to changing workload dynamics and prevent performance degradation due
to resource contention or "noisy neighbours."
A key advantage of the Dorado 8000's SmartQoS implementation is its ability to support
both hard QoS limits and soft QoS targets within the same policy framework. Hard limits
allow administrators to set absolute upper bounds on resource consumption for specific
workloads, e ectively capping their IOPS, throughput, or latency to prevent them from
impacting other applications. This is particularly useful for isolating mission-critical
workloads from non-essential applications or for enforcing strict performance
boundaries in multi-tenant environments.
Soft QoS targets, on the other hand, allow administrators to specify desired performance
levels for workloads without enforcing hard limits. The SmartQoS engine then intelligently
allocates available system resources to these workloads based on their relative priorities
and targets, automatically adjusting allocations in real time to optimise overall system
performance and resource utilisation.
For example, a high-priority database workload might be assigned a soft target of 100,000
IOPS, while a lower-priority analytics workload is given a soft target of 50,000 IOPS. If the
database only requires 80,000 IOPS at a given time, the SmartQoS engine would
Page 28 of 69
The Dorado 8000 also incorporates advanced monitoring, analytics, and forecasting
tools that provide comprehensive visibility into application performance and resource
utilisation across the storage environment to enhance its QoS capabilities further. Using
the system's intuitive dashboards and reporting interfaces, administrators can view real-
time and historical performance metrics for any application, volume, or LUN – including
critical KPIs like IOPS, latency, throughput, and capacity consumption.
The Dorado 8000's monitoring tools go beyond just surface-level metrics, providing deep
insights into internal QoS enforcement activities, resource allocations, and policy
compliance. Administrators can easily identify potential QoS bottlenecks or violations
and can quickly drill down into the root causes behind performance anomalies or
deviations from expected service levels.
To simplify QoS management and enforcement, the Dorado 8000 also exposes its entire
SmartQoS policy engine through a comprehensive set of APIs and automation hooks.
Using these programmatic interfaces, administrators can seamlessly integrate QoS
policies and enforcement into higher-level IT automation and orchestration workflows,
enabling true "storage-as-a-service" delivery models.
For example, IT operations teams can automatically configure and apply appropriate QoS
policies when provisioning new application environments as part of the broader
provisioning process, ensuring that performance requirements are consistently enforced
from day one. As application needs evolve, QoS policies can be dynamically adjusted
through automated workflows without requiring manual intervention or disrupting other
workloads.
When evaluating the Dorado 8000's QoS capabilities against competing storage
platforms, organisations must look beyond basic QoS controls or coarse-grained limits
based on volume or LUN boundaries. Many enterprise storage arrays provide rudimentary
QoS features that lack the granular control, intelligent multi-tenant isolation, and tight
integration with monitoring and automation required for e ective performance
management at scale.
To further enhance data resiliency and protection across geographic regions, the Dorado
8000 complements its HyperMetro synchronous replication with its intelligent
HyperReplication solution for asynchronous multi-site disaster recovery. Using
HyperReplication, organisations can create advanced multi-target 3DC replication
topologies that combine synchronous and asynchronous data movement across
multiple locations. This architecture tailors their HA/DR architecture to their precise
recovery objectives, cost requirements, and risk tolerance (Huawei Enterprise).
At the heart of the Dorado 8000's hybrid cloud solution is HyperCloud, an advanced cloud
data management platform that unifies on-premises and cloud-based storage resources
into a seamless, globally accessible data fabric. Through HyperCloud, on-premises
Dorado 8000 arrays can securely connect to a wide range of public cloud storage
services, including AWS S3, Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage, and Alibaba Cloud OSS,
as well as private and hybrid cloud object stores. This unique cloud data virtualisation
capability is powered by HyperCloud's scale-out distributed metadata architecture,
which maintains a globally coherent view of all data entities and their physical locations
across the storage fabric (Huawei Enterprise) (Huawei Support).
For mission-critical hybrid cloud use cases requiring the highest levels of availability and
data durability, HyperCloud enables the Dorado 8000's continuously available
HyperMetro and HyperReplication services to be extended into the cloud. This unique
capability allows enterprises to deploy true active/active synchronously replicated
storage infrastructures spanning on-premises data centres and one or more public
clouds, ensuring zero data loss and continuous operations in the event of a complete site
failure. This level of integration enables enterprises to build robust hybrid cloud business
continuity architectures, leveraging the Dorado 8000's mature HA/DR capabilities
without the limitations of cloud-only solutions (Huawei Support).
