PURPOSE:
The apparatus is designed for determining the
penetration time of oil or other liquid through paper and
some other at materials.

APPARATUS:
A WILLIAMS’s standard tilting type penetration testing
apparatus consist of a chamber with Orice 6.03 cm
diameter for holding the liquid medium (castor oil which
has a viscosity of approximately 700 ± 30 centipedes at

PROCEDURE: time in seconds.
The penetrometer shall be lled with standard castor oil to a depth of 3 ± 0.1 mm below the level of
the orice when the penetrometer is in the horizontal position. The orice shall be close with a
polyester sheet and the castor oil is brought to a temperature of 350C by the digital temperature
indicating cum controller.

A rectangular specimen of the sample of paper to be tested shall be cut 24 x 10 cm in size, so that
two tests can be carried out conveniently side-by-side on the same specimen. On one half the test
shall be carried out “wire” side and the other half the paper shall be reversed and test carried out
“face” side down.

The clamp of the orice of the penetrometer shall be opened, checked the oil temperature and
excess oil wiped off the edge of the orice and clamp area. The orice shall be close with a paper
sheet & clamp. Tilted the oil container by removing the catch, the oil gets contact with the paper
and digital timer stars automatically. When oil penetrates through paper 99% area, lift up the oil
container horizontally by hand, and then digital timer stops automatically and notes the time of
penetration.

Then repeat the test on the other half of the test specimen after reversal of the paper from the “wire”
to the “face” side down as same and note the time of penetration of oil from the paper and takes
the average of the two timing seconds.

Record the clasped time as the time of oil penetration in seconds.

CARE OF THE INSTRUMENT:-

The instrument should be kept clean at all times, free from stock accumulations, pitch, oil or grease.
Oven should be switch off when not require.
