So Underdrain
So Underdrain
NAME:SONIA CHUWA Z
TYPES OF UNDERDRAINS
There are five types of underdrains,these are;
Gravity underdrains:This is one among the types of underdrains that uses the force of gravity to
remove water from the filter media.
Pressure underdrains:This is the type of underdrain that uses pressure to remove water from the filter
media.
Lateral underdrains:This is the type of underdrain that consist of a nertwork of perforated pipes or
tubes that distribute water evenly across the filter media
Radial underdrain:This is the type of underdrain that consist of a central hub with multiple arms that
distribute water radially across the filter media.
Vacuum underdrain:This is the type of underdrain that uses a vacuum to remove water from tha filter
media.
STEPS FOR CONTRUCTION OF UNDERDRAINS
The following are the steps involved in construction of under-drains;
Exacavation:This is the first steps in constructing an under-drain ,it involves excavating a trench or a
series of trenchs whwre the underdrains pipes will be installed.The depth and width of the trench will
depends on specific design requirenments and site conditions
Installation of pipes:Perforated or slotted pipes typically made of PVC or corrugated plastic are then
laid in the trench to form the underdrain system.These types allow water to enter to enter and flow
through them ,directicting it away from the areas where it could cause problems
Filter material:Once the pipes are in place,a layer of filter material such as gravel isplaced around and on
top of pipes. These materials helps to prevent soil particlesn from clogging the pipes while allowing water
to pass through.
Backfilling :The trench is then backfilled with additional gravel or other suitable materials tocover the
pipes and filter materials ,this helps to provide support for the pipes and ensure that they remain in place.
Outlet structure:An outlet such as a catch basin or a drainage pipe is installed at the end of underdrain
system to collect and re-direct water away from the area.
