Writing
1. He is so slow that by the time he brings me water, I (die) _________________ out of thirst
2. He is so slow that by the time he brings me water, I (die) will have died out of thirst.
When two events happen in the past, we have to mark which one happened first. The
one that happened first changes to third form and gets the helping verb, "had" like when you
received an invitation after the party had been over.
4
e.g
o By the time we received the invitation, the wedding party had been over.
o By the time the dog noticed the thief last night, John’s house had been robbed.
o Sue had driven for half an hour by the time she realized it was the wrong way.
Confusing (!)
There are some verbs once they are used in the “by the time” clause can create some
confusion for the students. They simply cannot identify its real tense, “present simple” or
“past simple”. Here is an example
Put the verb between brackets in the correct tense
By the time they read my note, I (be) _______________________ far away.
The confusion here, in brief, comes from the nature of the verb “to read” which can
either be in the present or in the past. Therefore, there are two ways to do this. You can use
either the “past perfect”’ or “the future perfect” in the main clause because the verb “to read”
is the same in all forms: the simple present (except for the third person singular (he / she / it
reads), simple past or the past participle.
So, this is it,
1. By the time they read my note, I (be) ___will have been______ far away.
2. By the time they read my note, I (be) ____had been_______ __ far away.
The verb “to read” in the first answer is considered to be in the simple present that’s
why we use “will have been”. But for answer (2) we suppose the verb “to read” is in the past
simple, that’s why we use “had been” in the main clause.
The verb “to read”, actually, is not the only verb creating this confusion, there are
others, for instance, “to bet”, “to burst”, “to cast”, “to cut”, “to hit”, “to hurt”, “to let”, “to
put”, “to set”, “to shut”.
In order to avoid the confusion, an extra context is needed or at least an adapting
adverb of time.
By the time they put the fire out last night, my room (turn) ______________ into ashes
This way, the students can recognize the tense and know for sure if they will use “the future
perfect” or “the past perfect” for the verb between brackets. Then, the confusion is discarded
and only one answer is to be correct.
By the time they put the fire out last night, my room (burn) __had burnt___ into ashes
