Tutorial 9: Lens Maker Equation

1. (a) State the lens maker equation. Clearly explain all the symbols
used.
(b) A convex lens made of glass with refractive index of 1.50 has a
focal length, f = 20 cm in the air. Calculate the focal length of the
lens when placed inside water with refractive index of 1.33 ?
[ f = 78.25 cm ]
2. By using lens maker equation, find the focal length of the following lens :

R1 = 20cm
R1 = 10cm R2 = 20cm

R1= 20 cm

R2=50cm

3. A glass fixture (n=1.50) has an empty space like a double convex lens.
Given that the radius of curvature for each side is 10 cm. If this space is
filled with water (n= 1.33), calculate the focal length of the double convex
lens formed. [ f = - 44.12 cm ]

4. A convex lens of focal length 24 cm ( n= 1.50) is totally immersed in water

(n= 1.33). Find the focal length of the lens in water. [ f= 93.88 cm ]