At the core of the Dorado 8000's multi-protocol capabilities is its advanced SAN and NAS
architecture, which leverages a high-performance, fully distributed file system and
intelligent QoS engine to deliver consistent, low-latency access to data across all
protocols and interfaces. The system supports a comprehensive range of industry-
standard protocols, including FC, iSCSI, FCoE, NFS, CIFS, HTTP, and S3, allowing it to

optimisation for all major hypervisors, including KVM, VMware, Hyper-V, and XenServer.
The system's virtualization-aware storage operating system and intelligent data
placement algorithms are specifically tuned to the unique I/O patterns and requirements
of virtualised workloads, ensuring optimal performance, scalability, and e iciency for
virtual machines and containers.
In KVM environments, the Dorado 8000 o ers a range of advanced storage features and
integration points that enable organisations to leverage the flexibility and cost-e iciency
of open-source virtualisation fully. The system provides full support for KVM's virtual disk
Page 36 of 69
formats and snapshot mechanisms, as well as advanced features like live migration, high
availability, and storage QoS.
Using the Dorado 8000's powerful storage management tools and APIs,
administrators can easily provision, monitor, and optimise storage
resources for their KVM environments while ensuring full data
consistency and availability across the entire virtualisation stack. The
system's intelligent QoS engine and auto-tiering capabilities enable
fine-grained performance optimisation for individual VMs and
applications, while its advanced data reduction and space e iciency
features help maximise capacity utilisation and lower overall storage
costs.
At the heart of the Dorado 8000's user authentication and authorisation capabilities is its
advanced, policy-based access control framework, which allows administrators to
define and enforce granular permissions and restrictions for individual users, groups, and
roles across the entire storage environment. Using the system's intuitive, web-based
management interface or powerful REST API, administrators can easily configure and
manage access control policies based on a wide range of criteria, including user identity,
group membership, network location, access protocol, and data sensitivity.
For example, administrators can create fine-grained access control rules that restrict
access to sensitive financial data to specific users or groups, such as members of the
finance department or auditors, while granting read-only access to other users for
reporting or analysis purposes. The Dorado 8000's access control engine can enforce
these policies in real-time, ensuring that only authorised users can access or modify
protected data, regardless of the access method or location.
To simplify user authentication and streamline access control management, the Dorado
8000 provides deep integration with Microsoft Active Directory, the most widely used
enterprise identity management platform. Using the system's AD integration features,
administrators can leverage their existing AD user accounts, groups, and permissions to
control access to storage resources without the need for separate user management or
authentication infrastructure.
The Dorado 8000 supports a range of AD integration modes, including full AD domain
membership, LDAP binding, and Kerberos authentication. This allows organisations to
choose the integration approach that best fits their security and compliance
requirements. For example, administrators can configure the Dorado 8000 to
automatically discover and synchronise AD user and group information, enabling real-
time user authentication and authorisation based on AD identities and permissions.
In addition to AD integration, the Dorado 8000 also provides full support for LDAP
authentication and authorisation, enabling integration with a wide range of third-party
Page 38 of 69
identity management systems and directories. Using the system's LDAP integration
features, administrators can leverage existing LDAP user accounts and group
memberships to control access to storage resources while taking advantage of advanced
LDAP features like nested groups, attribute-based access control, and user-defined
schemas.
Note: Many storage systems may claim to support AD or LDAP integration but often rely
on limited or proprietary APIs that can hinder interoperability, scalability, and ease of use.
Others may provide basic access control features but lack the fine-grained policy
controls, multi-factor authentication options, and advanced auditing capabilities needed
to meet the financial industry's strict security and compliance requirements.
The Dorado 8000 integrates seamlessly with industry-leading backup solutions like
NetBackup and Nakivo, which are already in place at the Bank, utilising SAN transport
mode. This integration ensures that existing backup processes can continue without
disruption, providing a seamless transition to the new storage environment. By leveraging
SAN transport mode, the system ensures high-speed data transfer during backup
operations, minimising the impact on production workloads and improving overall
backup performance (Huawei Support).
