The first farmers moved into Southern Africa about 2 000 years ago, they moved there from areas
in West Africa like Nigeria and Cameroon. These early African farmers built houses and villages.
They kept small herds of sheep, goats and cattle. Cattle were very valuable to them and a
person’s wealth was based on how much cattle they owned. People may have moved south for
many reasons: for more fertile land, better grazing for their cattle or even conflict with other
groups such as the San. These farmers made weapons and tools from Iron unlike the San who
made tools from stone. Source B

QUESTION 5 – CASE STUDY [5]
Read through the information below and answer the questions that follow:
Hunter-gatherers, herders and farmers lived together in southern Africa ; archaeologists have found
a lot of evidence that tells us about their interactions. Rock art paintings showing cattle, sea shells,
bone arrowheads and ostrich eggshells all tell us about the interactions between the hunter-
gatherers and the farmers. The rock art paintings depicting cattle proves that the Khoisan exchanged
cattle with the farmers. The other artefacts found by the archaeologists also provide proof that the
Khoisan and farmers would trade. According to oral history, the Khoisan would do a trance dance to
bring the farmers rain for their crops, in exchange for cattle. Therefore , evidence discovered by
archaeologists shows that the Khoisan and farmers interacted with each other mainly through trade.

QUESTION 6 – SOURCE INTERPRETATION AND PARAGRAPH WRITING [7]
We know about the farming people and the roles that men and woman played in farming society
from evidence that the archaeologists gathered.
Below are two written stories from European settlers who observed a farming village in southern
Africa.

When I first visited the farming village, I was told that the men took the job of
looking after the cattle and fighting off invaders. The men were also skilled
carvers and they made tools out of iron. They were skilled hunters and used
assegais and knobkerries to hunt game. The men built the houses. The boys
helped their fathers with the cattle and building huts. They learned fighting
skills through stick-fighting games. Source F

When I first settled in southern Africa , I spent a few days observing the African
farmers. Females played an important role in the farming society. The women
were expert weavers and basket makers. They also tended to the crops that
the family had planted. They fetched water and firewood. They gathered food
such as wild fruit and berries, and herbal plants. They also cooked the food
and cared for the children. The women made pottery for cooking and storing
food. The girls helped their mothers with chores around the home.
