- Đứng trước danh từ đếm được số ít và chưa được xác định
- Chỉ nghề nghiệp, chức vụ (lawyer, doctor…)
Ex: My mom is a teacher.
(Mẹ tôi là 1 người giáo viên.)
- Chỉ khối lượng, số lượng
Ex: a lot of, a piece of, an hour, a kilo, a hundred…
NOTE: A dùng với danh từ bắt đầu bằng phụ âm
An dùng với danh từ bắt đầu bằng nguyên âm (u,e,o,a,i), đặc biệt là âm “h” câm
(hour,…)

- Đứng trước tất cả các loại danh từ (số ít, số nhiều, không đếm được)
- Người, vật đã được nhắc đến trước đó
Ex: This is my pencil. The pencil is blue.
(Đây là bút chì của tớ. Cái bút có màu xanh dương)
Did you lock the car? (the car đã được xác định là xe của họ vì chia theo thì
quá khứ đơn, the car=our car)
(Anh đã khoá xe ô tô chưa?)
- Chỉ nơi chốn
Ex: Turn left here for the petrol station.
(Rẽ trái ở đây để đến trạm xăng.)
But: The bus stops at a station.
(Xe buýt dừng ở một bến.) -không nói cụ thể là bến nào nên dùng “a”
 - Chỉ những vật là duy nhất và môi trường xung quanh
Ex: the sun, the moon, the Chinese, the stars, the earth, the world, the capital…
