JULY/AUG 2024

Hello Everyone
By the time you read this, hopefully we will be basking in some warm, sunny
weather, and able to enjoy summery things to do. It's not the same going to outdoor
concerts when everything is soaking wet and you're not sure you will get off the
carpark! We only do one outdoor concert now; the jazz picnic at Westacre and that's
at lunchtime.
When we were younger, we used to go 'large' at summer concerts and take the full
works including proper table, tablecloth and napkins, cutlery and glasses, but having
suffered a mile long traipse with all this paraphernalia cutting into our hands on one
occasion, we downsized to picnic table, plastic everything else and less food. Now
it's an even smaller table, quick quiche, sarnie and a choc bar and drinks from the
venue!
Whatever you are doing this summer, I wish you the 'Goldilocks' experience of
everything being 'just right!'

Clinical Pharmacists are highly trained and qualified professionals who

can react to, or with other medication, how they react with your body and your
own medical condition. Part of their role is to conduct structured medication
reviews with you to ensure that the medication you have been prescribed is
having the desired effect without any unwanted side effects, that the dose is still
correct, and they are not impinging on your lifestyle wherever possible.
Medication reviews can be carried out by your GP, but having a review with a

We are fortunate that we have regular access to Clinical Pharmacist clinics with

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Dear Friends.

Summer has arrived! Or at least I hope so.

The school year comes to an end and holidays start. Across our benefice we have
five primary schools; eighty-four children will be leaving at the end of Year Six and
going on to secondary schools. It is a real joy to have so many children in our
schools, all of which offer so much to the children, and a wonderful start in their
learning and education.

Two years ago, as a group of churches, we decided to give all our Year Six leavers a
Bible, as a gift from the church, and as a way of saying that we value each child and
their time at our schools. We hope they will remember the time in their village
primary schools, and their visits to church.

To be fair, the Bible is a complex book, and it’s very large. It offers stories and
insights to God and Jesus. We can learn so much from just reading a little at a time.
There are guides and helps to finding your way into the Bible and how to find verses
to help you at certain times. It's one of those books which is hard to start at the
beginning and read through. I usually suggest that you start with the New Testament,
about Jesus.

Interesting facts about the Bible, did you know…

It is the most stolen book ever! Many copies disappear from various places. It is the
most read book in the world. There are 100 million copies sold or donated every
year. It has 600,000 words and 1189 chapters. It was written over 1566 years from
1450 BC (around the time of Moses) to 160 AD.
For our children, we hope they will enjoy the gift of the Bible. Whether they open the
pages and look at the maps (which is what I would have done) or start to read some
of the chapters, or simply put it away for a later time, they will all have a Bible to
support them in their life's journeys ahead.
I always think the Bible is a book to have and to hold.

Once school is finished, I hope you all enjoy some holiday time, at home or further
afield and we look forward to bringing the magazine to you again in September.
God Bless Rev'd Sue Martin

Gayton Past Times
A few years ago I was asked if I wanted the W I (Woman's Institute) dairies and
photo albums , there being about a dozen. These I put in a box in the spare room,
which I came across the other day.
These were presented at the History club meeting and a lot of interest was shown in
them. Press clippings of the formation of Gayton W I back in 1946 plus the
programme for the year. This makes an interesting read. If anyone would like to
borrow them. do please get in touch, they deserve to be seen.
Other facts: the Women's Institute was formed in 1915.
1924 W I members sing Jerusalem which was specially composed for them.
1946 Gayton W I formed. 2018 Gayton W I disbanded.

Gayton Football Club
July and August are particularly busy months as the club builds to
the start of the season with preseason friendlies on the pitch. The
first and reserve teams have the following games at home
confirmed (subject to change) At the time of writing the A team will
start in September as normal within the district league, where as the
firsts and reserves start 10/08/24.

Firsts - Parsons Drove 09/07, Castle Acre 16/07, Reffley 23/07

Reserves - Outwell Res. 18/07, RAF Marham 2nds 08/08.

With the recent league restructuring the first team are now in the Anglian
Combination Division 3 North and the reserves in Division 4 North. This
restructure means that the first team in particular will have a lot more local games
so your support is even more invaluable!

Off the pitch lots of work is being done around the ground. Our biggest project is
that we have a new spectator fencing being installed thanks to AMR who have
kindly sponsored us with this. It gives the ground a more professional look and
we're grateful for their support.

