EXPERIMENT 1
ESTIMATION OF KMnO4 USING MOHR’S SALT SOLUTION

AIM:- 1) To Prepare M/20 Mohr’s salt solution

2) To find Molarity and Strength of KMnO4

THEORY:-

In the redox reaction ,KMnO4 is the Oxidising agent in the acidified medium
and Mohr’s salt is the Reducing agent

-
Oxidation:- 5Fe2+ 5Fe3+ + 5e
- -
Reduction:- MnO4 + 8H+ + 5e Mn2+ + 4H2O
-
MnO4 + 5Fe2+ + 8H+ Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O
Indicator - KMnO4 acts as self indicator
End point – Appearance of pink colour

PROCEDURE:-

• Preparation of M/20 Mohr’s salt solution

• Weight Required = Molecular mass of Mohr’s salt X 100 = 392 X 100 =1.96g
20 x 1000 20 x 1000
• Weigh 1.96g of Mohr’ssalt and transfer to 100ml standard flask .Add 2-3 drops of
Con.H2SO4 to prevent hydrolysis of Mohr’s salt .Make solution upto 100ml
mark

• Rinse and fill the burette with KMnO4

• Rinse pipette with Mohr’s salt solution and pipette out 20ml into clean conical flask
• Add about 2 test tubes of 4N H2SO4 into the conical flask.
• Titrate solution against KMnO4 solution till permanent pink colour just appears
• Repeat for concordant values

RESULT:-
Molarity of KMnO4 = M
Strength of KMnO 4 = g/l
2

CALCULATION

S.No. Volume of Initial reading Final reading of Volume of KMnO4

Mohr’s salt of Burette Used (ml)
used Burette
1

Concordant reading =

M KMnO4 x V KMnO4 = 1
MMohr’ssalt x VMohr’ssalt 5

M KMnO4 = 1 X MMohr’s salt x VMohr’s salt

5 X V KMnO4
= M

Strength of KMnO4 = M KMnO4 x 158

= g/l
