DATA SHEET
CRYSTIC® 406PA
Low Styrene Emission and Low Exotherm
Polyester Resin
Introduction
Crystic 406PA is a pre-accelerated, thixotropic orthophthalic unsaturated polyester resin, with low styrene emission. Its
rapid impregnation of glass fibre reinforcements, and low exotherm temperature, make it ideal for multi-layer laminates, in
spray or hand lay applications.

Crystic 406PA exhibits reduced exothermic heat on curing. This makes it suitable for the construction of thicker laminates
where exothermic heat build up may distort the moulding or cause excessive shrinkage.

Applications
Crystic 406PA is recommended for the manufacture of boat hulls, vehicle bodies and industrial mouldings.

Approvals
Crystic 406PA is approved by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping for use in the construction of craft under their survey.

Formulation
Crystic 406PA should be allowed to attain workshop temperature (18ºC - 20ºC) before use. Stir well by hand, or with a
low shear mixer to avoid aeration, and then allow to stand to regain thixotropy. Crystic 406PA requires only the addition
®
of a catalyst to start the curing reaction. The recommended catalyst for normal conditions is Andonox KP9. Catalyst
®
Norox MEKP-925H will increase the pot life under hot conditions. The catalyst should be thoroughly incorporated into
the resin, with a low shear mechanical stirrer where possible.

Crystic 406PA is formulated for room temperature curing applications. It requires only addition of the correct amount of
catalyst to start the curing reaction. The recommended formulations are given in Table 1:

Table1: Recommended formulations for room temperature curing of Crystic 406PA.

Curing should not be carried out at temperatures below 15°C. Scott Bader (Pty) Ltd. will not be liable for problems
caused by use at lower temperatures than recommended. The resin must be allowed to attain workshop temperature
before being formulated for use. 20°C is recommended.

N.B. Peroxide catalysts are highly reactive and may decompose with explosive violence, or cause
fires, if they come into contact with flammable materials, metals or accelerators. For this reason
they must never be stored in metal containers or be mixed directly with accelerators.

Additives
The addition of certain pigments, fillers or extra styrene may adversely affect the properties of Crystic 406PA. Users
should seek advice from our Technical Service Department before making any additions.

Post Curing
Satisfactory laminates for many applications can be made from Crystic 406PA by curing at workshop temperature (20ºC).
For optimum properties and long term performance, however, laminates should be post cured before being put into
service. The laminate should be allowed to cure for 24 hours at 20ºC, and then be oven cured for 3 hours at 80ºC or 16
hours at 40ºC.

Storage
Crystic 406PA should be stored in the dark in suitable closed containers. It is recommended that the storage
temperature should be less than 20ºC where practical, but should not exceed 30ºC. Ideally, containers should be
opened only immediately prior to use. Where they have to be stored outside, it is recommended that drums be kept in a
horizontal position to avoid the possible ingress of water.

Parts by Weight Formulation

No.1
Crystic 125PA 100
Catalyst M 2

Curing
Crystic 125PA requires only the addition of catalyst to start the curing reaction. It should be thoroughly dispersed in the
resin. The accelerated resin without catalyst will usually remain usable at ambient temperature (25°C) for approximately
3 months. Shortly before use, the correct amount of catalyst should be added and stirred thoroughly into the mixture.
When catalyst is added to resin which has been accelerated for several days, the pot life may be shorter than that of
freshly accelerated resin.

Additives and Variants

The information contained in this technical data sheet applies to all pigmented versions.
®
A topcoat version of this material is available called 65PAX. The topcoat can be formulated by addition of 2% Crystic Solution MW into the
®
gelcoat. A non-accelerated version, Crystic Gelcoat 65, can also be supplied.
Incorporation of additional material may affect the working, weathering or cured properties of the gelcoat. Please check with Scott Bader’s
Technical Service department before using the gelcoat outside of specified parameters.

Post-Curing
®
Satisfactory laminates for many applications can be made with Crystic Gelcoat 65PA by curing at workshop temperature (15⁰C - 25⁰C).
However, for optimum properties, laminates must be post-cured before being put into service. The moulding should be allowed to cure for 24
hours at workshop temperature, and then oven-cured for 16 hours at 40°C.