The Dorado 8000 o ers extensive support for VMware V-Vols, a groundbreaking
technology that revolutionises storage management for virtualised environments. V-Vols
enable storage to be provisioned, managed, and optimised at the individual virtual
machine (VM) level, significantly simplifying operations and improving overall e iciency.
This granular level of control ensures that each VM receives the necessary resources, and
backup operations can be tailored to the specific needs of each virtual environment
(Huawei Enterprise).
To enhance data protection, the Dorado 8000 integrates advanced snapshot and
replication technologies. HyperSnap provides high-performance, space-e icient
snapshot capabilities that allow for frequent, non-disruptive backups. These snapshots
can be integrated with backup solutions to provide point-in-time recovery options,
ensuring data consistency and minimising recovery times. Additionally,
HyperReplication o ers asynchronous replication capabilities, allowing backup data to
be securely replicated to remote sites for disaster recovery purposes (Huawei Support).
The Dorado 8000 is designed to scale e ortlessly with growing data protection needs. Its
architecture supports adding additional storage capacity and backup nodes without
disrupting ongoing operations. This scalability ensures that the system can handle
increasing data volumes and backup requirements, providing a future-proof solution for
enterprise data protection (Huawei Support).
The Huawei OceanStor Dorado 8000, however, stands apart as a truly unified, multi-
protocol storage platform that delivers unmatched versatility, performance, and
integration across Fibre Channel (FC), FC over IP (FCIP), and TCP/IP networking
environments. With its advanced SmartNIC intelligent-CPU I/O module design and
software-defined networking architecture, the Dorado 8000 enables organisations to
consolidate their storage infrastructure, simplify operations, and accelerate workloads
across any SAN or IP network fabric.
At the heart of the Dorado 8000's multi-protocol flexibility is its next-generation SmartNIC
technology, which combines ultra-high port density, dedicated processing resources,
and full hardware o load for every protocol stack. Each SmartNIC intelligent I/O module
contains multiple high-performance multi-core CPUs, hardware acceleration engines,
and large port bu ers – providing a massively parallel, end-to-end o loaded protocol
processing plane that eliminates the need for external gateways or adapters.
This advanced SmartNIC architecture enables the Dorado 8000 to natively support a
wide range of protocols, including 32Gbps FC, FC-NVMe, 100GbE iSCSI, NFS, SMB, and
S3 object storage, all with full hardware o load for maximum performance and
scalability. In contrast, many competing storage solutions rely on software-based
protocol processing or require additional adapters and gateways to support mixed
protocol environments, which can introduce performance bottlenecks, increased
complexity, and potential single points of failure.
On the Fibre Channel front, the Dorado 8000 delivers unmatched scalability and
performance, with support for up to 192 x 32Gbps FC ports per system and full
hardware o load for the latest FC-NVMe protocol. Each 32Gbps FC port can deliver
up to 6.4GB/s of full-duplex throughput with sub-10-microsecond latency, while FC-
NVMe ports provide up to 56Gbps of bandwidth – enabling organisations to unleash
the full performance potential of their NVMe-based storage infrastructure.
The Dorado 8000's SmartNIC architecture also provides extensive support for advanced
FC services like N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV), Virtual SANs (VSANs), FC Congestion
Page 42 of 69
Control (FCC), and FC-NVMe Auto Connect, simplifying SAN management, improving
quality of service, and enabling seamless end-to-end NVMe connectivity. These FC
o load and virtualisation capabilities are a key di erentiator versus some competing
solutions that still rely on software-based FC processing, which can impact
performance, scalability, and overall e iciency.
For long-distance data centre interconnect and remote replication scenarios, the Dorado
8000 o ers full hardware o load for the FC over IP (FCIP) protocol, enabling transparent,
IP-based extension of FC SANs over metro, regional, and global WAN links. The system's
SmartNIC CPUs handle all FCIP tunnel processing in hardware, including TCP/IP stack
processing, IPsec encryption, and compression, ensuring high throughput and low
latency even over high-latency, low-bandwidth WAN connections.
