WIND ORIENTATION

- A monsoon is weather pattern that dictates the change in direction of the prevailing winds of a
region. Monsoons are often associated with the Indian Ocean that causes two seasons to
tropical regions: wet and dry season. Additionally, it always blows from cold to warm regions,
making it a factor in determining the climate in the regions of India and Southeast Asia.
- In the Philippines, we classify these two prevailing winds as Amihan (Northeast monsoon and
Habagat (Southwest monsoon).
- The Amihan brings cool and dry air that usually occurs around October or November to
February. This season causes a slight to moderate rainfalls and a prevailing cold wind at the
eastern region of the Philippines. The Amihan is considered as the high peak season in the
Philippines as it brings the best weather conditions; the air is cool, less rain, and the humidity is
low.
- On the other hand, the Habagat brings heavy rainfalls and humid weather. The strong winds and
rains that it brings often results to strong typhoon that may trigger floods, landslides, and causes
damage to properties and structures. The Habagat usually occurs around June to late October.

ORIENTATION OF STRUCTURE

- The site is situated at Mambungan, Antipolo, Rizal where the site faces towards the North.

WINDOWS

- The designers will place windows in every room of the structure. The windows at Northeast and
Southeast part of the house will be utilized as it directly faces the prevailing winds; Amihan and
Habagat. This plan aims to maximize the ventilation and the prevailing winds that will enter
inside the structure. Additionally, the designers will incorporate big windows to enhance the
ventilation and the natural light that will enter the structure.

EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS

- The designers will utilize the cross ventilation and passive cooling methods to further enhance
the natural ventilation and shading inside the proposed tropical house.
- The designers’ probable solutions are:
1. Louvers or pivot windows – To maximize the natural ventilation.
2. Insulation – to minimize the heat gain.
3. Green roof – to minimize the heat gain and add a cooling effect inside the structure. It
will also serve as vegetation.
4. Water elements – to add a cooling effect.
5. Shading (Trees or Overhangs)
