Topic assessment
1. Solve these equations for 0    2 .
Give your answers as a multiple of  .
3
(a) cos  = [2]
2
(b) sin  = −0.5 [2]

2. A circle has radius 4 cm. The perimeter of a sector of the circle is equal to the area of the
sector. Find the angle in the sector, giving your answer in degrees to 1 decimal place.
[4]

3. (a) When x is small, show that sin 3x  cos 4 x can be approximated by 3x − 24 x3 . [3]
(b) Hence, approximate the value of sin 0.3  cos 0.4 . [2]
(c) Calculate the percentage error in your approximation to 3 significant figures. [1]

4. The diagram below shows the cross section of a cylinder of radius 2.5 m. A belt is
wrapped around the cylinder and passes through a point 5 metres from the centre of the
cylinder.

Find the length of the belt. [6]

5. (a) Sketch the graph of y = cos x for −  x   , [2]

(b) Sketch the line y = 3x on the same axes, and indicate the point where the
graphs intersect. [1]
(c) Use small angle approximations to find an approximate value for the x-coordinate of
the intersection point. [5]