The Dorado 8000 supports all FCIP topologies, including point-to-point, point-to-
multipoint, and multipoint-to-multipoint, providing a flexible foundation for SAN
extension, multi-site synchronous, and asynchronous replication architectures. The
system can automatically negotiate FCIP tunnel parameters, optimise TCP window sizes,
and dynamically adjust compression ratios based on WAN conditions, maximising
performance and minimising the impact on production I/O workloads.
This highly optimised FCIP capability is a critical advantage over some competing mid-
range storage arrays that lack hardware FCIP o load, relying instead on software-based
tunnelling that cannot match the Dorado 8000's multi-gigabit WAN throughput and sub-
millisecond latencies. For global enterprises and banking institutions that need to
replicate data between geographically distributed sites, the Dorado 8000's FCIP
performance is a key enabler for ensuring data availability and business continuity.
On the TCP/IP side, the Dorado 8000 supports a comprehensive range of IP storage and
file protocols, including iSCSI, NFS, CIFS/SMB, HTTP/S, and S3 object storage, all with the
same SmartNIC full hardware o load as FC and FCIP. Each 100GbE port on the Dorado
8000 provides deterministic, ultra-low latency processing of all IP storage protocols in
hardware without the need for TCP O load Engines (TOE) adapters or other bolt-on
accelerators that can introduce complexity and potential bottlenecks.
For IP SAN connectivity, the Dorado 8000's iSCSI implementation delivers wire-
speed throughput and sub-40-microsecond latency per 100GbE port, with hardware
o load for iSCSI PDU processing, header and data digest verification, and iSER
(iSCSI Extensions for RDMA) using standard RoCE NICs. This level of performance
and hardware acceleration enables organisations to directly connect hundreds of
physical servers and VMs to the Dorado 8000 over 100GbE without any performance
impact, even with per-session authentication and IP security enabled.
In contrast, some competing storage arrays may only support iSCSI at lower port speeds
or require additional iSCSI gateways and adapters, which can add cost, complexity, and
potential performance bottlenecks. With the Dorado 8000, organisations can
consolidate all Ethernet storage connectivity on a single high-density, multi-protocol
100GbE fabric, radically simplifying IP SAN infrastructure and operations.
For enterprise NAS workloads, the Dorado 8000's built-in distributed SAN and NAS
unified file system provides native, high-performance file access over NFS and CIFS/SMB
protocols without the need for external file gateways or siloed architectures. This
integrated file storage capability enables organisations to consolidate Windows and
Linux file workloads directly on their SAN-attached Dorado 8000, with support for all
mainstream NAS features like nested quotas, snapshots, remote replication, antivirus,
and NDMP backup.
As with block protocols, all NAS protocol and file system processing on the Dorado 8000
is fully o loaded to the system's SmartNIC CPUs, ensuring high throughput, low latency,
and massive scalability for even the largest file shares and home directories. The
system's NFS and CIFS implementations are fully compliant with v3, v4, and v4.1
standards and include advanced security features like Kerberos, SEC_LABEL, and SMB
signing/encryption.
For cloud-native and web application workloads, the Dorado 8000 also provides high-
performance object storage access through HTTP/S and S3-compatible APIs, again with
full SmartNIC o load. The system's unique hardware acceleration for object metadata
processing, indexing, and garbage collection minimises latency and maximises object
I/O performance, even with billions of objects and petabyte-scale buckets.
Note: Many competing storage solutions may struggle to provide the same level of multi-
protocol flexibility and performance as the Dorado 8000. Some may rely on external
gateways or adapters for protocol support, which can introduce performance
bottlenecks and potential single points of failure. Others may provide only basic,
software-based protocol processing, limiting scalability and e iciency. By contrast, the
Dorado 8000's advanced SmartNIC architecture ensures optimal performance and
scalability across all supported protocols, making it the ideal choice for today's multi-
protocol, hybrid infrastructure needs.
At the heart of the Dorado 8000's NVMe architecture is its next-generation SmartIO
intelligent I/O module design, which combines ultra-high-performance NVMe SSDs,
state-of-the-art NVMe controllers, and a fully distributed, software-defined I/O stack to
provide consistent, low-latency access to data across all workloads and deployment
scenarios. Each SmartIO module contains multiple NVMe SSDs connected to a high-
speed PCIe Gen4 backplane, providing up to 4 million IOPS and sub-100-microsecond
latencies per module.
