Grinch Hair Scrunchie

Finished Size
• About 6” tall and 4” wide

Materials
• Worsted weight (#4) yarn in RED, • Scissors
GREEN, YELLOW and WHITE • Small amount of fiber fill
• 3.5mm hook • 3 pipe cleaners
• Needle • Hair elastic

Gauge
• Not necessary but your finished size may vary

Stitches (US Terms)


• Sl st -Slip stitch • Dec -Decrease
• Sk -Skip • FLO -Front loop only
• St -Stitch • BLO -Back loop only
• Ch -Chain • Dc -Double crochet
• Sc -Single crochet
• Inc -Increase

Pattern Notes
• The Hand is worked first -in 3 parts- then the Cuff and Arm being worked next,
followed by the Ornament, and finally the Scrunchie.
• “# sc’ means one sc in each stitch for # stitches.

Thumb / Pointer Finger (Make 2)
With GREEN
Round 1: In a magic ring, 4 sc (4)
2 – 6 (5 rounds): sc in each st around
Fasten off

Hand (& other ‘fingers’)


With GREEN
Round 1: Ch 5, in 2nd ch from hook, sc, 2 sc, (3sc) in last ch, now working on opposite
side of ch’s, 2 sc, (2sc) in last ch (10)
2 – 4 (3 rounds): sc in each st around
5: Hold up a Thumb / Pointer Finger piece, sc in each st of Thumb / Pointer Finger
piece, sc in each st of Hand (14)
6: sc in each st around
7: 12 sc, hold up remaining Thumb / Pointer Finger piece, going from INSIDE the piece
and through both layers of Thumb / Pointer Finger AND Hand, 2 sc (leaving 2 sts on
Thumb / Pointer Finger unworked) -See photo below- (14)

Going from INSIDE the Thumb / Pointer Crochet through BOTH layers of
Finger piece the two pieces

8: 12 sc, now instead of working into the last 2 sc’s on the Hand round, work the 2 sc
into the remaining stitches of the Thumb / Pointer Finger (skipping the remaining
stitches on the hand) (14)
9 – 11 (3 rounds): sc in each st around

12: 9 sc, *dec* 3 times (12)
13: *2 sc, dec* 3 times (9)
Fasten off green, leaving long tail. Pull tail to front of work.
Very LIGHTLY stuff hand

Arm Cuff
With WHITE
Continue working on Hand piece
Round 14: In FLO *sl st in next st, ch 5, sl st in same st* 9 times, sl st to join, fasten off

Arm
With RED
Continue working on Hand piece
Round 15: In the remaining BLO of R13, sc in each st (9)
16 – 23 (8 rounds) sc in each st around, fasten off
Do NOT stuff arm

Assembly
Using a fine-tooth comb, brush out the green yarn at the hand to make it fuzzy.

Bend the Hand and use the remaining green tail to sew Round 3 of both pieces of the
Thumb / Pointer Finger together (to make them ‘pinch’), hide end.

Twist 3 pipe cleaners together, then fold them in half, and insert them into the Hand /
Arm. Bend once at the back of the Hand and once at the wrist to get the correct shape.

Ornament
Leaving 5-inch tail
With YELLOW
Round 1: In a magic ring, 6 sc (6)
2: sc in each st around
3: In FLO, sl st in each st, fasten off yellow
With RED
4: Attach to the remaining back loops of R3, *inc* 6 times (12)
5 – 6 (2 rounds): sc in each st around
7: *dec* 6 times (6), fasten off, leaving tail for cinching hole closed
Lightly stuff, use red tail to cinch hole closed
Take your long yellow starting tail, and attach between the two Thumb / Pointer Finger
pieces, to make the ornament dangle.

Scrunchie
Working around an hair elastic for Round 1
With RED
Round 1: Attach red, ch 1, 36 sc, sl st to join, ch 3 (does not count as stitch)
2: *(3dc) in same st* 16 times, flatten arm and hold up to scrunchie, and working
through both layers of Arm and Round 1 of scrunchie, 4 sc, *(3dc) in same st* 16 times,
sl st to join, fasten off red
With WHITE
3: Attach white, ch 1, *sc, ch 3, sk 2 sts* around, (you will need to sk an extra st at the
last repeat), fasten off, weave in ends.
