The engine range 2

Introduction
The 3000 Family of four cylinder water cooled diesel engines, has been developed specifically to comply with
worldwide emissions standards and with EPA/CARB off-road Tier 2 and EEC off road mobile machinery
Stage 2 legislation.
The range of engines develop from 43 kW (57.6 bhp) to 60kW (80.5 bhp) at 2600 rev/min and are suitable for
most industrial, light agricultural and fork-lift truck applications.
Included in the range are:
z 3,331 litre indirect injection (IDI) naturally aspirated engines.
z 3,331 litre direct injection turbocharged (DIT) engines.
For further details, refer to chapter 4 of the manual.

Product duty - usage limitations

The rating curves published for these engines apply for intermittent use only unless specifically stated
otherwise. Intermittent is defined as cyclic power and/or speed, with the maximum power utilised for no more
than one hour in any two hour period and the average load not exceeding the mechanical sign-off limit of the
specification. Where an application demands, or is likely to demand usage above this operating envelope, the
Applications Engineer must obtain prior agreement from Caterpillar Chief Engineer. The Customer must also
understand and agree to any identified durability or reliability vulnerabilities.

Maximum intermittent ratings

Engine type Maximum rating - kW (bhp) at rev/min

3044C 43,0 (57.6) @ 2600
3044C 47,0 (63.0) @ 2600
3044CT 53,0 (71.0) @ 2600
3044CT 60,0 (80.5) @ 2600

Note: Look at the power curves and basic technical data in chapter 6 in order to decide which engine and
rating are needed for the application. If the engine is to operate in the ambient conditions shown on the power
curve, the only adjustments which must be made are for the power used by the fan, the alternator and any
additional auxiliary equipment. Additional information for the correct specification of an engine rating is shown
on page 43.

Balanced version (minimum volume requirement needed)

Engine type Maximum rating - kW (bhp) at rev/min

3044CT 51,0 (68.3) @ 2500
3044CT 56,0 (75.0) @ 2500

The maximum speed or maximum fuel settings must not be changed by the operator. If they are, the engine
and/or the transmission may be damaged. If it is necessary to change any of these settings, this should be
done by a Caterpillar Distributor who has the necessary specialist equipment required for this purpose. The
Warranty of an engine will be affected if the seals for the setting screws on the fuel injection pump have been
broken by persons not authorised by Caterpillar

Notes:
z All ratings are to ISO/TR 14396 ± 5%
z High idle tolerance ± 25 rev/min
z Low idle speed tolerance ± 25 rev/min
z The engine ratings listed in these tables, conform to USA (EPA/CARB) Tier 2 and EEC Stage 2 emissions
legislation for agricultural, industrial and material handling applications
z All engines will be built to the rated speeds specified for that rating. The rated speeds of those engines must
not be subsequently adjusted
z These engines will run correctly up to an altitude of 600 m (2,000 ft). If the engines are to run at an altitude
above this, an increase in smoke may be seen; this is normal for a naturally aspirated engine. Contact your
Caterpillar distributor if adjustments are necessary.

3000 Family 4
Load factor (based on “average cycle power”)
The following guideline should be used to determine the suitability of a rating for a particular application, based
on “average cycle power”. For each of the core 3000 Family specifications, the limit for the “average cycle
power” was established during the engine development programme and is based on the maximum rating in
each case. Operation of the engines above their “average cycle power” limits could result in reduced durability
and reliability.
The ratings listed in the tables on page 43 and page 43 are for intermittent use and should not be used where
the “average cycle power” requirement exceeds:
z 33 kW 3044CT engines.
z 25 kW 3044C engines.
If the engines are required to operate above these levels, you must contact Caterpillar Applications
Engineering for guidance.
To calculate rating suitability
To establish the suitability of a rating for a particular application, the following calculations should be
undertaken:
Example:
3044C / Curve T2340
1 To establish the maximum permitted load factor for the engine.
z Average cycle power = 25 kW
z Maximum cycle = 47 kW
z Maximum permitted load factor (%) = 25 ×100 = 53%
47 kW

2 To establish the load factor for the machine.

z Fuel used over a one hour period of normal operation = A litres
z Fuel used over a one hour period at maximum rating (kW at 2600 rev/min) = B litres
z Machine load factor (%) = A litres ×100 = C%
B litres

For the chosen rating to be acceptable in the application, C% should not exceed the maximum permitted load
factor of, in this example, 53%.
If the above calculations are applied, and the machine load factor (%) exceeds the maximum permitted engine
load factor (%), you must contact Caterpillar Applications Engineering who will provide a more detailed
analysis of the expected engine loading for the subject machine.