This advanced NVMe architecture is further enhanced by the Dorado 8000's intelligent
I/O scheduling and data placement algorithms, which optimise I/O processing and data
distribution across the entire storage system to ensure maximum performance and
resource utilisation. By intelligently analysing and optimising data access patterns, the
Dorado 8000's SmartIO engine can dynamically adjust queue depths, prioritise critical
I/O requests, and balance workloads across all available NVMe resources, delivering
consistent, predictable performance even under the most demanding conditions.
To further enhance NVMe performance, the Dorado 8000 also leverages NVMe over
Fabrics (NVMe-oF) technology, which enables direct, low-latency connectivity between
NVMe SSDs and remote servers over high-speed Ethernet or Fibre Channel networks.
Using NVMe-oF, the Dorado 8000 can extend the performance and e iciency benefits of
NVMe storage beyond the local array, providing ultra-fast, end-to-end NVMe connectivity
for distributed and scale-out workloads.
For example, in an NVMe-oF over Ethernet (RoCE) configuration, the Dorado 8000 can
deliver up to 100Gbps of bandwidth and sub-40-microsecond latencies per port,
enabling direct, high-performance NVMe access from hundreds of remote servers
and VMs. This level of performance and scalability is a critical advantage for latency-
sensitive applications like high-frequency trading, real-time analytics, and AI/ML
workloads, where even microseconds of added latency can impact results.
In addition to its unmatched NVMe performance, the Dorado 8000 also provides
comprehensive NVMe management and monitoring capabilities, ensuring that
administrators have full visibility and control over their NVMe resources. Using the
Page 46 of 69
system's built-in NVMe management tools, administrators can easily monitor NVMe SSD
health, performance, and utilisation, as well as configure and manage NVMe
namespaces, pools, and volumes.
The Dorado 8000's NVMe management features are fully integrated with its broader
management and automation stack, enabling seamless integration with third-party
monitoring and orchestration tools like VMware vRealize, Kubernetes, and OpenStack.
This level of integration ensures that NVMe resources can be dynamically provisioned,
monitored, and optimised as part of the larger IT environment, enabling true end-to-end
NVMe infrastructure automation.
Note: While Competing Storage might also o er NVMe-based storage solutions, their
implementation may lack the same level of hardware-accelerated I/O optimisation,
NVMe-oF support, and comprehensive management and monitoring capabilities
provided by the Dorado 8000. Some competing solutions may still rely on traditional SSDs
or hybrid architectures that cannot fully exploit the performance potential of NVMe,
limiting their ability to deliver consistent, low-latency access to data at scale.
Huawei has engineered the OceanStor Dorado 8000 from the ground up to be the
industry's most reliable and serviceable enterprise storage platform. With an ultra-
resilient scale-out architecture, comprehensive fault analytics, self-healing automation,
and a suite of integrated monitoring and support tools, OceanStor Dorado streamlines
every aspect of storage operations, empowering the Bank’ IT team to ensure 24x7x365
always-on data access.
At the core of OceanStor Dorado's availability and serviceability is its unique SmartMatrix
hardware design. Unlike traditional dual-controller or limited scale-up architectures,
SmartMatrix is a true scale-out storage cluster that grows seamlessly from 2 to 16 nodes.
Each node is a fully active/active building block with its own multi-core CPUs, cache,
ports, and SSDs, eliminating any single points of failure. All local and remote I/O,
metadata, and system operations are dynamically load-balanced across all nodes. The
failure or replacement of any node is fully transparent to hosts and applications. With the
OceanStor "Future-Proof" program, you can add, upgrade, or swap nodes at any time with
data-in-place and zero reconfiguration or migration.
The power of OceanStor Dorado's AIOps and eService automation truly shines at scale.
Consider a 16-node, multi-PB OceanStor Dorado cluster supporting hundreds of
databases and VMs. The OceanStor Dashboard provides a unified cloud-based portal to
monitor health, performance, and capacity KPIs across all components and nodes—with
guided drill-downs to analyse hotspots or anomalies. Dorado's DeviceManager API
allows all storage lifecycle operations—from LUN/filesystem provisioning to DR policy
configuration to firmware updates—to be automated as infrastructure-as-code and
integrated into higher-level orchestration systems. The onboard eService "AI brain"
proactively identifies, self-heals, or recommends fixes for dozens of "grey failures" and
resource imbalances before they impact applications.
