This General method statement provides the contractors with safe working procedure
for Topographical & Photographical survey. It outlines the activities to be performed, and
controls required for the completion of works.
The purpose of Topographic survey to this Project is to gather survey data about the
natural and man-made features along the cable route and its surroundings of the land,
as well as its elevations. From this information a shop drawing will be prepared
incorporating all the field data. The work usually consists of the following;
1. Establishing horizontal and vertical control that will serve as the framework of the
survey by the GPS.
2. Determining enough horizontal location and elevation of ground points to provide
enough data for plotting when the drawings are prepared
3. Locating natural and man-made features that may be required by the purpose of
the survey
4. Computing distances, angles, and elevations
5. Photographing by shooting digital camera

SECTION 6.1 :
This General method statement covers the general procedure for Topographical survey,
covers the following works:
6.2. GENERAL:
Existing permanent bench marks coordinates shall be taken from Survey Directorate and
submitted for approval. Protection of the approved Survey Directorate benchmarks on or
adjacent to the site prior to commence of the works, shall be with three no. 75mm diameter

steel hollow section pipe 1200mm long, driven 600mm deep into the ground. Pipe shall be
equidistant from each other and 600mm radius from the marker. Based on the approval the
survey shall commence.
Temporary Bench Marks (TBM) will be installed and verified with Engineers representative
for accuracy before preceding the Topographic survey. The TBM’s will be installed on the
stable area, easily identified and reachable. All necessary precautions will be taken to
avoid damage to any of these PBM’s, TBM’s adjacent to the site. Shape and size of
TBM’s are planned to have dimensions of 30 cm x 30 cm x 45 cm for Temporary Bench
Mark. The stations and benchmarks will be clearly marked with item number, elevation and
/ or coordinate in shop drawing.
GPS
GPS surveying instruments offer measurements in 3D (X, Y, and Z planes) that make it easy
for the surveyor to take precise measurements for any point of the area. The GPS surveying
instruments receive signals from GPS satellites in terms of longitude, latitude, and elevation
(from sea level) along with some other information that helps the GPS surveying instrument
display exact measurements. With the GPS surveying instrument in hand, the surveyor will
take precise measurements without the requirement of line of sight. These devices will work
under any weather conditions. Thus, the process of surveying became fast, more precise.
Accuracy is dependent upon various factors including the number of satellites tracked,
constellation geometry, observation time, ephemeris accuracy, ionospheric disturbance,
multipath and resolved ambiguities.

The following accuracies, given as root mean square, are based on measurements
processed using LGO and on real-time measurements. The use of multiple GNSS systems
can increase accuracy by up to 30% relative to GPS only.
Differential code:
The baseline precision of a differential code solution for static and kinematic surveys
is 25 cm. The measurement of accuracy is complaint with ISO 17123-8.

Survey Report
The following items will be included in the topographic survey report and in the shop drawing
Location and elevation of bench mark within the limits of the survey.
Spot elevations at any abrupt changes.
Location, width and elevation at both ends of all existing sidewalks. Include a
description of the kind and general condition of the sidewalk.
Location of trees with in the cable route and
Electric utilities – the location of power poles, route markers, etc.,
Storm, and sewer lines – the location of all observable manholes and other structures
such as outfalls, headwalls. Include elevations of the top of manholes and head
walls.
Existing location of manholes, route markers, etc.; that are visible on the section.
Gas – the existing location of all manholes and gas line markers that are visible on
the parcel. Show elevation on top of any manholes.
Telephone – the existing location of cables, manholes, boxes, etc. that are visible on
the parcel.