3000 Family 6
Engine systems

Fuel system
All engines are fitted with a rotary type fuel injection pump that is mounted into the rear of the timing case.
The engine fuel system is fitted with a 'tamper proofing' device. This is a legal requirement to ensure that the
engine will remain emission compliant, if the engine components and systems are operating in accordance
with their original design specification. Tamper proof fixings are only available from authorised distributors.
Combustion system
3044C: Indirect injection; fuel injected into a pre-combustion chamber in the cylinder head.
3044CT: Direct injection; fuel injected into a re-entrant bowl combustion chamber in the piston crown.
Turbocharger
The MHI (model - TDO 4HL-130) turbocharger, is mounted in high or low position on the exhaust manifold.
Atomisers
3044C: Atomisers are fitted with single hole pintle nozzle.
3044CT: Atomisers are fitted with multi-hole nozzle.
Fuel lift pump and filter assembly
The 3000 Family engines combined fuel lift pump and filter assembly is supplied loose for customer fit.
The lift pump and filter assembly should be mounted on the machine. If the lift pump and filter assembly is
engine mounted anti-vibration mounts must be used.

Lubrication system
Lubricating oil passes from the sump, through the strainer and into the pump inlet. From the pump, the oil
passes through a pressure relief valve, into the oil gallery and into the full flow oil filter. Filtered oil then passes
into the oil pressure rail, through drilled oilways to lubricate the rotating components of the engine.
On 3044CT engines, oil is fed from the rail to supply piston cooling jets. The filter and lubricating oil cooler
assemblies for the naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines are mounted on the lhs of the cylinder block.
Oil to lubricate the turbocharger bearings is supplied via a feed pipe connected to the main oil gallery
(rhs rear of engine) for the feed, and the cylinder block (lhs of engine) for the return to the sump.
Cooling system
Engine coolant is circulated by a belt driven coolant pump, fitted to the front of the cylinder block. A fully
modulating thermostat controls coolant temperature and coolant circulation.

6 3000 Family
Crankcase ventilation
All engines are fitted with a closed circuit breather system including, a safety shut off valve.
3044C
z Gas from the crankcase passes from the top cover, through a flexible rubber hose and into the induction
manifold via a safety shut off valve (S.O.V).
z Oil in the gas from the crankcase returns to the sump (entering below the lubricating oil operating level) via
the metal pipe, fitted to and passing through the cylinder block.
3044CT
z Gas from the crankcase passes from the top cover, through a flexible rubber hose into the breather body.
z Separated oil from the breather body return to the sump (entering below the lubricating oil operating level)
via the metal pipe, fitted to and passing through the cylinder block.
z Separated gasses in the top of the breather body pass through the safety shut off valve into the intake pipe
between the air filter and the turbocharger (clean side of the air filter). The hose from the S.O.V. to the clean
side of the air filter is customer supply.

Cold start system

The conditions that follow will decide the minimum temperatures at which the engine will start:
z Starter motor performance
z Battery type
z Lubricating oil grade
z Cold start aid (glow plugs fitted)
z Cold start advance switch (normally closed switch, opening at 42°C, fitted in thermostat housing)
For more information on minimum start temperatures. Refer to Caterpillar Installation Manual or your local
Distributor.
Equipment required for cold temperatures
The chart below gives the minimum temperature at which a selection of engine oil, battery and starter motor
will start the engine. The temperatures shown are for an engine fitted to a manual gearbox and with the clutch
disengaged to give an increase in cranking speed.
Applications that use automatic gearboxes or other 'high-drag' equipment should use the next most powerful
battery combination to get the same start performance, depending on temperature and engine cranking speed.
Note: The unaided start limit is - 20 °C, the aided start limit is - 30 °C

(2) Amperes for 30 seconds to 7.2v at -18 °C (0 °F).

Batteries that meet this specification will give suitable start performance. If the auxiliary loads are large, it may
be necessary to specify a battery with a higher ampere-hour capacity (or reserve capacity) or to use a separate
battery system. Any battery which is chosen because of its higher reserve capacity must not have inferior high
rate discharge characteristics.
Battery to starter lead resistance
The resistance of the lead(s) used between the battery/batteries and the starter motor must not be more than
0.0017 Ohms for 12v systems. More detailed information on types of battery is available in the Caterpillar
Installation Manual.
Glow plugs
The use of glow plugs will not affect the specification of the battery, but may reduce by a small amount, the
voltage available at the starter motor.
The total voltage drop for the “glow plug to battery” leads must not exceed 0.5 volts (this will include all
connectors).

