According to a survey on consumer expectations during the fourth quarter of 2023,more than 50
percent of the surveyed households in the Philippines took out loans to purchase basic goods.
Meanwhile, about 27 percent of respondents applied for loans to start or expand their businesses.

1. Why do you suppose the purchase of basic goods has the highest rate of household loans? Who
do you suppose are the respondents for this survey?

I think basic goods are the highest because the people responding to this survey are normal people
and they all need basic necessities to live and their loans are for basic needs.

2. How do you describe the possible reasons why business start-up or business expansion comes
second? How do you describe the possible demographics of these respondents from those in #1.
Can they be the same people? Why or why not?

People need funds to start a business, and without a loan they can't start one with what they
currently have and need help to get started. I think the demographic of the respondents is different
since people that need a loan for basic needs are in a lower demographic group if they cannot afford
basic needs.

3. Which of the loan purposes strike you as a surprising result? Why?

I think real estate being as low as it is surprises me since there has been an increase of people
investing in real estate I expected more people to take loans for real estate.
