TASK EXPLANATION

Each group of students consists of 3 to 4 students, who are randomly assigned


different roles in a company. The students will take part in a meeting discussing the
problem stated in the topic. The roles of the students are as followed:

Student A: Chairperson of the meeting.

Student B: Supportive to the idea in the topic.

Student C: Against the idea in the topic.

Student D: Either take one side of the discussion, or be neutral with his/her own
idea.

If a group only has 3 students, they will be assigned roles A, B and C. In this case,
Student A can play both his/her role and Student D’s role.

Each meeting will last from 7 up to 10 minutes.

MARKING CRITERIA

CRITERIUM EXPLANATION %
Task - For chairperson: introducing the topic of the meeting, 35%
Achievement setting the agenda, managing other members,
concluding the meeting on time;
- For members: providing their opinions based on the
roles they were given in the test cards.

Professionalism - For chairperson: giving approximately equal time for 35%


each member to raise their voice, ensuring that the
conversations are followed (no one is distracted);
- For members: providing short and precise opinions,
not interrupting other members, not dominating the
meeting time, having appropriate cues when asking
for permission from the chairperson to speak, staying
focus on the conversations.

Language - Using appropriate words and phrases (being polite) 30%


when giving opinions and arguments;
- Coherence and fluency;
- Grammatical and lexical accuracy.

Every Christmas a company gives its customers gifts ranging from notebooks and
calendars to cases of Scotch whisky. The financial manager says it’s too expensive
and wants to stop. The sales manager disagrees.
Student A: You are the CEO of the company, and chairing the meeting to discuss this
matter.
Student B: You are the Financial manager. Prove your point by providing financial
records regarding the matter, and give your ideas about what can be done to
increase sales instead of giving gifts.
Student C: You are the Sales manager. Prove your point by providing sales records
regarding the matter, and give your ideas about how to improve the results.
Student D: You are the Public Relationship manager. You can agree with any of the
two managers, but you would also want to give your own ideas about how to
improve customer loyalty without compromising the revenue too much.

Your company is importing soybeans from the US to produce soymilk. However, due
to the recent increase in export tax, the price of soybeans has gone up nearly 30%,
and your company is barely making a profit. Some members of the Board of
Directors suggested switching to Chinese suppliers for a better price, while other
refused the ideas.
Student A: You are the CEO of the company, and chairing the meeting to discuss this
matter.
Student B: You are the Financial manager. You want the company to switch to
Chinese suppliers to cut costs and increase the profit. Give your reasoning and
persuade others into your idea.
Student C: You are the Product manager, and you don’t want to use Chinese
produce in the factory. Give your reasoning and persuade others against the idea.
Student D: You are the Public Relationship manager. You can agree with any of the
two managers, or you can persuade others into a third source of supply of your
choice.

Your company is interviewing a new candidate for the position of Marketing
manager, after the last one retired. This candidate has excellent three-year
experience as a marketer for a big company, but he doesn’t have any degree in the
subject.
Student A: You are the CEO of the company, and chairing the meeting to discuss this
candidate.
Student B: You are the HR manager. You don’t approve his candidacy due to the lack
of qualification. You fear that this could cause unrest among the marketing
department.
Student C: You are the Sales manager. You support the candidacy of this candidate.
In your experience, you know that people don’t need qualification to be good at
sales, and so as marketing.
Student D: You are the Public Relationship manager. You can agree with any of the
two managers, or you can propose your own solution to this vacancy problem.

Your company is planning to change its retirement policy so that the retirement age
would be 2 years (62 and 57) higher than the current age of 60 and 55. Some
employees support this idea, while other are strongly against it.
Student A: You are the CEO of the company, and chairing the meeting to discuss this
problem.
Student B: You are the HR manager. You think that employees can contribute well
until their mid-60s, and increase the retirement age would greatly benefit the
company.
Student C: You are the chairperson of the Labor Union. You disagree with the
change in policy because it would affect the physical and mental health of old
employees, as well as some of their retirement benefits.
Student D: You are the Public Relationship manager. You can agree with any of the
two managers, or you can propose your own solution to balance between the
benefits of the company and the employees.

Your company has just upgraded its main computer system to the newest
configuration. Now it is planning to upgrade the work laptops for all employees.
However, the cost of upgrading would exceed the annual budget by 30%.
Student A: You are the CEO of the company, and chairing the meeting to discuss
whether or not to apply the upgrade.
Student B: You are the CIO of the company. You believe that the upgrade would
massively increase work efficiency, and the company should do it as soon as
possible.
Student C: You are the CFO of the company. You disagree with the plan to upgrade
because of the risk of not making a profit, which may upset the company’s biggest
investors.
Student D: You are the Public Relationship manager. You can agree with any of the
two managers, or you can propose your own solution to improve work efficiency
while not compromising this year’s profit.

A customer claimed that she got allergy when using your company’s product, and
demanded a large amount of compensation or she would announce the problem
publicly on social medias.
Student A: You are the CEO of the company, and chairing the meeting to discuss
how to handle the situation.
Student B: You are the HR manager. You agree to pay the customer to settle the
case, worrying that it would damage your company’s public image if it catches on
social medias.
Student C: You are the Financial manager. You refuse to pay the compensation
because you think that it would create a bad example and other customers may
exploit it to blackmail the company in the future.
Student D: You are the Public Relationship manager. You propose a solution which
can both satisfy the customer and keep your company’s public image safe without
paying too much.
