Carl Rogers
- I and Me is different.
- Self-concept is what comes to your mind when you are asked.
- Identity is composed of one’s personal characteristics, social roles, and responsibility.
George Herbert Mead
- Full development of self is attained when the I and the me are united.
What are roles?
- They are constellations of behavior that are responses to sets of behaviors of other human
beings.
- Role playing involves taking the attitudes or perspective of others.
- Role is not enough to form Self.

How does the self arise?


- For mead self is not inborn.
- 3 Stages:
- Preparatory Stage 0-3 years old
No self is develop because it’s all
Example: Children copy/mimick the behavior of those around them without
understanding the reason behind.
- Play Stage 3-5 years old
Children starts to relate themselves to others.
Role-taking is exhibited in this stage.
Self emerges/developing as child pretend to take roles.
- Game Stage (early school stage 8-9 years old)
Children have broader perspective regarding other people’s roles.
Can take multiple roles.
Self is developed by understanding that there are rules to follow in order to win
the game.
In this stage, self is present.
The generalized other
- Organized community or social group which gives to the individual his unity of self.
- The attitude of generalized other is the attitude of the whole community.
Normative Order Conscience collective
- No one no ability to take the role of the other.
- One other in one situation
- Many others in one situations.
- Many other in many situations.

Two sides of self: Me and I


- Me is considered the socialized aspect of the individual.
- I is considered to be the present and the future phase of the self.
The SELF is essentially a social process going on between the I and Me.
- Have a didactic relationship (intrusive)

- Unsocialized and spontaneous
- Acting part
- Immediate response to other
- The creative part of the self

ME
- The internalization of exterior social order.
- With generalized other when making decisions.

The socialization process


- Trying to be a part of a group.
- Family
Primary function is to reproduce and socialize.
- Media
Socialization agents for children and adults in several ways.
- Peer group
Peaks during adolescence
Short term interest
- Religion
Children tend to develop the same religious belief as their parents.
- School
In school, teachers and other students are the source of expectations that
encourage children to think and behave in particular ways.
