The successful commercial use of 4T4R highlights the possibility of evolving digital 2T2R networks into
4T4R networks to deliver a Gbps MBB experience to users in an indoor setting. The success of this
feature may also encourage operators to upgrade their legacy indoor digital networks to 4.5G, where
virtual 4T4R is an essential component. As a result, this technology helps to continue to increase the
investment value of indoor network digitalization.

The commercial network is based on LampSite, Huawei's leading end-to-end indoor digital solution. The
virtual 4T4R technology specifies that any two adjacent pRRUs 2T2R models can be combined to
implement the virtual 4T4R function without changing the network planning and hardware
configuration. As a result, the user-perceived peak rate can grow up to 100% and the network average
throughput can increase by more than 40% after virtual 4T4R deployment, significantly improving user
experience and total network capacity.

Traditionally, antennas used for the MIMO function must be present on a single one base station. In
contrast, the LampSite-based virtual 4T4R solution allows antennas to come from different pRRUs and
radio frontends on a LampSite network. At the same time, this solution can use centralized multi-user
scheduling and precoding based on Cloud-BB architecture to perform multi-user spatial multiplexing.
With those features combined, capacity can be multiplied and the user experience can be improved.
Additionally, virtual 4T4R can be implemented on legacy LampSite 2T2R pRRU models, posing no
incompatibility issues with existing base station equipment or user equipment. As a result, network
resources can be maximized to offer users a superb service experience.
4×4 MIMO is a mode for communications between base stations and mobile phones. 4×4 MIMO
requires mobile phones that support four antennas and 4T4R base stations. The requirements for Gbps
experience stimulate the rapid maturity of the 4x4 MIMO industry chain. 4R has become a typical
configuration for mainstream terminals. The medium- and high-end smartphones released in 2018 also
support 4R technology. Operators use 4T4R to deploy base networks. 4T4R uses multi-antenna diversity
and MIMO technologies to double the peak rate and increase the edge user-perceived throughput by
more than 50%. 4T4R is gaining popularity as a recognized network deployment standard for many
global operators, and 4R will soon be mandatory for 5G terminals. Huawei has deployed 4T4R in more
than 100 commercial networks around the world, helping operators provide a superb user experience.
By using 4x4 MIMO, carrier aggregation, and 256QAM technologies, a smartphone can reach a peak rate
of 1.2 Gbps on a commercial network. With years of experience in RF technologies, Huawei will launch
industry-leading full-band, high-power, and multi-frequency integrated 4T4R modules in 2018. The aim
is to provide customized solutions for different operators worldwide. The 4T4R modules are capable of
5G-oriented evolution to maximize operators' return on investment. "Based on the requirements for
better consumer experience and Moore's Law of communications technology development, 4R
terminals will arise the prevailing industry trend. We can expect to see more than 30 smartphones
supporting 4x4 MIMO in 2018 and over 30% of the smartphones using 4x4 MIMO by 2020," said Chen
Chuanfei.

Operators are now focusing on the selection of a network capacity solution that matches the
development of MBB networks and the terminal industry chain. The FDD LTE network spectral efficiency
and capacity improvement solution released by Huawei has been widely recognized by industry analysts.
As Chen Chuanfei said, "Huawei will keep investing in solutions such as FDD LTE network capacity
expansion and endeavor to provide competitive software and hardware solutions. We aim to help
operators maximize site capacity, simplify site deployment, reduce OPEX, and promote a smooth
evolution towards 5G."
