What are the differences between the counter modules FM350-2, FM350-1 and
ET200S1Count when determining measuring results?
Entry Associated product(s)

Description
The differences between the counter modules FM350-2, FM350-1 and ET200S1Count when determining measuring results are described below.

FM350-2
In the FM350-2 manual, a specified requirement for useful measuring is that at least two rising edge must occur in one measuring cycle. In fact, the module
always produces a measured value when at least one pulse per measuring cycle occurs. This also applies to the case when the intervals between the
pulses are significantly longer than the time window, as shown in the figure below (Fig. 01) for the Frequency Measuring operating mode (measuring cycle
in figure: 100ms, Input signal frequency: 25Hz).

Depending on the minimum measuring frequency and the time window, you can select the following procedure.

Smallest frequency
to be measured is Precautions in the user program Example

If you set a measuring cycle of 100ms, you can measure frequencies
… greater than A valid measured value is returned every measuring cycle; no
greater than 10 Hz (corresponds to one period of less than 100ms)

without any special procedure.
The measured value is valid if it is not equal to zero. Likewise, If you set a measuring cycle of 100ms and you want to measure
… less than 1/time
ignore the measured value if it is zero or include a special frequencies less than 10 Hz (corresponds to one period of less than
window
procedure for this value in your user program. 100ms), you must take the precautions mentioned.

Similar conditions also apply to the other measuring modes of Rotational speed measurement and Period measurement.

FM350-1
The counter module FM350-1 always works with a dynamic measuring period. This means that 2 rising edges are not recognized on the measuring signal
before the parameterized measuring period expires, an estimated measured value is calculated form the dynamic measuring period assuming that one
pulse has occurred at the end of the Update time. Unlike FM350-2, you obtain a constant measured value as shown in the figure below (Fig. 02).

ET200S 1Count
Depending on the parameterization, the counter module ET200S 1Count works with a fixed measuring period (integration time) or a dynamic measuring
period (continuous measurement).

With integration The measurement is performed during the integration time parameterized. When the integration time expires, the measured value is
time updated. If there were not at least two rising edges in the parameterized integration time, then 0 is returned as measured value.

Unlike FM350-2, you obtain a constant measured value as shown in Fig. 02.

Security information
In order to protect technical infrastructures, systems, machines and networks against cyber threats, it is necessary to
implement – and continuously maintain – a holistic, state-of-the-art IT security concept. Siemens’ products and solutions