Our sister club Holly Meadows have also been busy down at LKR helping to
improve the facilities and we're delighted the work and support that Jamie and the
gang continue to do and we're incredibly grateful of our partnership with such a
fantastic youth club which we hope will be a long standing relationship. Please get
down on a Sunday to support the young guns!

Our chairman Mr Dom McCullum has been recovering from a small minor
operation which has been successful. Dom is an integral part of the club and I
know Pat cannot wait for him to be able to get back to his normal self and not drive
her mad at home with his stories of how Newcastle Utd are a bigger club than
Sunderland

As always we're grateful for all our sponsors and supporters, if you would like to
get involved give us a shout. Sam Hewitt

had kindly given us somewhere to store our kit until our accommodation was ready.
We were staying in the Reedcutters village, a collection of 8 cabins, similar to
Shepherds Huts, equipped with bunk beds. After a packed lunch we settled into our
cabins and the girls had great fun trying out all the beds!
Our first activities were Archery and Obstacle Course, which everyone enjoyed
despite the fact that it was still raining!
After a snack, the girls helped to get everything sorted out and then we made Dream
Catchers.
As it was still wet, after supper (Chilli Wrap followed by Banana Split) we watched a
film and then headed off to bed. The beds were really comfy, and everyone slept
well.
On Wednesday, the weather was a bit better – it didn't rain all day! Immy, the
Rainbow leader came to visit. We managed some Grass Sledging after breakfast
and after lunch headed off for Zip Line and Obstacle course for those who'd not done
this the day before. We managed to squeeze in making musical instruments from
natural materials, natural sculptures and natural O's and X's.
Later in the afternoon, we paid a visit to the onsite shop and then did some
challenges, floating tea lights on rafts and following a string trail. We also tried out
Nordic Braiding.
We concluded Wednesday with a lovely Camp Fire and 2 girls made their Guide
Promise.
We had to leave on Thursday, but there was just time for Stand-up Paddle Boarding,
before a packed lunch and time to go home.
It was a full on 'holiday', but we all
had a great time and I'm sure we'll be
going back soon.

Church Car Park
The Churchwarden and PCC are looking at having the surface of the Church Car
Park surfaced to eliminate the Potholes and standing water.
As Churchwarden I am applying for a grant to help pay for the project which we hope
will make the work ready to proceed in September onwards.
Should anyone wish to make a contribution to this work please contact me; my
details are on page 3 of The Voice.
In the long term we are looking at matching the Vestry with Oak doors the same as
Kitchen and Toilet. This is a long-term project as we have to obtain a Faculty from
the Diocese then sort out the funding. We are doing this to try and combat thefts and
making the vestry more secure.
On a better note we have had some lovely weddings in the church this year along
with about 11 baptisms.
We are now taking bookings for 2025 weddings and have 3 already booked. If you
are thinking about getting married in our church, please contact me or Rev Sue
Martin. You are welcome to visit the church and discuss any plans.
Baptisms are on the second Sunday in the month at 12noon. again contact me or
Rev Sue Martin. Details on page 3 of The Voice.
To all who help in fund raising, cleaning, flower arranging. grass cutting and anything
else that goes on behind the scenes a big thank you. It is just disappointing that
some people disrespect Churches, but I suppose they have no idea what village
people do to keep a church running. Stan Watkinson Churchwarden

