"Steering Cylinder" position sensor
When one of the "steering cylinder" position sensors on the machine has been replaced, two setup parameters must be changed in
order for the Implement ECM to correctly control the cylinder operation.

This procedure is to be performed when a "steering cylinder" position sensor is replaced in a hydraulic steering cylinder that has
previously been in operation on the machine.

When the complete hydraulic "steering cylinder" group is replaced, refer to the Testing and Adjusting, RENR9013, "New Steering
Cylinder Group (Set)" for the setup procedure.

For removal and replacement of the position sensor from the hydraulic "steering cylinder", refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
RENR9704, "Clevis Style Cylinder Sensor - Remove and Install".

Note: This procedure will require the use of the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool.

MANUAL INSTALLATION OF STEERING CYLINDER POSITION SENSOR SETUP PARAMETERS

Illustration 2 g01283732

The disconnect switch and the key start switch are in the OFF position. Cat ET is connected to the machine service connector.

1. After the new position sensor has been installed in the steering cylinder, fasten the cylinder to the machine at the cylinder head
end only. Do not attach the rod end of the cylinder to the machine. Allow enough space for full extension of the cylinder rod.

2. Connect the correct connector of the machine wiring harness to the connector of the new position sensor for the steering cylinder.

3. Connect a portable hydraulic pump, a hand hydraulic pump, compressed air or a similar device to the hydraulic connectors of the
cylinder that will enable manual retraction and extension of the cylinder.

4. Fully retract the cylinder rod to the mechanical stop of the cylinder.
5. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

6. In the Cat ET Status screen for the Implement ECM, look under the "Joystick Steering 2" group. With the cylinder rod at full
retraction, record the duration of the pulse of the "steering cylinder" position sensor that is listed for the position sensor that was
replaced. Example: (Left/ Right) Steering Cylinder Position Sensor Pulse Duration.

7. Use the portable device that is connected to the cylinder to manually move the cylinder rod to full extension to the mechanical stop
of the cylinder.

8. In the Cat ET Status screen for the Implement ECM, look under the "Joystick Steering 2" group. With the cylinder rod at full
extension, record the duration of the pulse of the "steering cylinder" position sensor of the "(Left/ Right) Steering Sensor Cylinder
Position Sensor Pulse Duration".

Cat ET - Implement Configuration\Steering Parameters screen
9. The two new values that were recorded for the cylinder rod retraction and extension must now be entered using Cat ET. Follow the
steps:

a. In Cat ET, select the "Implement Configuration Tool", then select "Steering Parameters".

b. Select the parameter that needs to be changed. Example: If the left hand position sensor has been replaced, one at a time
select and change "Left Steering Cylinder Position Sensor Maximum Pulse Duration" to the measurement while extended
and "Left Steering Cylinder Position Sensor Minimum Pulse Duration" to the measurement while retracted. If the right hand
position sensor has been replaced, one at a time select and change "Right Steering Cylinder Position Sensor Maximum
Pulse Duration" to the measurement while extended and "Right Steering Cylinder Position Sensor Minimum Pulse Duration"
to the measurement while retracted.

c. After the parameter is selected, click on the "Change" button. A "Change Parameter Value" box will appear with the name of
the selected parameter, the current value for the parameter and a space for entering the new value.

d. Enter the appropriate value of the new pulse duration that was recorded, then click the "OK" button. Click "Yes" when
prompted. Repeat this process for the other value that needs to be changed.

e. After both values have been changed, verify that the correct new values are listed for the correct parameter.

10. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

11. After the new parameters have been entered and the parameters have been verified, connect the rod end of the hydraulic steering
cylinder to the machine. Verify that the head end is mounted securely.

12. Remove the portable device that was used to manually move the cylinder rod and connect the hydraulic hose connectors to the
correct connectors of the cylinder. Verify that the connectors of the machine wiring harness are securely connected to the
connector for the position sensor.

13. The procedure is now complete. Start the engine and enable the steering system. Verify that the steering system for the joystick is
working properly before moving and operating the machine.
