How do we organise weekends?

Queenswood is a leading boarding and day school for approximately 470 girls
aged 11-18. The school was founded in Clapham in 1894 according to John
Ruskin’s philosophies of girls’ education, and moved to its present 120-acre site in
Hertfordshire in 1925. There is a wealth of information about the founding of the
school in the BBC Radio documentary ‘John Ruskin’s Eurhythmic Girls’, presented
by Samira Ahmed.

The school places great emphasis on extra-curricular education, with a proud

musical, dramatic and sporting heritage. Hockey and Tennis are very popular sports;
our Tennis team won all three national titles in 2023. Our musicians have performed
across Europe and at major UK venues including the Barbican and the Ritz Hotel.

In recent years, Queenswood has run a series of occasional lectures, talks and
conversations with leading cultural and academic figures. Previous speakers have
included Ruby Wax, Professor Germaine Greer, Professor Lord Robert Winston,
Professor Brian Cox, Tom Kerridge, Matthew Syed and Clare Balding. These
events are held in our beautiful Clarissa Farr Theatre (capacity: 250) and are
extremely well attended by girls, parents and staff. The Theatre is fully equipped
for audio-visual presentations, and portable cooking stations from the school’s
Practical Cookery Suite can easily be installed on stage. Other venues for speaker
events include the Chapel (capacity: c. 350), the Bellman Sixth Form Centre
(capacity: c. 80), the Pauline Edgar Library (capacity: c. 100) and, for our annual
prize-giving ceremony, the Queenswood Hall (capacity: up to 1000). Most of our
speakers offer book signings, which prove very popular with audiences.

Among the school’s alumnae are anthropologist Dame Alison Richard, former Vice-
Chancellor of Cambridge University, actress Helen McCrory OBE, broadcaster
Georgie Thompson (Lady Ainslie) and Olympic athlete Jodie Williams – all of
whom have spoken at the school.

In addition, the school holds regular author talks for pupils in association with
Chorleywood Bookshop. Guests have included Lauren Child, Jacqueline Harvey and
Robin Stevens.