The Huawei OceanStor Dorado 8000, however, sets a new standard for non-disruptive
upgrades and updates with its advanced hardware architecture, intelligent software
design, and comprehensive automation capabilities. From firmware updates to full
system upgrades, the Dorado 8000 enables organisations to seamlessly maintain and
modernise their storage infrastructure without impacting their mission-critical
applications or introducing operational disruptions.
At the heart of the Dorado 8000's non-disruptive upgrade capabilities is its unique, fully
redundant active-active architecture, which eliminates any single points of failure and
enables transparent, seamless failover and failback between system components.
Unlike traditional active-passive or clustered architectures that rely on idle standby
resources or external failover appliances, the Dorado 8000's active-active design ensures
that all system resources, including controllers, network interfaces, and storage media,
are fully utilised and actively serving I/O at all times.
This advanced architecture, coupled with the Dorado 8000's intelligent software design
and robust multi-pathing capabilities, enables organisations to perform firmware and
software updates on individual system components without impacting overall system
performance or data availability. As updates are applied to specific components, such
as controllers or network interface modules, the Dorado 8000 automatically and
transparently fails over workloads to the remaining active components, ensuring
continuous data access and uninterrupted application operations.
Once the updates are complete, the system seamlessly fails back the workloads to the
updated components without requiring any manual intervention or introducing
performance penalties or downtime. This automated failover and failback process
occurs in seconds, enabling organisations to maintain their strict service level
agreements (SLAs) and ensure business continuity throughout the upgrade process.
Beyond its advanced hardware architecture and intelligent software design, the Dorado
8000 also leverages advanced automation and orchestration capabilities to streamline
and simplify the upgrade and update process further. The system's comprehensive REST
APIs and management tools enable administrators to define and execute complex
upgrade workflows and policies, automating tasks such as pre-upgrade system checks,
component sequencing, and post-upgrade validation.
The Dorado 8000's intelligent upgrade engine can automatically validate firmware and
software packages, check system health and compatibility, and ensure that all
prerequisites are met before proceeding with the upgrade process. This level of
automated pre-checks and validation helps to minimise the risk of errors or unexpected
behaviour during the upgrade, further enhancing system uptime and reliability.
During the actual upgrade process, the Dorado 8000 employs a range of advanced
techniques to maintain data availability and performance, including live migration of
workloads between components, dynamic I/O path selection and load balancing, and
intelligent data caching and de-staging algorithms. These techniques ensure that I/O
operations are always served from the active components, minimising latency and
potential disruptions.
The Huawei OceanStor Dorado 8000, however, redefines the concept of storage
scalability with its unique, software-defined architecture and advanced data
management capabilities. Whether scaling capacity vertically (North) or scaling
performance horizontally (East), the Dorado 8000 enables organisations to seamlessly
and non-disruptively expand their storage infrastructure, ensuring continuous operations
and optimal resource utilisation as their data and application demands evolve.
At the core of the Dorado 8000's scalability capabilities is its fully distributed, scale-out
storage operating system, which intelligently abstracts and manages data across a
unified, shared resource pool spanning multiple controllers, network interfaces, and
storage media. Unlike traditional monolithic architectures that often introduce
bottlenecks or resource contention as capacity or performance demands increase, the
Dorado 8000's software-defined design enables linear, independent scaling of capacity
and performance resources.
For scaling capacity (North), the Dorado 8000 supports seamless, non-disruptive
expansion of storage media through the addition of high-density disk enclosures or
individual solid-state drives (SSDs). As new storage capacity is added to the system, the
Dorado 8000's intelligent data placement and load-balancing algorithms automatically
redistribute data across the expanded resource pool, ensuring optimal performance and
utilisation without any manual intervention or application disruptions. This level of
granular, non-disruptive capacity expansion is a key di erentiator for the Dorado 8000,
as many competing storage solutions often require complex data migrations, system
downtime, or complete forklift upgrades to accommodate capacity growth. With the
Dorado 8000, organisations can start small and incrementally expand their storage
capacity as needed, avoiding over-provisioning and maximising their return on
investment.
