 OBITUARY
Clarice Stahl
Clarice Ann Stahl, age 93, was
welcomed into Heaven in the early
morning sunrise on Friday, June 21,
2024. Clarice was born April 27, 1931
to Floyd and Ellen (Beck) Bradshaw
in Culbertson, Montana. She attended
various schools, mostly in Grantsdale
and Hamilton, MT, and graduating from
Glasgow High School in 1949. She met
her future husband, Carl L. Stahl while
her family was living in Hamilton. Carl
and Clarice married January 11, 1949. Three children
were born to this union: Kenneth Lee, 1950, Wayne
Carlyle, 1952 and Susan Ann, 1957. In the fall of 1956,
Carl and Clarice purchased the Lund place north of
Hinsdale and moved there the following summer. The
family moved to the Hetrick farm in Saco in 1962, later
purchasing it. This was home until Carl and Clarice
passed away.
Clarice was always busy as she found it difficult to sit
still for very long. She crocheted many doilies, tablecloths,
and ornaments, selling them at craft bazaars or gifting them
to her family and friends, all the while working side by side
with Carl on the farm. She began refinishing furniture and
spent many years teaching Adult Education classes through
the Saco School and for her friends and family. Clarice spent
many hours helping neighbor ladies with housecleaning,
gardening, driving to doctor appointments and helping
however she could. She was always available to help her
children and grandchildren whenever she could as they
were her top priority.
Clarice was preceded in death by
her parents, Floyd and Ellen Bradshaw;
her husband, Carl Stahl; brothers, Baby
Bradshaw and Sonny Bradshaw; sisters,
Lois Wetzsteon and Vivian Parr; brothers-
in-law, Jerry Patzer, Stanley Parr, William
Wetzsteon, Harvey Berg, Daryl Stahl,
Irvin Stahl, and Will Stahl; sisters-in-law,
Betty Stahl, Jean Stahl, and Lois Johnson;
two nieces, Cindy Patzer and Kathy Stahl,
one grandson Ryan Olsen; and one great
grandson Terryn Moore.
She is survived by her children Ken (Gayle) Stahl,
Wayne Stahl, and Sue (Allie) Olsen; sisters Alice Bradshaw
and Cheryl Patzer; grandchildren Konrich (Cheri)
Fuhrman, David (Ursula) Floren, Derrick (Tiffany)
Floren, Mandy Moore, Natalie Cole, Joshua Stahl,
Jennifer (Matt) Blaskowski, Brittany Bonner and Carli
(Guy) Simanton, great grandchildren Lucas (Stephanie)
Fuhrman, Gage Fuhrman, Thyus Olsen, Tatum Moore,
Dyllan and Cheyenne Stahl, Traxton and Gray Simanton;
great-great grandchildren Konrich Fuhrman, Katana and
Kenzo Strong, many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024 from
5-6pm at Wilderness Funeral Homes Malta. Funeral service
will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 2pm at the Saco
Lutheran Church. Burial will be at the Saco Grandview
Cemetery following the service. All are welcome to join the
family at the reception at the Saco IOOF Hall.
Memorials will be gifted to the Saco Community
Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Wilderness
Funeral Home Malta.

Hinsdale, home of the Raiders

Hinsdale is another town that sits near the railroad
tracks with US Highway 2 running through the town.
Montana Highway 537 runs north of Hinsdale and South
Bench Road crosses the railroad tracks, running south
of the town. Like most of the hi-line towns, Hinsdale is a
farming and ranching community.
Hinsdale, a station on the Great Northern Railway as
early as 1889, is names for a Reverend Hinsdale, a friend of
James J. Hill, the builder of the Great Northern Railroad.
The town got its first post office in 1891. Residents
moved the town about one and a half mile west in 1898,
after flooding on the Milk River inundated the settlement.
The old site was owned by Bob Walsh, aka “Six-shooter
Bob.” The present site was owned by William Woolridge,
who was the depot agent in 1897.
At the turn of the 20th century, sheep ranching
dominated the local economy, but after the Milk River
Irrigation Project brought water to the area, sugar beets
became a major crop. True farmers brought Japanese in to
work the sugar beets. It was cheaper labor.
Hinsdale’s nickname is “The Best Little Town in the
Milk River Valley.”
North of this river town, you will see beautiful
badlands. Rock Creek Road, about three miles east of
Hinsdale, heads north to Canada and leads into this
region. About 18 miles up the road you will be skirting the
western edge of a true prairie wilderness, the Bitter Creek
Wilderness Study Area. The terrain you will be driving is
cowboy county.
There are smaller communities and ghost towns
left over from the Homestead Period that fall under the
Hinsdale community: Barr, Beaverton, Genevieve, Happy
Flats, Miles Crossing, Tampico, Vandalia, and Theony.
Native American tribes lived in the area thousands of
years before European colonization. This brought horses
which greatly improved life on the prairie. The steady
eastward march of settlers pushed new tribes into the area.
The Corps of Discovery — the Lewis and Clark
Expedition — reached the head of the Milk River in May
of 1805. There, the river got its name “the water of this river
possesses a peculiar whiteness, being about the color of a
cup of tea with the admixture of a tablespoonful of milk.
Southeast of Hinsdale is a buffalo jump that was used
by the Assiniboine and Sioux tribes.
The next major event was the arrival of Texas cattle
coming to fatten up on the local grass after their long cattle
drives. The drives lasted from 1866 to the late 1880s.
The Act of May 1, 1888 ceded a large arena of land,
including Hinsdale, from the tribes. This opened up the
area for homesteading. The first schoolhouse was built by
Jamez Deegan and Los Blackmon near the old Deegan
ranch. The schoolhouse, a log building, was located on the
current school grounds.
Hinsdale had two newspapers, The Montana
Homestead ran from 1904-1912. The better known
Hinsdale Tribune ran from 1912-1971. This paper merged
with the Saco Independent to form the Independent
Tribune in the 1970s.
Hinsdale did experience a few dust storms during
the Great Depression. Times were rough and most of
the settlers who toughed it out and stayed lived mostly
on subsistence farming. During the 190s the community
of Hinsdale suffered greatly as the period saw one of the
worst droughts in the area’s history.
Hinsdale has numerous businesses that thrive from
local trade. Sweet Memories, Stoughies Bad and Grill,
Klind Pottery, Raiders Quick Stop, just to name a few. The
town still has a bank so the farmers and ranchers don’t
have to drive to Glasgow for their banking.
In July, Hinsdale Celebrates the Milk River Days and
Cowboys Rodeo. The weekend has street dances, beef
BBQ and free fireworks at dusk. If you have never been
to this event you need to go. They know how to put on a
good feed and rodeo.
