8.5 LAYING OF CP CABLES

CP cables will be pulled from cable drums by raising the drum on an axle placed through its center to
allow free rotation where long cable lengths are to be installed. For the shorter lengths the cable cut to
suitable size will be used.

The CP cable trenches will be excavated to ensure that the cable is installed at a minimum depth of
700mm when backfilled (minimum trench depth of 850mm to allow for soft sand beneath cable). The
cable will be installed on a 150mm bed of soft sand. The cable will then be covered with a 100mm
layer of soft sand and cable tiles then laid over the cable run. A 200mm layer of selected backfill free
of stones and any other materials potentially damaging to the cable, will be laid over the cable tiles
and cable-warning tape will be laid over this layer. Backfilling will proceed in 150mm to 200mm
layers of selected backfill up to the grade level. If the cables are laid using PVC conduits, soft sand
can be avoided.

All CP cables will be routed in the existing (or) planned electrical trenches/cable tray provided in the
plant as far as possible. Where there is no cable route available, the above procedure is to be
followed.

The routes of all buried positive cable will be marked using cable route markers at 25m intervals and
at changes of direction.

Cables will be brought neatly into Junction Boxes etc, cut to a suitable length and terminated using
the specified cable lugs. A stress relief loop will be provided in each cable and sufficient slack will be
included to allow the cable to be disconnected from its terminal.

For paved areas, the concrete to a depth of minimum 150mm is to be cut open and the cables are to be
laid in PVC conduits and embedded in the concrete. Site Engineers permission/clearance shall be
obtained.

As similar to above procedure, the cable laying across road crossing shall be through GI conduit pipes
instead of PVC conduits.

The size as well as number of the conduit shall be as per the actual requirement depending upon the
cable number and size. The same shall be followed for all conduits.

The cut open shall be properly restored with cement grouting to its original condition after
completion of laying of cables and perform continuity test.

After completion of cable laying and grouting the route shall be identified by arrow mark and "CP
CABLES" marking by paint (Black letters on yellow paint) if require.
