Personnel working with or near high voltages should be familiar with modern methods of
resuscitation.
WARNING
QUALIFIED PERSONNEL
Persons who are not qualified electrical personnel shall not open any control panel nor perform
maintenance on any electrical component when the power is or may be on. Such persons shall
not service nor perform maintenance on any electrically controlled component unless and until a
qualified electrical person notifies them that all of the power is disconnected and tagged "OUT
OF SERVICE".
WARNING
Turn off circuit and tag "OUT OF SERVICE" prior to disconnecting electrical leads.
CAUTION
This system contains multiple power feeds. Prior to performing maintenance, ensure all circuit
breakers that provide power to the system are open and tagged “Out of Service”.
SECTION 1 - INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL
The next generation Solid State Shaft Tachometer System from EMI uses a non-contact method
using inductive proximity sensors to measure both the speed and direction of propeller shaft
rotation.
An inductive proximity sensor consists of a coil and ferrite core arrangement, an oscillator and
detector circuit, and a solid-state output (see Figure 1-1). The oscillator creates a high frequency
field concentrated to the front of the sensor by the ferrite core. The output of the oscillator circuit
changes when a metal object enters this high-frequency field. The detector circuit recognizes the
specific changes in the oscillator output and generates a signal which will turn the sensor’s solid-
state output “ON” or “OFF”.
When a target is in front of a sensor, an output indicator located on the back of the sensor
illuminates and the output signal is 24 VDC. When a target is not in front of a sensor, the
indicator is off and the sensor output signal is 0V.
Each time the target passes the speed sensor, a 24VDC pulse is generated. When the shaft is
turning slowly, the frequency that these pulses are generated is relatively low. As shaft rotation
speed increases, the frequency of the pulses generated also increases. Circuitry within the Shaft
Tach Controller receives these pulse signals from the speed sensor and calculates the shafts
revolutions per minute.
The steel targets are arranged on the shaft coupling in such a way that if the shaft is rotating in one
direction, the speed target will pass the speed probe before the direction target passes the direction
probe. As the shaft rotates in the opposite direction, the speed target will pass the speed probe after
the direction target passes its probe.
The same circuitry within in the Shaft Tach Controller that receives the pulse signal from the
speed sensor also receives this pulse signal from the direction sensor. This circuitry determines
the direction of the shaft’s rotation based on the occurrence of the pulse signals relative to one
another. The direction of the shaft’s rotation determines whether the RPM value transmitted via
the serial RS-485 communication is positive (Ahead rotation) or negative (Astern rotation).
The proximity pickups are connected to the Shaft Tach Controller (9999-52970) via provided
cables. This equipment uses the pulses from one pick-up to determine shaft rotational speed based
on the number of pulses detected in the defined time. The positions of the two targets are offset
from one another approximately ½” along the shaft’s axis. The shaft tach equipment uses the pulse
from this second offset sensor to determine the direction of the shaft’s rotation based on the
occurrence of the pulse with relation to the speed pick-up’s pulse. See Figure 3-1 for target
mounting locations.

SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION
3.1 Target Mounting
Two cylindrical steel targets, 1-1/4" in diameter and 3/4" in height, are provided with each
Proximity Pick-up Assembly (Part No. 9999-52960). One target is provided for determining the
direction of the shaft rotation and one target is provided for the shaft’s speed of rotation. Each
target is attached to the shaft coupling with a 1/4-20 Allen head bolt. Figure 3-1 shows the
target location relative to the shaft centerline and coupling.

CENTER LINE
1. Adjust the speed and direction sensors so that the face of each sensor is 1/4 inch (+/-1/16”)
from their respective targets.
2. Verify the 24VDC power is applied to the Shaft Tach system.
3. Each sensor is provided with an output indicator located on the back of the sensor body.
Verify that when the target is NOT aligned with the face of the sensor that the indicator on
the sensor is NOT illuminated. This indicates the sensor does not detect the presence of a
metal within its sensing range.
4. Move the propeller shaft to rotate each target to be aligned with the face of their respective
sensors. Verify the indicator on each sensor illuminates when the target is alighted with the
sensor’s face.
Verify the meter is connected to the shaft tach pick-up system per the diagram provided in the
Electrical Connections section of this manual.
Enter the menu screen to configure and calibrate the meter by pressing and holding down the
MENU and ▲key for five seconds. The meter configuration screen shown below will be
displayed.
1. Meter Configuration on the meter P/N 9999-50920-SASW is fixed for Shaft Tach
application with RS-485 communication and cannot be modified. Press the ENTER key
to display the meter range configuration.
2. Press the ▼ key to change the resolution of the digital readout located below the analog
meter face. The default resolution is 5 RPM. Meter resolutions of 1 and 10 RPM are
also available.
3. Press the ENTER key to save any configuration changes and display the Display
Configuration Screen.
2. Press the ▼ key to change the direction the meter needle rotates indicating shaft
direction. If after initial setup the meter is observed to display the opposite shaft rotation
direction from actual, set this option set to REVERSE to display the correct direction the
shaft is rotating. NORMAL is the default setting.
3. Press the ENTER key to save any configuration changes and display the Calibration
screen.

5.4 Calibration
Calibration consists of simply assigning the left legend to match the appropriate Shaft Tach RPM
to be displayed at this meter location. NOTE: It is important that the jumper settings on the
shaft controller, P/N 9999-52970 be configured for the shaft location being monitored, i.e. Port,
Center, Starboard.
1. Press the ▲ key to change the left legend to match the corresponding shaft position
being monitored. Possible selections are PORT, STBD, CTR and blank (No Legend).
NOTE: Select blank (No Legend) for vessels with only one shaft.
2. Press the ▼ key to change the right legend to either RPM or Blank. (No Legend).
3. Press the ENTER key to save any changes, exit the configuration menus and display the
Meter screen.
