 Meaning of Refugee Health
Refugee: These are group of people that move from their own country to another due to various
causes.
in other words “Refugee Health refers to the health related issues of refugee, their effects,
limitations, prevention & treatment of these health related issues. It is a field of study on the health,
effects experienced by displaced people such as chronic disease and mental health issues.
 Causes of Refugee Health Issues
 It usually emanates from various causes, as outlined below;
 Conflicts, Natural disasters, Severe Political Oppression, Environmental Degradation or
Economic crisis.
 Effects/Problems Of Refugee Health.
 Below are some of the problems amongst the ones that can affect Refugees.
 Language Barriers.
 Cultural differences.
 Accidental injuries, hypothermia.
 Burns, unwanted pregnancy and delivery-related complications & various non-communicable
disease due to the migration experience.
 Mental health issues, Different physical & mental needs, shaped by experiences in their country
of origin migration journey, host country and integration policies and living in dark condition can
be their availability to chronic disease. e.g. Covid 19 pandemic
 In 2021, countries with the highest no. of refugees fleeing where (1) Syrian Arabic republic,
Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Myanmar whilst country hosting the highest no. of
refugees were Turkey, Colombia, Uganda, Pakistan & Germany.
 Limitations/Solutions/Benefits at Refugee Health.
Below are some of the benefits/limitations & solutions.
 Health Coverage: (list of available health coverage options for refugees).
 Medical screening (Screen Refugees) to identify health conditions provide
vaccinations and referrals.
 Refugee Health promotions:- Provide health education & outreach, health care
navigation support and wellness group activities.
 Mental Health and Wellness through initiations programs.
 Services for survivors of Torture :- Assist those who experience torture.
 The above initiatives are carried out by varieties of partners, including states,
local health departments, resettlement Agencies, community based organization
