EXPERIMENT 2

ESTIMATION OF KMnO4 USING OXALIC ACID SOLUTION

AIM:- 1) To Prepare M/50 Oxalic acid solution

2) To find Molarity and Strength of KMnO4

THEORY:-
In the redox reaction ,KMnO4 is the Oxidising agent in the acidified
medium and Oxalic acid is the Reducing agent

Oxidation:- 5C2O42- 10CO2 + 1Oe

Reduction:- 2MnO4- + 16H+ + 10e- 2Mn2+ + 8H2O

-
2MnO4 + 5C2O42- + 16H+ 2Mn2+ + 10CO2 + 8H2O

Indicator - KMnO4 acts as self indicator

End point – Appearance of pink colour

PROCEDURE:-

• Preparation of M/50 Oxalic acid solution

• Weight Required = Molecular mass of oxalic acid X 250 = 126 X 250 =0.63g
50 X 1000 50 X 1000

• Weigh 0.63g of oxalic acid and transfer to 250ml standard flask .Make solution upto 250ml
mark
• Rinse and fill the burette with KMnO4
• Rinse pipette with oxalic acid solution and pipette out 20ml into clean conical flask
• Add about 2 test tubes of 4N H2SO4 into the conical flask
• Heat the conical flask to 600 - 700C
• Titrate hot solution against KMnO4 solution till permanent pink colour just appears
• Repeat for concordant values

RESULT:-
Molarity of KMnO4 = M
Strength of KMnO 4 = g/l

CALCULATION

S.No. Volume of Initial reading of Final reading of Volume of KMnO4

oxalic Burette Burette Used (ml)
Acid used
1

Concordant reading =

M KMnO4 x V KMnO4 = 2
Moxalic acid x Voxalic acid 5

M KMnO4 = 2 X Moxalic acid x Voxalic acid

5 X V KMnO4
= M

Strength of KMnO4 = M KMnO4 x 158

= g/l
