Cardiac arrest vs Death
• Cardiac arrest ≈ Cardiopulmonary arrest:
• Reversible loss of all heart function and/or respiration which
results in death if appropriate steps are not taken.
• Death:
• Non-reversible loss of heart function, respiration and brain
function.
Basic Life Support
• Basic Life Support or BLS (Red Cross):
• Cares that first-responders, healthcare providers and public safety
professionals provide to anyone who is experiencing cardiac arrest,
respiratory distress or an obstructed airway.
• It requires knowledge and skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),
using automated external defibrillators (AED) and relieving airway
obstructions in patients of every age.
Basic Life Support
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR):
• Emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops
beating (AHA).
• Automated External Defibrillator (AED):
• Easy-to-use medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if
necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart
re-establish an effective rhythm (Red Cross).
• Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO).

Chain of survival
• Bystander CPR is associated with a better neurological
outcome in adults and children.
• Rescuers who have been taught adult Basic Life Support (BLS)
or the chest compression-only sequence and have no specific
knowledge of pediatric resuscitation may use this, as the
outcome is worse if they do nothing. However, it is better to
provide rescue breaths as part of the resuscitation sequence
when applied to children as the asphyxia nature of most
pediatric cardiac arrests needs for ventilation as part of
effective CPR.

Unresponsive?
• Ensure safetyof rescuer and child. Check for responsiveness to
verbal and tactile stimulation. Ask bystanders to help.
• If
the child does not respond, open the airway, and assess
breathing for no longer than 10 s.
Open airway
• Ifyou have difficulty, opening
the airway with head tilt –chin
lift or specifically in cases of
trauma, use a jaw thrust.
• Inthe first few minutes after a
cardiac arrest, a child may be
taking slow infrequent gasps. If
you have any doubt whether
breathing is normal, act as if it
is not normal.
Open airway
• Look for respiratory effort, listen to
and feel for movement of air from
the nose and/or mouth. If there is
effort but no air movement, the
airway is not open.
• In cases where there is more than one
rescuer, a second rescuer should call
the EMS immediately upon
recognition of unconsciousness,
preferably using the speaker
function of a mobile phone.
Five rescue breaths
• Inthe unresponsive child, if
breathing is absent or
abnormal: give five initial
rescue breaths.
• For infants, ensure a neutral
position of the head. In older
children, more extension of the
head will be needed (head tilt).
• Blow steadily into the child's
mouth (or infant's mouth and nose)
for about 1 second, sufficient to
make the chest visibly rise.

• If you have difficulty achieving an
effective breath, the airway may
be obstructed: remove any visible
obstruction. Do not perform a
blind finger sweep. Reposition
the head or adjust airway opening
method. Make up to five
attempts to achieve effective
breaths, if still unsuccessful, move
on to chest compressions.
Five rescue breaths
• If
there is only one rescuer, with a mobile phone, he or she
should call help first (and activate the speaker function)
immediately after the initial rescue breaths. Proceed to the
next step while waiting for an answer. If no phone is readily
available perform 1 min of CPR before leaving the child.
• In
cases where PBLS providers are unable or unwilling to start
with ventilations, they should proceed with compressions and
add into the sequence ventilations as soon as these can be
performed.

chest compressions, unless
there are clear signs of
circulation (such as movement
or coughing). Rather than
looking at each factor
independently, focus on
consistent good quality
compressions as defined by…

• Rate: 100-120 per minute for both
infants and children.
• Depth: depress the lower half of the
sternum by at least one third of the
anterior-posterior dimension of the
chest. Compressions should never be
deeper than the adult 6 cm limit
(approx. an adult thumb's length).
• Recoil: avoid leaning. Release all
pressure between compressions and
allow for complete chest recoil.

• When possible, perform
compressions on a firm
surface. Move the child only
if this results in markedly
better CPR conditions
(surface or accessibility).
Remove clothes only if they
severely hinder chest
compressions.
Infant
• Preferablyuse a two-thumb
encircling technique for
chest compression in infants
- be careful to avoid
incomplete recoil. Single
rescuers might alternatively
use a two-finger technique.
