Resource Person: Mrs. Sreedevi Aravind Worksheet No: 2
Reference: Core Chemistry, Together with Subject: Chemistry
Pages: 14 – 26 (NCERT Text Book) Topic: Is Matter Around Us Pure?

Name of the Student: _________________________________ Roll No.: ______

Class & Division: IX______________ Date: __________

I. Choose the correct answers:

4. 1. Which of the following is an example of a true solution?

a) Blood b) Starch solution c) Glucose solution d) Milk

2 . If the amount of solute contained in a solution is less than the saturation level, it is called:
(a) solution (b) saturated solution (c) unsaturated solution (d) suspension

3. Which of the following will show “Tyndall effect”?

(i) Salt solution (ii) milk (iii) copper sulphate solution (iv) starch solution
a) (i) and (ii) b) (i) and (iii) c) (ii) and (iii) d) (ii) and (iv)

4. A student crushed a piece of chalk and mixed the chalk powder in 100 mL water. The water appeared
white and cloudy. After some time the particles settled at the bottom of the container. She claims that
the mixture is a suspension. What justifies her claim?
a) The particles mix completely with water.
b) The particles of chalk float on the surface of water.
c) The particles of chalk are visible through the naked eye.
d) The particles of chalk are uniformly distributed in water.

5. Which of the following is not a homogeneous mixture?

(a) Air (b) Tincture of iodine (c) Sugar solution (d) milk

II. Answer the following questions:

1. Identify the solute and solvent in the following:
(i) Tincture of iodine (ii) soda water
2. Differentiate between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.
3. Define (i) solute (ii) solvent (iii) solution.
4. What is the difference between an aqueous solution and a non-aqueous solution? Give one example for
each.

5. How much water should be added to 15 g of salt to obtain 15% salt solution?

6. If 50 g of salt is present in 200 g of solution, calculate the concentration in terms of mass by mass
percentage of the solution.

7. Calculate the amount of glucose required to prepare 250 g of 5% solution of glucose by mass.

8. Differentiate between an element and a compound, with one example each.

9. i) On the basis of stability, filterability and size of particles distinguish between a solution, colloid and
suspension in a tabular form.
ii) What is Tyndall effect? Mention two possible situations where you may observe this effect.

10. Write the differences between mixtures and compounds.

III. Assertion Reason type questions:

The following questions consist of two statements – Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Answer these questions
selecting the appropriate option given below:

(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.

1. Assertion (A): A solution of table salt in a glass of water is homogeneous.

Reason (R): A solution having different composition throughout is homogeneous.

2. Assertion (A): When a beam of light is passed through a colloidal solution placed in a dark place the
path of the beam becomes visible.
Reason (R): Light gets scattered by the colloidal particles.

IV. Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow based on the passage.

A solution which can dissolve more of the solute at a given temperature is called unsaturated solution.
However, a solution which cannot dissolve any more of the solute is called saturated solution. The amount of
solute that can dissolve in 100 g of the solvent at a given temperature is called solubility of the substance.
Different substances have different solubilities at the same temperature.
(a) A 30 % solution of X at 298 K is marked as saturated solution of X. What is the solubility of X at 298 K?
(b) How does solubility of a solid in water change with temperature?
(c) You are given a saturated sugar solution in water. Mention two ways by which you can make it
unsaturated.
