SS5 HP SEPARATOR weld repair on Shell (LSW2)

1. DEFECT GRINDING
A) The cracked old weldment should be removed from one side 12 - 16 mm depth from the base metal
surface to the weld root face, leaving approximately 40% of the old weld on the other side (Figure 1).
Grinding shall be used to accomplish this.

Figure 1: Cracked weldment

CAUTION: Light grinding practices should be employed so as not to introduce any grinding cracks onto the
bevel face of the weld preparation. Welding inspector should check on the ground surface for any
discoloration due to grinding and shall have discolored surfaces re-ground lightly.

B) Conduct Liquid Penetrant Tests on the weld joint preparation (Photo 1). All bevel faces shall be free from
cracks and any welding defects. Any indications fround other than grinding marks, shall be re-ground and
retested. Welding Inspector shall make sure that all groove dimensions are acceptable prior to welding.

2. WELDING

A.) Welding shall be carried out using an approved WPS. An electrode for deep penetration shall be used for
the root passes to melt through the old weld. Welding Inspector shall make sure that the intepass
temperature shall not exceed 600°F (315 °C) during welding.

B.) Only a qualified welder shall carry out welding for the repair joint

C.) A certified wleding inspector shall be present during the entire duration of the welding repair.

3. POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT

A.) Install heating elements at the location of the repaired area.

B.) The temperature should be checked to assure that at least 4 in. (100 mm) of the mateial on each side of the
groove.

C.) Set the parameters in reference to ASME Section VIII table UCS 56-1.

4. INSPECTION

A.) The finished weld shall be subjected to Radiographic Tests (RT) and Liquid Penetrant Tests (PT) / Magnetic
Particle Tests; and shall be free from any linear and rounded indications. All test results shall be coordinated
and submitted to QA Group the soonest that it is available

B.) Hardness Readings from the weld metal, HAZ, and adjacent parent metal shall be taken and submitted to QA
Group

C.) Final RESULTS shall be evaluated and accepted by QA Supervisor.
