Lesson Outline:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

Begin with a brief discussion on what fractions are.


Show a pie chart divided into equal parts.

Explain that fractions represent parts of a whole.

Example: If a pie is divided into 4 equal parts, each part is 1/4 of the pie.

2. Direct Instruction (20 minutes)

Introduce the terms numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number).

Show examples of different fractions using fraction charts.

Write several fractions on the chalkboard and explain each one.

Demonstrate how to compare fractions using visuals (e.g., 1/2 vs. 1/4).

3. Guided Practice (15 minutes)

Distribute worksheets with various fractions.

Work through the first few problems as a class.

Allow students to complete the remaining problems in pairs.

4. Independent Practice (10 minutes)

Give students flashcards with different fractions.

Ask them to arrange the flashcards in order from smallest to largest.

Walk around the room to provide assistance as needed.

5. Conclusion (5 minutes)

Ask a few students to share what they learned about fractions.