We do not meet in August but will return again on 17th September when we will be

Met Matters
Early shift 17.8.1973. I was posted van driver at Albany Street ( I had a blue light
and a bell- heady days,) with Roger Woodcock (my friend Paul "Taff" Beeson)
nicknamed him timber d**k) as my passenger. We took a call to CBS records whose
staff reported that a cockatoo was flying about inside the building. We managed to
capture it in the staff toilet, put it in a cardboard box and took it to the nearest
RSPCA site, which I recall was at Neasden. Cockatoo deposited, a cuppa and a chat
and we returned to the nick. Roger wrote a very amusing incident report entitled
"The cockatoo in the loo."
The following morning the two of us were posted to the van again and on parade.
Our colleagues were briefed on a report published the previous evening by the Chief
Inspector, who had received information about the leader of the church of Aphrodite
who styled himself the Reverent Father F***. He and his followers were squatting in
various semi derelict council properties in Somers Town, an area sandwiched
between, and to the rear of Euston and Kings Cross railway stations. Their worship
was fuelled by copious quantities of cannabis. The Rev had previously been arrested
in Notting Hill for eating openly in the street, a cannabis cake in the shape of a male
member, which he had baked. ( Sorry Gina I don't have the recipe) . The crux of the
report was that a sheep had been purchased, was currently being held in the garden
of one of the squats and was due to be sacrificed as an offering to the god Aphrodite
at Virginia Water in a few days time. Obviously this could not be allowed to happen.
A number of us conducted a search of the area when Roger and I were confronted
by a couple in a car waving furiously and shouting "We've got it." There on the rear
seat of their car was a fully grown sheep which was duly transferred to the back of
the van and taken to the RSPCA. "Hello boys what have you got for us today?" I said
"You'll never guess in a month of Sundays.” Another cuppa and a good laff.
At the time I had never heard of Virginia Water but subsequently having married and
bought our first house in Middlesex, I used to regularly walk our dogs round the lake
and my daughter has worked in a pizza restaurant there for twenty years.
Long before I reached the dizzy heights of driving the van, the duties of van and area
car driver were shared between Brian Hooks and Ted Allen who were "Gods" when
you were a probationer.
Both van and car had force radios and took emergency calls transmitted from
Scotland Yard. One late shift the assembled masses were in the reserve room at
Albany Street for an 8pm cuppa. There was always friendly banter between the two
as to whom was the better driver. Brian says to Ted "Why is the top button of your
tunic undone?" Well says Ted "that shows that you are a top notch double A class
one driver, if the 2nd button is undone you are still reasonable, 3rd very average and 4th
no hope." Quick as a flash Taff said
"Do your flies up Ted" It brought the house down. John Dale

Compost Corner
Hazy, lazy days in the garden? It really is worth
remembering to actually sit and enjoy the fruits of your
labour. If like me, you are more prone to seeing what
you haven't done as opposed to what you have done,
this is especially true. From a short distance our garden
looks pretty good, but we will leave it there……….

There's always something to do. I have to get the 'magic wand' out and trim back a
number of flowering shrubs. Physocarpus , Photinia and early flowering Viburnum
are on the list. Once chopped, your shrubs will benefit from a good mulch feed. Also
keep dead heading roses and annuals to keep the blooms coming.

Gardening and farming are not easy occupations during these many changes of
weather. Two of my Acers have greatly suffered with the cold winds, once removed
from their winter protection, which is really annoying as they are quite mature trees.
Of course, we have all been battling slugs and snails this year. I've lost over 50
bedding plants, three dahlias – one a gift from a friend -oops – all to the evil
munchers. To try to combat this, I have put plastic, meshing and sheep's wool in the
bottom of the pots, some used compost, new expensive compost, then buried slug
pellets (I know, but they aren't accessible to birds), some pots have copper tape
round them and finally my weapon of mollusc destruction – garlic spray! So far, I am
pleased with the results, although, fair to say, quite a few of the Hostas are up off the
ground. Let us spray! And spray! And then again after any rain.

This is what I did. 2 bulbs of garlic squashed with the end of a rolling pin or similar, in
a large jug. Add three pints of boiling water and allow to seep for 3-4hrs. strain off the
liquid into a plastic bottle. Then finally in a spray bottle dilute 50% garlic juice to
water. So whilst most of you are basking on a balmy evening sucking in the scent of
honeysuckle, tobacco plants, evening stocks, etc we are awash with the smell of
garlic! Some you win…. Fleur Potts

Light Summer Reading
For many years, my friend Wendy, who lives in Norwich and I, who lived in Watton, met
up every Thursday for our 'walking day.' This was sacrosanct and became of interest to
many family and friends. We used to go all over the place, once even going to Hebdon
Bridge for the day! Of course this wouldn't be possible now because of more traffic and
speed cameras. Sometimes we went further afield with 'night passes' from our spouses.
We met some amazing people, had mega picnics, and took lots of photographs. I kept
'Walking With Wendy' logs, which we have divided between us, but unfortunately this
log is in Norwich, so no pics. I hope you enjoy the read.

