SEMEN

ANALYSIS
Semen analysis, also known as a sperm count test, analyzes the
health and viability of a man’s sperm. Semen is the fluid containing
sperm that’s released during ejaculation.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT

01– PREPARATION
May be instructed to abstain from ejaculation in a given time period of
48 to 72 hours to obtain accurate sperm concentrations. As well as
avoiding alcohol, caffeine, drugs, and any hormone medications as
instructed by the healthcare provide.

02– COLLECTING THE SEMEN SAMPLE

Usually performed in a laboratory, the patient will be asked to to
masturbate in a sterile cup provided by the laboratory in a private room.
The patient should use no oil, lubricant, or even saliva during the
ejaculation as it affects the accuracy of the test results. When semen
sample is collected at home, must be kept at room temperature and
delivered to the laboratory within 1 hour.

03– MACROSCOPIC EXAMINATION

Depending on the factors to be analyzed, the lab will hand in the
semen analysis results within 24 to 72 hours. Once the sample
reaches the lab, it is either manually tested under a microscope or a
computer-assisted semen analysis may be conducted.

SEVERAL FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN A SPERM

ANALYSIS, INCLUDING:
Sperm concentration (Number of sperm per millimeter of semen)
Motility (Ability of the sperm to swim toward an egg)
Morphology (Size and shape of the sperm)
pH level (The acidity in your semen
Volume (Amount of semen in the sample, in millimeters)
Liquefaction (How quickly semen changes from a sticky
substance to a liquid
Vitality (Percent of live sperm in the sample)
White Blood Cells (A sign of infection or inflammation)
Appearance (Semen usually is white or grey)

04– SEMEN ANALYSIS TEST RESULTS

Sperm analysis test results takes into account the factors to consider,
including concentration, motility, morphology, volume, liquefaction, pH
levels, appearance, vitality, and presence of white blood cells. Results
that lie outside the laboratory reference ranges are considered to be
abnormal.

NORMAL RANGES FOR A

SEMEN ANALYSIS
Volume: Greater than 1.5 milliliters (mL)
pH, or acidity: 7.2 to 7.8
Sperm concentration: 39 million sperm per ejaculate or more)
Motility: Greater than 32% actively moving
Morphology: Greater than 4% normally shaped
