This year is the first year that mentors have reported their mentees having a strong interest in college or post high school plans. So, being the child relations chair, I decided it would be such a great idea to invite some of the older kids to come do a college tour of UGA. Spencer, the director of events, works at the visitiors center and got us the hook up! We had 5 boys and their mentors come last Saturday, and we did the full blown, welcome to college experience. We started off in the general info session with all of the other people who came to tour the campus. HERO exec wasnt present in the session, but all of the mentors told us that Jaylon asked very quisitive questions. Jaylon is 18 and we found out last week that he applied to UGA. This is HERO history! Not many kids even think about going to college much less UGA. After the information session, we had lunch outside at ECV. We all tried to spread out and sit with the kids to get to know them better. I talked to Danquel but this was his first college experience because he is only a freshman. We did talk about how helpful this event will be because he knows what he needs to do now if he wants to go to a big school like UGA. We went upstairs to the dining

hall after and they were all floored that it was all you can eat. We got our own bus for the campus tour and our guides name Kimhow perfect she was! We rode around from the Vistiors Center and then got off for the walking tour at the arch. Spencer lead the tour from there, many stops in between arch and SLC for history lessons. Highlight of the tour for me was definitely the Chapel Bell! Spencer told the boys that if anyone could take the bells rope out of your hand got automatic entrance in UGA. Jaylons face lit up when he gave that challenge. So neat to see how he had developed almost a passion about getting accepted. I got chills when he rang the chapel bell numerous times!! Overall we can definitely say it was an unforgettable experience for us and the kids. It was great seeing how they interacted with the mentors and were so eager to learn more about college. This is how we know what we do is working. Use this as an inspiration this month to meet your goal! Without fundraising, none of this would be possible. Without you, we couldnt fundraise. HERO love, Amanda Detraz

Zeimet joined UGA HEROs in September 2009 as a philanthropist and then furthered her involvement in January 2011 when she was chosen to serve on the Special Events Committee after going through a competitive application and interview process. She said she joined HERO because I love being a part of something that is so important for our HERO children. These children deserve an amazing childhood just like any other kid, and I feel blessed to be a part of it.
