CLUTCHES
 Clutch can be defined as a mechanical device which, when
engaged, Transmits Power from one shaft to the other Coaxial
shaft.

FUNCTIONS OF CLUTCHES
 It engaging and disengaging the Gear Box with the Engine.
 Transmits the engine power to road wheels smoothly.

 Allow the Gear Change without any damage.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF CLUTCHES

 Should engage gradually to avoid sudden jerks.
 Should be easily Operated.

 Should not slip while engaging and disengaging.

 Should occupy minimum space.

 Should have minimum Inertia.

 Shouldn’t be noisy.

PARTS OF SINGLE PLATE CLUTCH AND THEIR FUNCTIONS:

1 Clutch Plate:
Clutch Plate is the main component of clutches. There is only one clutch plate present in single plate
clutch.
It is a thin disc type metallic plate having both side frictional surfaces. These frictional surfaces are
called frictional lining. These frictional lining should be made of such materials that it provide torque
transmission without slipping. The co-efficient of friction of the materials should be high.
Clutch plate is assembled between the flywheel and pressure plate.
2. Pressure Plate:
The main function of the pressure plate is to maintain proper contact between the surfaces of the
flywheel and clutch plate by means of springs that are attached to it. The pressure plate is generally
made of cast iron.
3 Springs:
Springs are used to move the clutch plate towards the flywheel and establish a proper connection
between the clutch plate and flywheel. It also prevents the slipping of contact surfaces.
4 Flywheel:
Flywheel is connected to the engine output. When the clutch is in engaged position, the flywheel comes
in contact with the clutch plate and torque is transmitted by friction.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF SINGLE PLATE CLUTCH

Advantages:
1 Single plate clutch is smooth in operation i.e. engagement and disengagement of clutch is smooth.
2 Very less slip occurs in its operation. Slip only occurs during the engagement of clutch and after that
no slipping occurs and functioning becomes very smooth.
3 Power loss is very less.
4 Very less heat is generated as only one clutch plate is used.
5 The operation in this type of clutch is very fast.

Disadvantages:
1 The capacity of torque transmission is less.
2 The size of this clutch is big even for less torque transmission.
3 It is dry clutch so it is required to prevent it from moisture.
4 Chance of tear an wear is high in single plate clutches.

ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES & APP. OF MULTI PLATE CLUTCH

Applications:
1. Single plate clutches are used in trucks, buses, and cars etc.
2. Single plate clutches used where large radial space is available.
3. As sufficient surface area is available for the heat dissipation in Single plate clutches, no cooling oil
is required. Therefore, single plate clutches are dry type.

TYPES OF MULTI PLATE CLUTCHES

Multi-Plate wet Clutch When the clutch is operated in an oil bath, it is called a wet clutch. In this
clutch plate, Thin plates of steel fitted to engine shaft (means drive shaft) and phosphor Bronze plates
are fitted to the clutch shaft (means driven shaft). Multi-plate clutch has grooved surfaces for allowing
the oil to flow through them. These grooves decrease heat generated when engage and disengage
operations.

Multi-Plate dry Clutch When the clutch is operated dry it is called dry clutch. This clutch has plates
with friction material the same as in single plate clutch.

ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES & APP. OF MULTI PLATE CLUTCH

Advantages:
1. Multi-plate clutch transmits high torque because of the number of friction surfaces.
2. The overall diameter of Multi-plate clutch is reduced compare to the single plate clutch and transmit
the same torque.
3. It is used in heavy vehicle and racing cars to transmit high torque.
4. It is used in two wheelers where there is a limitation of space.

Disadvantages:
1. Multi-plate clutches are too expensive.
2. Multi-plate clutches are heavy.

Applications:
The multi-plate clutches are used in racing cars, and motorcycles.
The multi-plate clutch is used in heavy commercial vehicles to transmit high torque.
