SAMPLE CALCULATION FOR ALLOWABLE PILE CAPACITY (IS 2911-PART1:2010)

The ultimate pile capacity for cohesion less soil is estimated by the following formula
𝑄𝑢 =𝐴𝑃 (0.5𝐷𝛾𝑁𝛾 + 𝑃𝐷 𝑁𝑞 )+∑𝑛𝑖=1 𝐾𝑖 𝑃𝐷𝑖 𝑡𝑎𝑛𝛿𝑖 𝐴𝑠𝑖
𝑄𝑢 =𝐴𝑃 (0.5𝐷𝛾𝑁𝛾 + 𝑃𝐷 𝑁𝑞 )+∑𝑛𝑖=1 𝐾𝑖 𝑃𝐷𝑖 𝑡𝑎𝑛𝛿𝑖 𝐴𝑠𝑖
Where:
𝐴𝑃 =0.0706 m2
D =0.30 m
𝛾 =18 kN/m3
𝑁𝛾 , 𝑁𝑞 = 130 and 109.41 respectively
𝑃𝐷 = 26 kN/m2
Ki = coefficient of earth pressure applicable for the ith layer, taken as 1.5 (∅° = 40°)
PDi = 26 kN/m2
𝛿𝑖 = 40°
𝐴𝑠𝑖 = 1.413 m2.

Sample calculation for Lateral Pile Load Capacity

The lateral pile load capacity is calculated as per Broms’s theory by assuming the piles are
Unrestrained or Free Headed.

The lateral pile load capacity is calculated as per Broms’s theory by assuming the piles are
Restrained or Fixed Headed.
𝐻𝑢 = 1.5𝛾𝐿2 𝑑𝐾𝑃
𝐻𝑢 = (1.5 ∗ 18 ∗ 1.52 ∗ 0.30 ∗ 3.69)/10
𝐻𝑢 = 6.7 𝑡𝑜𝑛
𝑀𝑀𝐴𝑋 = ( 2⁄3)𝐻𝑢 𝐿

𝑀𝑀𝐴𝑋 = ( 2⁄3) ∗ 6.7 ∗ 1.5

𝑀𝑀𝐴𝑋 = 6.7 𝑡𝑜𝑛 − 𝑚