Cooling system
Maximum coolant temperature
With a 100 kN/m² (14.5 lbf/in²) pressure cap fitted to the system, the coolant temperature must not be more
than 110 °C (217 °F) at sea level. This temperature must be reduced at higher altitudes, see the tables in
Caterpillar Installation Manual. The minimum requirement for temperature measurement, is a warning light or
dial gauge which covers the coolant temperature range.

Notes:
z Tests must be conducted to establish the ambient clearance temperature of a cooling system, the system
must be filled with a solution of 50% antifreeze and 50% water and be suitable for operating worldwide in
ambient temperatures of up to 46 °C (115 °F). If an alternative antifreeze is used, the specification must be
to either BS6580 or MOD AL39
z All cooling systems must be filled in accordance with the procedures in the Caterpillar Installation Manual.
Coolant capacities (engines only)
Engine type Litre UK pint US quart
3044C 5,5 8.8 5.8
3044CT 5,0 9.7 5.3

Radiators
The engine must be installed so that there is no air restriction to the flow of air through the radiator. The
discharged hot air from the radiator must not be sent through the radiator again because the ambient air
temperature will then be lifted above the safe temperature for engine operation. Baffles can be fitted to prevent
this. When the radiator is installed, or a change made to the design of the basic cooling system for the purpose
of radiator installation, or if the installation space is restricted, then a cooling test must be made before the
installation can be approved. For more information about cooling tests see the Caterpillar Installation Manual.
The table below shows coolant flow rates through a typical pressurised radiator system at normal operation
temperature and with the thermostat fully open. The coolant flow rates shown, are for a system resistance
(radiator and piping) of 35 kPa (5 lbf/in²) and are taken at maximum engine speed.

3000 Family 6
Fuel system
Fuel specification
To get the correct power and performance from the engine, use good quality fuel. The recommended fuel
specification for these engines is shown below:
Cetane number 45 minimum.
Viscosity 2.5 / 3.5 centistokes at 40 °C (104 °F).
Density 0,835 / 0,845 kg/litre (kg/l @ 15°C).
Sulphur 0.2% of mass, maximum.
Distillation 85% at 350 °C (662 °F).
Cetane number This indicates ignition performance. Fuel with a low cetane number can cause cold start
problems and affect combustion.
Viscosity This is the resistance to flow and if this is outside the limits, engine performance can be affected.
Density Low density will reduce engine power, higher density will increase engine power and exhaust smoke.
Sulphur High sulphur content (not normally found in Europe, North America or Australasia) can cause engine
wear. Where only high sulphur fuels are available, it will be necessary to use a highly alkaline lubricating oil in
the engine or reduce the lubricating oil change interval.
Distillation This is an indication of the mixture of different hydrocarbons in the fuel. A high ratio of light weight
hydrocarbons can affect the combustion characteristics.
Low temperature fuels
Special winter fuels may be available for engine operation at temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F). These fuels
limit the formation of wax in the fuel oil at low temperatures. If wax forms in the fuel oil, this could stop the flow
of fuel oil through the filter.
Aviation kerosene
Jet fuel is not approved for both 3044C and 3044CT engines. A 5% R.M.E. mixture can be used.
Low pressure fuel pipe sizes for general applications
For details, see pages 78 and page 79.
Electrical shut-off solenoid (ESOS)
The solenoid assembly is fitted to the fuel injection pump. When the solenoid is de-energised, a control rod
selects the 'no fuel position' in the injection pump.
For the fuel pump ESOS the electrical details are as follows:

Lubrication system
Instrumentation
As a minimum, Caterpillar require the use of a warning light for the lubricating oil pressure. The pressure switch
should operate between 50 kpa (7.25lbf/in²) to 80 kpa (11.6 lbf/in²).
Lubricating oil temperatures
The normal maximum permissible lubricating oil temperature measured in the main gallery is 125°C. If the
engine does not operate at its maximum speed and load for more than one hour at a time, then the maximum
lubricating oil temperature can be increased to 135°C (275°F).
Lubrication oil pressure at normal engine working temperature 150 kpa (21.75lbf/in²) to 300 kpa (43.51lbf/in²).
Lubricating oil specification
For naturally aspirated engines use only good quality lubricating oil which is not less than the specification
API CC / CD / CF4 / CG4 or ACEA E1 / E2 / E3.
For turbocharged engines use only good quality lubricating oil which is not less than the specification
API CG4 or ACEA E3.

Cautions:
z The type of lubricating oil to be used may be affected by the quality of the fuel which is available. For further
details, see “Fuel specification” on page 77.
z Always ensure that the correct viscosity grade of lubricating oil is used for the ambient temperature range
in which the engine will run as shown in the chart above.

