SOLUTION

Question No.1: Marks: 5

Find the domain of the function:

𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦) = ln (9 – 𝑥2 − 𝑦2)

Solution No. 1

Given that: = ln (9 – 𝑥2 − 𝑦2)

9 – 𝑥2 − 𝑦2 > 0

– 𝑥2 − 𝑦2 > -9

𝑥2 + 𝑦2 < 9

This represents the set of point (x, y) that lie inside the circle centered at the origin with radius √9=3.

So, the domain of the function is all the points within this circle.

As,

D= {(x, y) ϵ R2: x2 + y2 < 9}

Question No.2: Marks:5

Find the distance between 𝐴 = (2,3,5) and 𝐵 = (3,4,6).

Solution No.2

Given that:

𝐴 = (2,3,5)

𝐵 = (3,4,6)

By using distance formula:

d= √ (x2 – x1)2 + (y2 – y1)2 + (z2 – z1)2

Now, by putting values of A and B in this formula.

We get,

d= √ (3-2)2 + (4-3)2 + (6-5)2

d= √ (1)2 + (1)2 + (1)2

d= √ 1+1+1

d= √ 3

So, the distance between A and B is √3.

Question No. 3: Marks: 5

Clairaut’s Theorem state that if 𝑓𝑥𝑦 and 𝑓𝑦𝑥 are defined and continuous in a region then 𝑓𝑥𝑦 = 𝑓𝑦𝑥. Verify
the Clairaut’s Theorem for the function:

f (x, y) = x2 + y2 + 2xy.
Solution No. 3

Given that:

f (x, y) = x2 + y2 + 2xy

Compute fx:

fx = ∂f/∂x = 2x + 2y

fy = ∂f/∂y = 2y + 2x

Compute fxy:

fxy= ∂2f/∂y∂x = 2

Compute fyx:

fyx = ∂2f/∂x∂y = 2

Since, fxy = fyx = 2

So, Clairaut’s theorem is verified for the given function

f (x, y) = x2 + y2 + 2xy