For scaling performance (East), the Dorado 8000 o ers unmatched flexibility and non-
disruptive scalability through its unique, fully active-active architecture and support for
independent controller and network interface expansion. As application demands or
workload densities increase, organisations can seamlessly add additional controllers
Page 53 of 69
and network interfaces to the Dorado 8000 cluster, linearly increasing the system's
overall processing power, network bandwidth, and I/O parallelism.
Unlike traditional architectures that often require complex configuration changes, data
migrations, or system downtime to accommodate performance scaling, the Dorado
8000's software-defined design and intelligent data management capabilities enable
truly non-disruptive performance expansion. As new controllers and network interfaces
are added to the system, the Dorado 8000 automatically redistributes workloads and
data across the expanded resource pool, ensuring optimal load balancing and consistent
performance without any manual intervention or application disruptions.
In addition to its flexible, non-disruptive scalability capabilities, the Dorado 8000 also
incorporates advanced automation and orchestration tools that further simplify the
scaling process and minimise the risk of errors or operational disruptions. Using the
system's comprehensive REST APIs and management tools, administrators can define
and execute complex scaling workflows and policies, automating tasks such as capacity
monitoring, growth forecasting, and resource provisioning.
The Dorado 8000's intelligent scaling engine can continuously monitor system utilisation
and performance metrics, automatically identifying potential bottlenecks or resource
constraints before they impact application performance. Based on customisable
policies and forecasting algorithms, the engine can then recommend and initiate scaling
actions, such as adding additional storage enclosures or controllers, to address capacity
or performance demands proactively.
In contrast, many competing storage solutions may struggle to provide the same level of
flexible, non-disruptive scalability as the Dorado 8000. Some solutions may o er limited
scaling capabilities, often requiring complex manual processes, data migrations, or
system downtime to accommodate capacity or performance growth. Others may provide
basic scaling options but lack the advanced automation, orchestration, and data integrity
Page 54 of 69
capabilities of the Dorado 8000, increasing the risk of operational disruptions or data
inconsistencies during the scaling process.
This is where Huawei OceanStor Dorado 8000 truly excels. With its advanced multi-
tenancy and resource isolation capabilities, OceanStor Dorado enables financial
institutions to consolidate multiple applications and workloads securely and e iciently
onto a single storage platform without sacrificing performance, availability, or data
sovereignty.
For example, let's say you have a mission-critical trading application that requires ultra-
low latency and high IOPS, running alongside a batch analytics workload that tends to
generate large, sequential I/O patterns. With OceanStor Dorado's RPP, you can create
separate tenant domains for each workload and allocate specific CPU cores, cache
partitions, and QoS policies to each one, ensuring that the trading application always
gets the fast path through the system while the analytics workload is served from a
separate pool of resources.
What's more, OceanStor Dorado's RPP is fully programmable and API-driven, meaning
you can dynamically adjust the Bank’s tenant configurations and resource allocations on
the fly without any downtime or disruption. For example, if you need to temporarily boost
the performance of the Bank’s trading application to handle a spike in market activity, you
can call the OceanStor Dorado API to increase its CPU and cache quotas and then dial
them back down when the spike subsides.
This kind of granular, on-demand resource control is a key di erentiator for OceanStor
Dorado versus legacy arrays that rely on static, pre-defined QoS policies and rigid
hardware partitioning. With OceanStor Dorado, you can dynamically adapt the Bank’s
tenant configurations to match the changing needs of the Bank’s business, ensuring that
each application always has the resources it needs to meet its SLAs.
However, resource isolation is only part of the multi-tenancy story. To truly ensure data
security and compliance in a shared storage environment, you also need strong access
controls, data encryption, and auditing capabilities. And this is another area where
OceanStor Dorado excels.
Automatic Data-at-Rest Encryption: For all tenant data, using FIPS 140-2
validated algorithms and hardware-based key management.
With these advanced security features, OceanStor Dorado enables you to confidently
consolidate multiple tenants and workloads onto a single platform while still maintaining
the strict access controls, data privacy, and compliance posture that the Bank’s business
demands.