Recommended Testing
It is recommended that customers test all pigmented gelcoats before use under their own conditions of application to ensure that the
product meets requirements.

Packaging and Storage

®
Crystic Gelcoat 65PA is supplied in 25kg and 225kg containers.
®
Crystic Gelcoat 65PA should be stored in its original container, under cover, and out of direct sunlight. These must be kept closed and
airtight. It is recommended that the storage temperature should be less than 25°C and the product should not be frozen. Storing the product
outside of these conditions may affect the properties of the product and reduce its shelf life. Ideally, containers should be opened only
immediately prior to use. Material should be used within 5 months from date of production.

Health and Safety

Read and understand separate Material Safety Data Sheet before using this product. Unsaturated polyester products release heat when they
cure in bulk.

Crystic Gelcoat 65PA

Crystic® Polyester
Pigment Pastes

Product Description
®
Crystic Polyester Pigment Pastes are specially formulated for use in polyester gelcoats and resins. Scott Bader manufacture and keep stock of
20 pigment pastes which are used in combination to produce British Standard, RAL standards, the NCS Range as well as special matches to
individual customer requirements.

® ®
Crystic Polyester Pigment Pastes are formulated for use and have been fully tested in most Crystic products. They can be used with other
gelcoat and resin systems; however, we do not guarantee their performance in these products. To avoid problems with viscosity, colour
separation, water and chemical resistance and weathering, it is recommended that sample tests are carried out by the customer before use.
Some colours are not suitable for low-taint applications.
®
Crystic Polyester Pigment Pastes can be used for other applications not involving polyesters, e.g. epoxy flooring. Sample tests should always
be carried out by the customer before use. Please consult our Technical Service Department for any advice on the above applications.

Formulation
® ®
Scott Bader purchase high performance pigment powders which are finely dispersed in a Crystic resin to manufacture Crystic Polyester
®
Pigment Pastes. Crystic Polyester Pigment Pastes do not contain any fillers or other extenders
®
The level of Crystic Polyester Pigment Paste required to achieve sufficient performance and opacity will depend on the colour. For white or
pale colours we recommend you purchase the white gelcoat from Scott Bader to remove the risk of diluting the properties of the gelcoat with
® ®
excess pigment addition. Generally, we recommend addition of 8-10 % Crystic Polyester Pigment in Crystic polyester gelcoats and addition of
®
4-5 % in in Crystic polyester resins.
®
Crystic Polyester Pigment Pastes should be thoroughly dispersed in the gelcoat or resin before the addition of the catalyst. This can be done
by stirring well by hand or with a low shear mixer to avoid aeration. When mixing by hand, we recommend that the pigment paste is dispersed
in a small quantity of gelcoat or resin before being added to the bulk.

For critical applications, pre-pigmented gelcoats or resins should be used wherever possible.

Weathering
® ®
We do extensive weathering testing in both natural and accelerated environments for Crystic Polyester Pigment Pastes in Crystic gelcoats.
For natural weathering, samples are sent to Florida for 12 months and for accelerated weathering we run the samples in both Xenon Arc
machines and QUVA machines.

Colour Reproducibility
®
Crystic Polyester Pigment Pastes are subject to strict quality control tests during manufacture. However, good colour reproducibility can be
achieved only by the customer taking extreme care in weighing the pigment pastes and other additives e.g. catalyst. As with other coloured
materials, it is recommended that the same batch is used throughout the process for a consistent colour on all parts.

Packaging and Storage

®
Crystic Polyester Pigment Pastes are available in 1Kg, 5Kg and 25kg containers.
®
Crystic Polyester Pigment Paste should be stored in its original container, under cover, and out of direct sunlight. These must be kept closed
and airtight. It is recommended that the storage temperature should be less than 25°C and the product should not be frozen. Storing the
product outside of these conditions may affect the properties of the product and reduce its shelf life. Ideally, containers should be opened
only immediately prior to use. The contents of containers should be stirred thoroughly before use. Material should be used within 12 months
from date of production.