June 25th – Thursday 2009

We met up early at Morrisons car park in Fakenham at 8.30am and continued the
journey in my car to Holkham village car park where we booted and gathered ruc-sacs to
set off on a very warm day. It was lovely walking through the estate, so nice in fact that
we forgot to look for a marker board and soon got off course, but ended up quite near to
the Hall. We were so enjoying the walk by the lake and the different ducks and birds on
it, but then we turned back to get on track again, still through beautiful park land and then
out through the gates where we met a couple of workmen who said they would close the
gates for us – nice. Then it was across the road and down a hedge lined track, across a
field and to the beach.
It was at this point that 'beautiful' turned into interesting as we quickly discovered that not
only was the tide in –unheard of at Holkham, but that we were in the Naturists location
and that there was one such person, just THERE! Wendy went off taking photos whilst I
had a surreal 10 minute conversation with a totally naked man. I have to say that I was a
bit concerned as he was obviously quite tanned and I worried about his male member
being a tad sun burnt? Now as far as we can remember this is a first for the walking log
and although we both thought about it – wait for it – we just didn't have the nerve to ask
for a photo, which as you know we so often do!
There was a lovely cooling breeze along the beach, although the walking was quite
difficult on the soft sand. It wasn't too long though before we came across a loved and
familiar landmark where there is access through the trees to a little balcony and a seat
overlooking the sea. Whilst we are having our lunch at 12.15. it became obvious that
this is a great meeting point
We met Paul and Charlotte from Bakewell in Derbyshire who are in Norfolk for a few
days and we had a chat with them. Then we met another couple who were concerned
about their daughter, so we had a chat with them whilst enjoying a lovely lunch.
We carried on walking until we got to the road that leads from the Hall to the beach and is
effectively the car park. Whilst walking up here, a car approached tooting and waving - it
was Paul and Charlotte. We got back to the car at ¼ to one and by now it was really hot
and we were both sweaty and horrible, but we stopped at the Real Ale shop and got
some sustenance, alas not for us! We said our goodbyes at Morrisons and home for a
lovely shower. Gina

Have you heard of ReMap? https://remap.org.uk
Maybe not, as ReMap's light tends to remain under a bushel. Remap is an amazing
charity who design and make bespoke disability aids for people of all ages.
My case is typical of the work which they do; I heat my home with a log burner and
age, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis were making it increasingly difficult and unsafe
for me to lean forward into the hearth to open and close the door. I contacted ReMap
who put me in touch with the local branch. A ReMap volunteer, Andy came to see me
to discuss the issue.

Two weeks later and I'm in possession of a gadget which 100% solves the problem.
It's a fully insulated metal stick on the end of which is a hollow tube which fits exactly
over the door handle and so that I'm able to lift it up to open and pull it down to close.

I was amazed and Andy made sure that I was able to use it properly before he left.
ReMap does not charge for it's work but donations are always much appreciated.

However, what ReMap is really short of is VOLUNTEERS. So, if you're a retired

engineer or skilled and enthusiastic DIYer or just want to know more about how
ReMap might make your life easier, please do contact John Charnock for a chat
on 01553 631872 or norfolkwesttreasurer@ remapgroups.org.uk

Grimston Cricket Club

Summer has finally arrived, and the cricket season is in full swing! It
is incredibly rewarding to see people at the ground all week, at time of
writing our schedule looks like this:
· Monday - All Stars sessions and Ladies Training
· Tuesday - U13 games
· Wednesday – Youth Cricket and Adult Nets
· Thursday- Strength and Conditioning
· Friday - Ladies Match
· Saturday – Senior Match
· Sunday – Senior Match
·
It is a packed schedule, and we always need more volunteers, coaches, and
players to keep the club running smoothly. The positivity around the club is
palpable as we continue to grow and expand, and it is an amazing place to spend
time in beautiful surroundings.
We also hope to soon submit a planning application to extend our pavilion – this
will be backwards towards the rear of the building and won't impact on the thatched
roof or the beautiful front-aspect of the pavilion. We will also be looking to build
another Stand at the club to make the ground look symmetrical and provide
additional changing space for our ladies' players – this is something we are obliged
to provide now we have ladies' teams.
Finally, we would like thank everyone involved in the club for their support, and the
whole community for getting behind us in everything we do. Our vision is to be the
heartbeat of the community during the summer, and with our SEVEN teams and
community programs such as the Big Bash, we feel that we are really making it
happen. Sam Adkin

And Finally
July 4th - Voting day. Please remember to vote - even spoilt papers
have to be counted.
Why don’t Oysters share their pearls?
Because they’re shellfish.
Have a super summer. I know you will miss us!? Back in September.
xx from Vicky and Gina
