Give reason Solutions

Q1) Two liquids A and B boil at 150oC and 180oC. Which one of them
has higher vapor pressure at 70oC?
Ans:- Higher the V.P, lower is the boiling point. So liquid A has higher
V.P. ( V.P α 1/B.P )
Q2) CaCl2 or NaCl is used to clear snow from the roads. Why?
Ans:- CaCl2 scattered on icy roads help in melting of ice. It depresses the
freezing point of water to such an extent that it cannot freeze to form
ice.
Q3) Outer hard shell of two eggs are removed. One of the eggs is placed
in pure water and other is placed in a saturated solution of NaCl. What
will be observed? Why?
Ans:- The egg placed in water will swell due to osmosis due to
movement of water into the egg. On the other hand the egg placed in
saturated solution of NaCl will shrink due to osmosis due to movement
of water out of the egg because osmosis always occurs from lower
concentration of solution to higher concentration of solution.
Q4) Why is it advised to add ethylene glycol to water in a car radiator
while driving in a hill station?
Ans:- Solution of ethylene glycol and water is used as antifreeze
solution. This solution has freezing point lower than zero. It will lower
the freezing point of water.
Q5) Which of the following has more concentration, a 1M or 1m
aqueous solution?
Ans:- 1 molar solution contain 1 mol of solute in 1000 ml of solution but
1 molal solution contains 1 mol of solute in 1000 g of solvent i.e..
1000ml of water assuming density to be one. So a 1 molar solution
which contains one mole of solute is present in less than 1000 ml of
water because total volume of solution is equal to 1000ml. So 1M is
more concentrated.
Q6) What has greater osmotic pressure BaCl2, NaCl, glucose?
Ans:- BaCl2 because BaCl2 -----> Ba2+ + 2Cl------> 3 particles i=3. Greater
the number of particles, greater is the osmotic pressure. (Osmotic
pressure is colligative property…. i α π). NaCl----> Na+ + Cl- (i=2).
Glucose=i=1.
BaCl2 ---> Ba2+ + 2Cl- i=3
NaCl ----> Na+ + Cl- i=2
Urea = i = 1
Q7) 0.1 M FeCl3 , 0.1 M BaCl2 , 0.1 M NaCl , 0.1 M Urea. Which has
greater B.P?
Ans:- FeCl3 ---> Fe3+ + 3Cl- ( 4 particles) i=4 (i α B.P)
Greater the number of particles, greater is the boiling point.
Q8) 0.5 M Na3PO4 , 0.5 M NaCl , 0.5 M glucose. Which has lowest
freezing point?
Ans:- Na3PO4 ----> 3Na+ + PO43- i=4 (i α 1/F.P)(Glucose=i=1,NaCl=i=2)
4 particles are produced. So it has lowest freezing point. ( Greater the
number of particles produced, lower is the freezing point)
B.Q-Q9) 6% glucose, 6% urea, 6% sucrose, 6% benzamide ( C6H5CONH2).
Which has higher freezing point?
Ans:- No. of moles = mass/molar mass.
Sucrose = 6/342 = 0.01 mol Urea = 6/60 = 0.1 mol
Glucose = 6/180 = 0.03 mol Benzamide = 6/121 = 0.4mol
Sucrose has lower no.of moles of sucrose so it has the highest freezing
point.( F.P α 1/i)
Q10) E0 values corresponding to the following two reduction electrode
processes are
(i) Cu+/Cu = 0.52 V (ii) Cu2+/Cu+ = 0.16V
Formulate the galvanic cell for these combination. What will be
the standard cell potential for it? Calculate rGo for the cell reaction.
Q11) In the determination of molar mass of A+B- using a colligative
property. What may be the value of Van’t Hoff factor if the solute is
50% dissociated.
Q12) The half reactions are
(i) Fe3+ + e- ----> Fe2+ E0 = 0.76 V
(ii) Ag+ + e- -----> Ag E0 = 0.80 V
Calculate Kc for the reaction at 25oC
-------
Ag+ + Fe2+ > Fe3+ + Ag

Q13) Calculate the emf of the cell

Cr/Cr3+ (0.1 M) // Fe2+ (0.01 M)/ Fe
o 3+ o 2+
E Cr / Cr = - 0.75 V E Fe / Fe = - 0.45 V
