Example questions of Topic 7: Specific heat capacity and specific latent heat

Key points

1) Specific heat capacity ( C )

Definition: the amount of thermal energy required to raise the
temperature of 1 kg of mass by 1°C.

Remember the Specific Heat Equation for calculating the amount of

energy required to raise a certain amount of substance.

2) Latent heat
Definition: the energy required to change the state of a substance,
including
 Latent heat of fusion (between solid and liquid)
 Latent heat of vaporisation (between liquid and gas)
3) Specific latent heat ( L )
Definition: the amount of thermal energy required to change the state of
1 kg of substance with no change in temperature.

Remember the Latent Heat Equation for calculating the latent heat
required to change the state of a certain amount of substance.
Level 1

The amount of thermal energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of

mass by 1°C.
Level 2
Level 3

Latent heat of fusion involves the phase change from solid to liquid. Latent
heat of vaporisation involves the phase change from liquid to gas.

It’s latent heat of vaporisation, the energy needed is 1132075.472 J/kg
