Assignment #2
Welded Connections

Question 1.
Determine the maximum value of axial force, N* that can be safely applied to the connection as
shown in Figure 1. The tie consists of 1- 125 x 75 x 8 angle (fy = 320 MPa, fu = 440 MPa) and is
connected to the 150 x 10 gusset plate by 6 mm continuous fillet welds (CFW) using E41xx
electrodes.
(Plate fy = 250 MPa and fu = 410 MPa)

QUESTION 2.

Check the strength of the 6 mm fillet welds which connect the flanges to the web of the plate
girder shown in Figure 2. Note that steel weighs 7850 kg/m3 (77 kN/m3). Assume E41XX
electrodes. (Please use load factors of 1.2 for DL and 1.5 for Live load respectively).

QUESTION 3.

A side plate is loaded with a vertical force of 100 kN downwards at an eccentricity to the centre
of the weld group and a horizontal force of 100 kN at 50 mm from the centre of the weld group as
shown in Figure 3. Determine the maximum shear force in the weld and select a suitable leg
length of fillet weld from the weld strengths given in Table 1. The weld is of uniform leg length
and is made using E41XX electrodes. Please note that the loads given have been factored.

QUESTION 4.

A steel portal frame as shown in Figures 4 is loaded as shown. (Please use 1.2 and 1.5 as the load
factors for DL and LL respectively). You are required to design or determine the following:

(a) The size of the continuous fillet weld (CFW using E48XX electrodes) connecting the beam to
the end plate as shown in Section A-A of Figure 4. The weld strengths are given in Table 1.
