Jolly Phonics

Kids 2

October 2023

*** The books mentioned and sound cards can all be found in the Staff
Room conveniently placed on the Jolly Phonics shelf.

❖ Session 1

Read and See Pack 1: First Words & Who’s in the box?

Game: Roll and Read.

Students roll a die and read ONE word from the corresponding column.
Let students color in the words as they read them (every student must
choose one colour, different from each other). Example:

❖ Session 2

Read and See Pack 1: I can & ck words.

Game: Hop and Sound

Draw circles or place a hula hoop depending

on the number of letters in the word that you
intend to use (the ones just seen in the books).
You’ll need letter cards to put in the middle of
the hula hoop.

Students simply stretch out and say the word.

Let them identify all the sounds in the word as they hop into each
hoop/circle and say the corresponding sound. Then, they hop out and say
the word.

Words: sit, run, hop, skip, clap, jump, stand, stamp, sack, neck, sock, stick,
black, clock, brick, rocket.
❖ Session 3

Read and See Pack 1: double trouble

Tricky Words 1 (staff room)

Game: Where’s the fly?

Place the tricky words and word cards (attached) all over the kids’ desks.
Give them a flyswatter each (or have them play in turns). Have them go
round and round. They must find and hit the word you (or another student)
call out.

❖ Session 4

Read and See Pack 2: ai words

Alternative Spelling: ai, ay, a-e (worksheet attached)

***Do not start directly with the alternative spelling worksheet but
somehow link the reading of the book with the three different spellings
we’re going to work on. Explain, insist and draw your students’ attention to
the three groups before working on the photocopy.

Game: Hit and Say

Write the words from the session all over the whiteboard (students can
suggest the words to be written). Students stand opposite the board,
keeping some distance. They must hit a word with a soft toy and say it out
loud.