When it comes to performance isolation, OceanStor Dorado's intelligent QoS engine and
machine learning capabilities take multi-tenancy to a whole new level. Unlike legacy
arrays that rely on static, pre-defined performance policies, OceanStor Dorado uses
advanced ML algorithms to continuously monitor the I/O patterns and resource
utilisation of each tenant and dynamically adjust its QoS settings to ensure optimal
performance and eliminate contention.
For example, let's say you have two tenants running on the same OceanStor Dorado
system—one with a database workload that generates mostly random I/O and another
with a big data analytics workload that generates mostly sequential I//O. Ordinarily, these
two workloads would compete for the same system resources, potentially leading to
"noisy neighbour" issues and performance degradation.
With OceanStor Dorado's intelligent QoS engine, the system can automatically detect
these di erent I/O patterns and adjust its resource allocation policies on the fly. For
example, it might dedicate more cache and CPU resources to the database tenant to
accelerate its random I/O performance while throttling back the sequential I/O of the
analytics tenant to avoid starving other workloads.
For example, let's say you have a tenant domain that includes multiple
database instances, each with its own set of volumes and LUNs. With
OceanStor Dorado's tenant-aware QoS, the system can automatically
identify these related resources and treat them as a single, logical
entity for QoS purposes. So, if one database instance starts
experiencing performance issues, the system can automatically boost
its resource allocations without impacting the other instances in the
same tenant.
And the best part? All of these advanced multi-tenancy and QoS
features are fully integrated into OceanStor Dorado's management and
orchestration framework, making it easy to provision, monitor, and
optimise The Bank’s tenant environments at scale.

availability. The plugin leverages ScienceLogic’s advanced data collection, analytics, and
visualisation capabilities to deliver cross-domain insights that span storage, computing,
networking, and applications, enabling end-to-end visibility and contextual
understanding of performance issues.
The ScienceLogic plugin enhances the OceanStor Dorado 8000’s monitoring capabilities
with advanced analytics and machine learning algorithms. These technologies detect
anomalies and performance deviations in real-time, triggering automated responses to
mitigate potential issues before they impact end-users. For instance, if the system
detects a spike in latency or a drop in throughput, it can automatically adjust resource
allocations or notify administrators with actionable insights to resolve the problem
swiftly.
The SL1 platform from ScienceLogic improves service performance by leveraging cross-
domain topology to correlate and assess impacts, reduce event noise, expedite
troubleshooting, and avoid outages. This ensures that the storage environment operates
optimally and that any disruptions are promptly addressed.
The ScienceLogic plugin integrates seamlessly with IT Service Management (ITSM) and

A) SCM
is a revolutionary non-volatile memory technology that sits between DRAM and NAND
flash in terms of performance, capacity, and cost. It o ers several advantages over
traditional storage media:
i. Low Latency: SCM delivers significantly lower latency compared to NAND flash,
approaching the performance of DRAM. This results in faster data access and
improved application responsiveness, which is critical for latency-sensitive
applications such as databases and real-time analytics.
ii. High Bandwidth: With its high-speed interface, SCM provides substantially higher
bandwidth than NAND flash, enabling faster data transfer rates. This is essential
for high-throughput workloads that require rapid data movement.
iv. Persistence: As a non-volatile memory technology, SCM retains data even when
power is lost, ensuring data durability. This makes it suitable for new use cases,
such as persistent memory programming, where data needs to be quickly
accessible and durable.
ii. Intelligent Tiering with SCM: Huawei's intelligent multi-tier caching algorithm
automatically identifies hot and cold data and places it in the appropriate storage
tier (SCM, SSD, or HDD) based on access patterns. This ensures optimal
utilisation of SCM resources and maximises performance .
iii. Scalable SCM Capacity: The OceanStor Dorado 8000 and 18000 support up to
1.6 TB of SCM per controller, providing ample capacity for caching and tiering
purposes. As SCM densities increase, these systems will be able to
accommodate even larger SCM capacities, future-proofing the investment for
enterprises .
ii. Reduce Storage Costs: Utilizing SCM as a caching tier allows OceanStor Dorado
systems to reduce the amount of expensive DRAM required while still delivering
comparable performance. This helps lower overall storage costs without
compromising on performance, making it a cost-e ective solution for enterprises
.