Installation angle and gradients of operation
The installation must be designed so that air will flow freely over the engine lubricating oil sump and filter. The
operation of the engine at gradients above those approved, either on the side, or front to rear, can cause
engine failure.
If the engine is to be installed in the application, at any angle that is not horizontal in any plane, you must first
contact the applications department of Caterpillar.
Caution: The engine must only operate when the oil level registers between the two marks (Maximum /
Minimum) on the dipstick and be checked with the application on a flat surface. Failure to do this can result in
extensive damage to the engine.
Limiting angles of operation - 3044C and 3044CT
Caution: Intermittent is defined as maximum of 2 minutes machine operation @ 35° all round.

Engine mountings
Standard methods
There are four standard methods available:
1 The engine can be installed on solid mountings, independent of the driven machinery but on a common
base.
2 The complete engine and machine, can be installed on solid mountings on a frame. Install the frame on
flexible mountings on a solid base.
3 Install the engine on flexible mountings, independent of the machine and install a drive shaft between the
engine and the machine.
4 Connect the engine and machine together, and install the complete unit on flexible mountings.
Flexible mountings
The purpose of the flexible mountings must be to:
z control the movement of the engine at normal speed and during engine start and stop procedure.
z remove as much vibration as possible from the frame of the machine.
z give the engine support and hold it during sudden increase or decrease in speed, shock loads or operation
on gradients.
z prevent stress to the engine, caused through distortion of the machine and the engine frame.
z control the movement of the engine inside the capacity of any drive shaft.
Note: Further information about engine mountings can be found in the Caterpillar Installation Manual.

Torsional vibration
Note: In pumps and compressors etc, where the moment of inertia of the driven machinery is high, torsional
vibration can cause extra stress at certain speeds. Similar stress can also occur with low inertia equipment
which is driven off the front end of the engine. For the system to be analysed and to ensure the correct
performance of the engine etc, the information needed by Caterpillar Applications Department is the mass /
elastic details of all the equipment driven from the front and rear of the engine. More information about the
mass/elastic system calculations is given in the Caterpillar Installation Manual.

The drive ratio is 1:1 in the opposite direction of rotation to the engine.
There are two types of PTO, the axial (or linear) type being directly coupled to the crankshaft, and the offset
type using a belt and pulley.
In an application using the belt and pulley type PTO, an accessory drive pulley (drive belt) must be pulled in
the direction of angle (θ) as much as possible to cancel the load (F) bearing on the crankshaft pulley by the
fan drive belt for minimising the bending moment applied to the crankshaft, as shown below.

Ratings
Allowances for engine driven auxiliary equipment
If the engine operates in the ambient conditions shown on the power curve, allowance must be made are for
the power used by accessories such as the fan and the alternator. The amount of power used by accessories
driven by the engine must be decided so that the net horsepower available at the flywheel can be determined.
De-rating
If the engine operates in ambient conditions other than the conditions shown on the power curve, then suitable
allowances must be made for any change in inlet air temperature, barometric pressure or humidity.
1 Inlet air temperature
High inlet air temperature can cause loss of power and heat problems with the cooling system, the lubricating
oil and hydraulic oil systems. This may be due either to high ambient temperatures, or because the engine is
being used inside a building or structure of a machine that requires more air flow.
For naturally aspirated engines, the loss of power will be approximately 2-2,5% for every 10°C (18 °F) rise
above the reference temperature specified on the power curve.
2 Barometric pressure
For every 25 mm (1 in Hg) reduction of barometric pressure within the normal range of changes at sea level,
the rated output of a naturally aspirated engine will decrease by approximately 1-1,5%.
3 Altitude
Naturally aspirated engines will run correctly up to an altitude of 600 m (2000 ft). If the engine is to operate at
an altitude above this, an increase in smoke may be seen. This is normal for a naturally aspirated engine.
Turbocharged engines have been developed to operate up to an altitude of 3000 m (9843 ft). If they are to
operate above this, you must first contact the Caterpillar Applications Department.
For reference, the curves 3893 and 3952 show how the power of a typical naturally aspirated engine can
change with altitude and different ambient air temperatures, see page 96 and page 97.
4 Humidity
The amount by which the rating will be reduced because of humidity, will be according to the percentage
humidity and the ambient temperature (not the inlet air temperature).
Curves 3892 and 3953 show the loss of power due to humidity at different ambient temperatures, see page 98
and page 99. High percentage humidity does not normally occur with very high temperatures. A rating
reduction of 6% should be used as the maximum reduction in power.
5 Temperature
For the effects on the fuel oil from changes in temperature and specific gravity, see page 82.
